Take on Appomattox Abstract On April 9, 1865, Palm Sunday, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant met in the front parlor of Wilmer McLean’s house in the little village of Appomattox Court House to discuss the status of their two armies. After swapping stories of the days of their Mexican War service, the two men finally penned their names on terms of surrender, effectively ending the American Civil War. Grant, magnanimous towards the now defeated Confederates, and Lee, humble in his loss, ushered in the era of reconciliation that would bandage up the past four bloody years and push the reunited country forward together as one. -

The Surrender Scene at the McLean House Written by David L. Mowery, Cincinnati Civil War Round Table Copyright ©2015 David L. Mowery It’s the late morning of April 9, 1865. We have just witnessed the last battle of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, which had been the largest and most important Confederate army operating east of the Appalachian Mountains for most of the Civil War. Now, here at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, Lee’s army was about half of its original size from only a week earlier when it had defended its trenches at Petersburg. Because of thousands of battle casualties, thousands of desertions, and losses of hundreds of supply wagons over the course of that fateful week, the Army of Northern Virginia had lost much of its size and strength, but not its will, to fight on. The rebel soldiers believed that, just like many times before, General Lee would find a way out of this scrape. Private A.C. Jones of the 3rd Arkansas represented most of the remaining troops of the Army of Northern Virginia when he wrote in his diary, “Up to this time there was not a man in the command who had the slightest doubt that General Lee would be able to bring his army safely out of its desperate straits.” However, after the unsuccessful battle on the morning of April 9, and with the capture by Union cavalry of four train loads of food, clothing, and ammunition the previous night, it became obvious to Lee and his subordinate officers that their situation was hopeless. -

Some ethnologists believe the Shawnee descended from the Fort Ancient people. The Shawnees were wanderers, who lived in many places in the south. They became associated closely with the Delaware in Ohio and Pennsylvania. Able fighters, the Shawnees stubbornly resisted white pressures until the Treaty of Greene Ville in 1795. At the time of the arrival of the European explorers on the shores of the North American continent, the American Indians were living in a network of highly developed cultures. Each group lived in similar housing, wore similar clothing, ate similar food, and enjoyed similar tribal life. In the geographical northeastern part of North America, the principal American Indian tribes were: Abittibi, Abenaki, Algonquin, Beothuk, Cayuga, Chippewa, Delaware, Eastern Cree, Erie, Forest Potawatomi, Huron, Iroquois, Illinois, Kickapoo, Mohicans, Maliseet, Massachusetts, Menominee, Miami, Micmac, Mississauga, Mohawk, Montagnais, Munsee, Muskekowug, Nanticoke, Narragansett, Naskapi, Neutral, Nipissing, Ojibwa, Oneida, Onondaga, Ottawa, Passamaquoddy, Penobscot, Peoria, Pequot, Piankashaw, Prairie Potawatomi, Sauk-Fox, Seneca, Susquehanna, Swamp-Cree, Tuscarora, Winnebago, and Wyandot. -

Episode 235: Surrender at Appomattox Week of April 5-April 11, 1865 By April 5, 1865, Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, having abandoned its defensive lines around Richmond and Petersburg, had moved westward to Amelia Court House, where they hoped to obtain badly needed supplies before continuing the march southward to hopefully join forces with Joseph Johnston’s army in North Carolina. Unfortunately for the Confederates the supply train was not there, and the rebel forces spent a precious day searching for supplies in the countryside. By the time they were ready to continue their march, Union cavalry under Philip Sheridan had reached the rail junction at Jetersville, preventing a more direct movement to the south and pushing Lee instead westward towards Farmville, where he hoped another supply train would be waiting. Meanwhile the Union Army of the Potomac and Army of the James, well-supplied and marching along shorter routes, continued to threaten his rear and flanks, while attempting to get ahead of the Confederates and cut off their retreat. On April 6, elements of Sheridan’s cavalry and the Union Sixth Corps struck Lee’s force, which had become divided into several columns. During the fighting at Sailor’s Creek, Lee lost about 8,000 men, including eight generals who were captured. Viewing the carnage, Lee plaintively cried: “My God! Has the army been dissolved?” His remaining veterans pressed on towards Farmville in two columns, with one crossing over High Bridge to the east of the town. They set fire to the massive span to delay the Federals, but the bluecoats used a separate smaller bridge to continue the pursuit. -

CORNPLANTER By Henry King Siebeneck Cornplanter was a war chief of the Seneca Indians. At the start let me say that the word "Seneca" is not a Latin word and has no connection with the Roman author of that name: itis a corruption of the Dutch word "Sinnekar", meaning vermillion, and refers to the war-paint with which that tribe so often ornamented themselves. The Senecas were members of the Iroquois Confed- eration to which the Mohawks, Onondagas, Oneidas, Cayu- gas and Tuscaroras belonged. Collectively they were known in Colonial days as The Six Nations. Their tradition—car- ries the beginning of their confederacy back to 1471 that date is fixed by a total eclipse of the sun "while the oak trees were inbud"—which took place in that year. Whether their tradition is reliaible or not Champlain found them banded together in 1609 when he joined the Algonquins in their war against the Iroquois and demonstrated to these forest dwellers the usefulness of fire-arms. The Iroquois soon afterward entered into an alliance with the Dutch pioneers who came up the Hudson River and remained true to the Dutch and their English successors in New York for a century and a half. The Iroquois' home settlements were in the central part of New York State, near the head of the Mohawk, Sus- quehanna and Genesee Rivers. These waterways gave them the means of easy approach to many distant points —they could paddle their war canoes down stream to the white frontier settlements, English and French. Each of the Six Nations was made up of Clans whose totems were the Bear, the Hawk, the Turtle, the Wolf, and so on, and all mem- bers of a clan were related to each other by blood. -

Nicholas Lehigh University sher Bliss, a New England trained minister under the auspices of the benevolent organization, theAmerican Board ofCommissioners for Foreign Missions, traveled in January of 1834 to one of the many villages within the borders of the Seneca New York reservation of Cattaraugus. Since November of 1832, Bliss had operated the Lower Mission Station at Cattaraugus which had a church and a school. In 1834 Bliss was searching for potential converts from a village whose residents had yet to join his church. Instead of a receptive audience the minister encountered a man, "one [who] justifies himself for neglecting the great salvation because the chiefs do not approve of their going tomeetings." In the same village where Bliss made his rounds, he was verbally assaulted by another Seneca: "the Indians do not need the Christian religion. It was white men who crucified the Lord."1 By 1834 such hostile encounters were routine for many Senecas and board-certified ministers like Bliss.
