If you care about an issue, how can you be more effective in arguing for your viewpoint and campaigning in support of it? The Controversy Manual offers practical advice for campaigners as well as plenty of information for people who want to better understand what's happening and to be able to discuss the issues with friends. The Controversy Manual provides information for understanding controversies, arguing against opponents, getting your message out, and defending against attack. Whether experts are on your side or mostly on the side of opponents, you'll find advice for being more effective. While not taking sides on individual controversies, the emphasis is on fostering fair and open debate and opposing those who use power and manipulation to get their way. The author Brian Martin is professor of social sciences at the University of Wollongong, Australia. He has been involved in and studied scientific and technological controversies since the 1970s, and is the author of numerous publications addressing controversy dynamics. None of them indicated a credit to a photographer or artist. When an image was on the site of a commercial or professional organisation, I wrote asking permission to use the image, but received no replies. In scientific controversies, many campaigners seem to feel free to use whatever resources are available, with little concern for giving credit to creators. The result is that images circulate widely and it becomes difficult to trace the original source. On some controversies, I found it a challenge to find suitable images for both sides. For example, there are vast numbers of graphics available on the hazards of GMOs, and relatively few on the benefits. Even when using search terms like “benefits of GMOs” or “safety of GMOs,” a majority of the images that come up are opposed to GMOs. This might reflect the relative ease of symbolising danger compared to safety or economic gains, or perhaps the enthusiasm of citizen campaigners for using pictures to get their message across. Justin is still on the Heart of Texas label and his 4 songs (of a very generous 21). I can’t say I have heard Kenny Seratt before but that is mainly through lack of material available more so than anything else but lo & behold if he doesn’t sound like Lefty, which is particularly weird on “Hank & Lefty Raised My Country Soul”!! He appears on 5 songs and none are less than sensational. What a voice!! Jerry Inman is also fine on three tracks. He was once voted the CMA’s Best Newcomer of the Year. Well he is close to the best on this. The remaining songs feature Curtis Potter, Darrell McCall and Ray Sanders in various trios, duos and solo spots. These are different to the “Texas Dance Hall Music” cd. Curtis Potter, who recorded a duet album on step One with Willie Nelson, is a superb Ray price style vocalist (as if I had to actually tell Y & T regulars) and is grand on “January, April & Me”.

THURSDAY, MARCH 8, 2012 GILFORD, N.H. - FREE COURTESY PHOTO Being prepared In a program conceived and co-sponsored by Gilford Fire Department’s Lt. Frank Latosek, LR CERT members and Gilford firefighters met on Feb. 11 with 23 residents of Village Knolls II, an independent living facility in Gilford. The purpose of the visit was to assist the residents in the completion of a medical information form and emergency preparedness checklist to aid first responders should any of the Village Knolls II residents require emergency medical treatment or evacuation. Latosek kicked off the session with a statement of objectives and a brief overview of the emergency medical information we would be helping the residents collect. Next, Roger Turgeon, LR CERT Outreach Leader, provided information on the “Stay, Leave, Connect” emergency preparedness program. Following the introductions, each resident was provided with a tote bag contain- ing the emergency medical form, new 911 stickers, emergency preparedness documents, other senior oriented services contact information, a flashlight (provided by a grant from Home Depot), and other items. Each resident was then paired with either an LR CERT member or a Gilford firefighter to complete the emergency medical form. By all accounts, this was a successful program enjoyed by the residents and volunteers alike. An after action is being scheduled to review how this pilot program worked in the hopes of extending it to other senior communities throughout the Lakes Region. Gilford firefighters participating included Marty Barrett, Frank & Lynn Latosek, Ricky Raper, and Ron Skinner. LR CERT participants included Mary Lou Anderson, Dick Christopher, Richard Dow, Nancy Fuchs, Connie Leggett, Kathleen Merriam, Jennifer Muzzey, Norma Jo Sorgman, Roger Turgeon, Lisa and Sheila Vermacy, and Jim White.
