NEW ORLEANS NOSTALGIA Remembering New Orleans History, Culture and Traditions By Ned Hémard Henry Hobson Richardson Ever had the unfortunate experience of ordering an “Old-Fashioned” and discovering that the bartender added soda to it? Still, soda water is a necessary additive to many cocktails, where its purpose is to extend the drink and provide that sparkling “fizz”. This process of diluting “short” drinks (such as spirits) makes them “long”, and the presence of carbon dioxide in a cocktail may actually speed up the absorbtion of alcohol into the blood. In southern and tropical colonial areas, the addition of carbonated water to dilute spirits was quite prevalent in hot climates and viewed as a rather “British” habit. This was especially true with gin and the addition of tonic (or Indian tonic water), which is carbonated water with quinine added. And soda water is, after all, the essential ingredient of a multitude of soft drinks, which is what they’re called in New Orleans (as well as “cold drinks”). In the rest of the country, they mostly say “sodas”. All of this would not have been possible without the fertile scientific mind of Joseph Priestley (1733 – 1804) who invented soda water in 1767 by discovering a means of infusing water with carbon dioxide at a brewery in Leeds, England. The “fixed air” (carbon dioxide gas) blanketing the fermenting beer was known to kill mice, but Priestley found that (by impregnating the water with this “fixed air”) he had created a pleasant tasting and refreshing beverage. He produced the “fixed air” by dripping sulfuric acid onto chalk, which he encouraged to dissolve into an agitated bowl of water. -

Connecticut Preservation News November/December 2015 Volume XXXVIII, No. 6 Closing the Gap: Financing Hartford’s Downtown By Brad Schide, Housing Renaissance Connecticut Circuit Rider Downtown Hartford is undergoing a housing revival, and historic buildings have taken center stage, complementing other economic development projects such as the University of Connecticut campus, minor-league baseball stadium, and the Front Street redevelopment. With their strategic location, these historic build- ings have long been potential amenities, but private financing alone was not able to cover the full cost of renovating them. Only with new and expanded public funding can developers close the financing gap. In Hartford, money from three sources has helped make up the difference between financing and finished projects: Federal and State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits, the State Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), and the Capital Region Development Authority (CRDA). This article will show how these gap funds made possible the reuse of four historic downtown buildings. All four projects used Federal and State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits. ~ CT·TRUST Connecticut FOR HISTORIC PRESERVATION Preservation News September / October 2004 Volume XXVII, No. 5 The Most Important Threatened Historic Places in Connecticut – 2004 sing nominations submitted by members, leads from an infor- Umal poll of preservationists across the state, and the observations of our Connecticut Circuit Riders, the Connecticut Trust has compiled a list of the most impor- tant threatened historic places in the state. Our aim is to call attention to especially important historic sites that are under threat or to common dangers that imperil a num- ber of historic places in Connecticut. As we looked around the state this year, three recurring themes emerged. One is the need for sources of funding to close the “appraisal gap” — the difference between the cost of renovating a building and its expected value once renovation is complete. Even when there is recognition of signifi- cance, local support, and a willing developer, commercial lenders will not lend more than their appraisals indicate a property is worth. Convinced of the long-term viability of many preservation projects that cannot obtain short-term financing, the Trust is investigating ways of closing this gap. A second theme is demolition by neglect.
