The curriculum is designed for integration within a comprehensiveprogram of school health education (lessons on communicable disease,including HIV, can be integrated at the preschool throughgrade 3 levelr with units on germs, diseases, body systems, healthy life style, goodcitizenship, and personal responsibility) and offersopportunities for students to practice sequential, age-appropriatedecisionmaking skills. In addition to classroom lessons and theconcomitant teacher resources and worksheets, the guide offers informationfor all school personnel as well as for classroom teachers; providesa historical perspective and other facts on HIV/AIDS; presentsthe rationale for HIV prevention education; discusses classroomstrategies; and provides guidelines for ensuring appropriatenessand efficacy for diverse student populations. Since that time, the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS and other HIV-related conditions has precipitated an epidemic unprecedented in modem history. At the present time, no vaccines or cures have been developed forHIV/AIDS. HIV is transmitted almost exclusively by behaviors that individuals can modify. (See Figural.)Therefore, educational programs that influence relevant behav- iors are critical to prevent the spread ofHIV.Education for Self-Responsibility Prevention of HIWAIDS and Other Communicable Diseases (ESR III)is designed to encourage Texas students to make
