As part of expanding the reach and diversity of KLAF, a short architectural film festival was introduced into the programme, curated by Ian Davies.

The themes and movie films were selected to invite and encourage each guest to look back into past inspirations, present concerns and explore future opportunities. Each screening was followed by a discussion, to encourage the audience to share what they got from the movie, and how they might use those ideas to shape their own work as architects.

In conclusion, the feedback that we had from the audience, was that in future, we should consider spacing out the movies over a month.

We were also asked if PAM would run a monthly Movie Night on a Friday.

Saturday 22 June 19 THE FOUNTAINHEAD (1949 Zack Snyder) THEME Hubris and Nemis, where architect Howard Roark (modelled on Frank Loyd Wright), an idealistic young architect chooses to struggle in obscurity rather than compromise his artistic and personal vision.

HERITAGE FOR TOMORROW OPENING CEREMONY @ REXKL

Buildings portray the distinctive characteristics of a society and nation. Our buildings embody the unique architectural, aesthetic, political and social features of the era. Today many of our older buildings are demolished and replaced with new development. As a consequence, much of the physical representation of our history is erased.

The idea of the Heritage of Tomorrow Exhibition is to raise awareness of the many buildings in our country that are located in smaller towns and faraway places with heritage potential. These lesser-known buildings may one day be threatened unless society appreciates and takes steps to protect them. The exhibition featured the measured drawing works of seven architectural schools. The schools involved were International Islamic University Malaysia, Selangor; Universiti Malaysia ; Taylor’s University, Selangor; Politeknik Muadzam Shah, ; Selangor; Politeknik Sultan Idris Shah, Selangor; Politeknik Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah, ; and Politeknik Ungku Omar, .

The exhibition was on display at the RexKL until 7th July 2019 was jointly launched with the Esok/Lusa exhibition on Monday, 24th June 2019. The launch was followed by a talk given by Ar Dato’ Hajeedar Abdul Majid, President of ICOMOS Malaysia which focused on the importance of preserving the past to remind, appreciate, absorb and be aware of our diverse and rich cultural historical origins.

Some of the measured drawings displayed included Sekolah Kebangsaan Bandar Tinggi, Bahru, Johor; Masjid Lama Jitra, Kedah and Istana Sepachendera, Alor Setar, Kedah. These works give us a small glimpse of the rich body of buildings existing throughout our country. Our heritage is precious and must be safeguarded as it cannot be replaced once it is lost. So let us not wait until tomorrow what we can do today to preserve our heritage.

The Kuala Lumpur Architecture Festival 2019 (KLAF2019), organised by Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM), announced the winners of the First Colony on Mars: International Ideas Competition at the KLCC Convention Centre.

The objective of this competition, which ran from December 2018 to the end April this year, was to seek the best design and architectural solution for the first human colony on Mars that can grow and thrive to be innovative and self-sustaining.

“The Competition aimed for architects and designers to think outside the box or in this case outside planet earth. This is timely in light of climate change and the need to start on a clean slate, particularly by critically adopting sustainable living. In space we need to close the loop and learn to be self-sufficient with full re-use of all resources and zero waste,” said Director of KLAF2019, Ar. Dr. Tan Loke Mun.

Garnering a total of 126 submissions, the Competition attracted participants from 32 countries around the globe including Malaysia, the United States of America, United Kingdom, Australia, Italy, Russia, Canada, Austria, Japan, China, and Korea, among others.

First Colony on Mars Convenor Ar. Dexter Y.P. Koh said, “Participants ingeniously combined aesthetics, scientific understanding, and pragmatism with creativity in creating 126 versions of a colony on Mars. This exercise provides the impetus for the future direction of mankind yet ponders the state of our own planet today - perfectly suited for humans yet devastated by its own dominant inhabitants.”

These speculative works aim to spur discussion on issues that plague human civilization and how these issue will transform our future built environment.

The majority of the projects delivered beautiful renderings of futuristic high-rise buildings with very distinctive programs catered for tomorrow's society. Future of high-rise buildings will undoubtedly change its course in the next 32 years. Buildings will become more resilient to natural disasters and equipped with the state-of- the-art sustainable features. Single function buildings will transform into mixed-use and a new typology of high-rise will set in. Other projects included privatization of public space, consumerism, disproportional development and life on the other frontiers such as the moon. Setting up Esok Lusa Exhibition. KLAF2019: OPEN KURAU OPEN KURAU AT BANGSAR NEIGHBORHOOD 22ND JUNE 2019

A local resident reached out to Jane’s Walk KL to pitch the idea of curating a walking tour inspired by the global Open House event. The objective of the walk was to highlight local architectural and design talents in a Bangsar neighbourhood and to explore the possibilities of design for the conventional suburban terrace house. In the end, seven different home-owners consented to opening up their space to a small group of individuals for a morning and evening walk. Each walk took two hours in total, stopping at each home for roughly 15 minutes. Participants were encouraged to ask questions and engage with elements of design highlighted by home-owners. The background of the participants varied and they did not necessarily have a professional background in architecture or design but simply had an interest in this area. The youngest participant for the day was five years old.

While walking around the neighbourhood from one house to the next, participants were kindly requested to limit photography to protect the privacy of local residents. Unique staircase at one of the houses visited during Open Comments regarding the area touched on cleanliness and how Kurau well-kept the neighbourhood was as well as how walkable the back-lanes and side-lanes were. The area did not have connecting pavements and participants walked as a group sharing the space with oncoming traffic. However, the speed of drivers were controlled through multiple speed bumps which eased the walking process. Local residents were seen walking and cycling around the area especially during the evening walk.

About Jane’s Walk

Jane’s Walk is a movement of free, citizen-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs. The walks encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours.
