aura031 – DETH CRUX – “Mutant Flesh” – CD Artist: DETH CRUX Overview: Los Angeles deathrock night stalkers Deth Title: Mutant Flesh Crux (who feature in their ranks members of US doom legends Style: DEATHROCK Buried at Sea and black/death heathens Lighting Swords of Format: CD Death) return with their long awaited debut album - the Label: AURAL MUSIC haunting and chameleonic "Mutant Flesh", forty minutes of Cat.Nr: Aura031 shapeshifting and deviant horror punk/gothic rock soaked in Upc Code: 8033622536772 neon, blood, sex, and perversion. Deth Crux channel the grandiose majesty and gloom of iconic UK goth bands like th Bauhaus, Fields of the Nephilim, and Sister of Mercy, with the Street Date: December 7 , 2018 spooky and feral irreverence of Christian Death, projecting it website: www.facebook.com/deathcruxofficial all against their own personal audio-visual backdrop of country: USA decaying urban madness and sinister body horror to yield something truly both unseen and marvelously unsettling and Discography: seductive. Recorded and mixed by famed sound designer Mutant Flesh (2018 – CD – Aural Music) Sanford Parker (Leviathan, Wovenhand, Nachtmystium, Voivod etc.), "Mutant Flesh" features contributions also by saxophone legend Bruce Lamont (Yakuza, Corrections House) and is already slated to become a classic dark goth/horror punk opera of our times. TRACKLIST: 1- Phantom Blood 2- Spectral Other 3- Black Abominable Lust 4- Chrome Lips 5- Mutant Flesh 6- Xenophilia 7- Lycanthropic Prostitution 8 – Persephone is Half Human Line-Up: 9- Exploited Apparition Farron – Brian – Adam - Brandon 10- Yellow Sky Jason Biography: Los Angeles deathrock night stalkers Deth Crux spawned from the L.A. extreme metal underground, coalescing around members of doom legends Buried at Sea and local black/death juggernauts Lightning Swords of Death. They debuted in 2015 with their now classic Pears of Anguish demo tape, released that year by underground tape label T(R)APE. The demo tape was met with much acclaim, stirring up quite a buzz and going quickly sold out as the band was already being hailed as a rising promise in US deathrock. In the wake of the tape's success the band spent the ensuing months writing new music and then booked studio time with famed sound engineer and fellow Buried at Sea bandmate Sanford Parker (Leviathan, Wovenhand, Nachtmystium, Voivod etc.) to record what would become their shapeshifting and tumultuous debut album Mutant Flesh, released in late 2018. Though their sound is easily recognizable as descending from the gloom and decadence of iconic UK bands like Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, and Fields of the Nephilim, as well as from legendary US deathrock deviants Christian Death, Deth Crux are all but an easy band to pin down, mostly due to their mutating and chameleon-like approach to post-punk, where beauty and ugliness, seduction and perversion, dream and nightmare interchange constantly and construct the foundation of their sound within a framework of profound dualism and ambiguity. What sets the band most apart from their gothic rock contemporaries however is their highly personal and unique aesthetic inspired and influenced by the many and darkest faces of their city of origin, Los Angeles, which the band have meticulously distilled to re-paint their home city upside down and inside out, exaggerating its dystopian traits and turning it into a primal force of inspiration for the music and lyrics. The result is a staggering audio-visual experience where the aforementioned musical influences are set against a backdrop of urban chaos and decadence, glamour, sex, perversion, seduction, death, and body horror, and then stirred into a blood-soaked and hallucinating rock and roll horror story about deviated and once-human beings aimlessly and erratically populating and roaming a damned neon hellscape. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by De Montfort University Open Research Archive From Crass to Thrash, to Squeakers: The Suspicious Turn to Metal in UK Punk and Hardcore Post ‘85. Otto Sompank I always loved the simplicity and visceral feel of all forms of punk. From the Pistols take on the New York Dolls rock, or the UK Subs aggressive punk take on rhythm and blues. The stark reality Crass and the anarchist-punk scene was informed with aspects of obscure seventies rock too, for example Pete Wright’s prog bass lines in places. Granted. Perhaps the most famous and intense link to rock and punk was Motorhead. While their early output and LP’s definitely had a clear nod to punk (Lemmy playing for the Damned), they appealed to most punks back then with their sheer aggression and intensity. It’s clear Motorhead and Black Sabbath influenced a lot of street-punk and the ferocious tones of Discharge and their Scandinavian counterparts such as Riistetyt, Kaaos and Anti Cimex. The early links were there but the influence of late 1970s early 80s NWOBM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) and street punk, Discharge etc. in turn influenced Metallica, Anthrax and Exodus in the early eighties. Most of them can occasionally be seen sporting Discharge, Broken Bones and GBH shirts on their early record-sleeve pictures. Not only that, Newcastle band Venom were equally influential in the mix of new genre forms germinating in the early 1980s. One of the early examples of the incorporation of rock and metal into the UK punk scene came from Discharge.

  • The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Not All Killed by John Wayne: The Long History of Indigenous Rock, Metal, and Punk 1940s to the Present A thesis submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts in American Indian Studies by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 © Copyright by Kristen Le Amber Martinez 2019 ABSTRACT OF THESIS Not All Killed by John Wayne: Indigenous Rock ‘n’ Roll, Metal, and Punk History 1940s to the Present by Kristen Le Amber Martinez Master of Arts in American Indian Studies University of California Los Angeles, 2019 Professor Maylei Blackwell, Chair In looking at the contribution of Indigenous punk and hard rock bands, there has been a long history of punk that started in Northern Arizona, as well as a current diverse scene in the Southwest ranging from punk, ska, metal, doom, sludge, blues, and black metal. Diné, Apache, Hopi, Pueblo, Gila, Yaqui, and O’odham bands are currently creating vast punk and metal music scenes. In this thesis, I argue that Native punk is not just a cultural movement, but a form of survivance. Bands utilize punk and their stories as a conduit to counteract issues of victimhood as well as challenge imposed mechanisms of settler colonialism, racism, misogyny, homophobia, notions of being fixed in the past, as well as bringing awareness to genocide and missing and murdered Indigenous women. Through D.I.Y. and space making, bands are writing music which ii resonates with them, and are utilizing their own venues, promotions, zines, unique fashion, and lyrics to tell their stories.

  • Capítulo 2. Marco Teórico

  • 1 Ervin Jarek 2017 PHD.Pdf
ii © Copyright by Jarek Paul Ervin All Rights Reserved May 2017 iii ABSTRACT My dissertation takes a speculative cue from the reception of 1970s New York punk, which is typically treated as both rule – the symbolic site of origin – and exception – a protean moment before the crystallization of punk proper. For this reason, artists such as Velvet Underground, Patti Smith, the Ramones, and Blondie are today afforded the simultaneous status of originators, interlopers, innovators, and successors. This has led both to the genre’s canonicity in the music world and its general neglect within scholarship. I argue that punk ought to be understood less as a set of stylistic precepts (ones that could be originated and then developed), than as a set of philosophical claims about the character of rock music in the 1970s. Punk artists such as Patti Smith, Jayne County, and the Ramones developed an aesthetic theory through sound. This was an act of accounting, which foregrounded the role of historical memory and recast a mode of reflexive imagination as musical practice. At times mournful, at times optimistic about the possibility of reconciliation, punk was a restorative aesthetics, an attempt to forge a new path on memories of rock’s past. My first chapter looks at the relationship between early punk and rock music, its ostensible music parent. Through close readings of writing by important punk critics including Greil Marcus, Lester Bangs, and Ellen Willis – as well as analyses of songs by the Velvet Underground and Suicide – I argue that a historical materialist approach offers a new in-road to old debates about punk’s progressive/regressive musical character.
