    STRATEGIC INTERTEXTUALITY IN THREE OF JOHN LENNON’S LATE BEATLES SONGS* MARK SPICER his article will focus on an aspect of the Beatles’ compositional practice that I believe T merits further attention, one that helps to define their late style (that is, from the ground- breaking album Revolver [1966] onwards) and which has had a profound influence on all subsequent composers of popular music: namely, their method of drawing on the resources of pre-existing music (or lyrics, or both) when writing and recording new songs. This may at first seem entirely obvious, especially since nowadays such a practice has been adopted routinely by many songwriters and producers, and is in fact the prevailing compositional strategy within certain pop and rock genres, rap being probably the most blatant example. Many rap artists are well known for their so-called “rap versions,” as Tim Hughes has described them, in which a distinctive element of a pre-existing song is lifted out of its original context—typically via digital sampling—and used as the foundation upon which a new song is built.1 Will Smith’s hit “Wild Wild West” (1999), for example, is composed around a sample of the bass-driven main groove from Stevie Wonder’s funk classic “I Wish” (1976); and Eminem’s hit “Like Toy Soldiers” * This essay is based in part on the first chapter of my dissertation, “British Pop-Rock Music in the Post-Beatles Era” (Ph.D. dissertation, Yale University, 2001). Rumors had been circulating on the Internet yesterday afternoon about Smith’s apparent suicide; by early evening, the overwhelm- ing traffic from well-wishers and fans was crashing Sweet Adeline’s discussion board. A handful of posts indicated that representatives from Smith’s label, Dreamworks, were attempting to contact Charlie Ramirez, the webmaster for Sweet Adeline. Within hours, Ramirez posted the following: “As you probably realize, I’m pretty devastated about having to say goodbye to Elliott. it’s never easy to put into words what someone means to you. Elliott was such a lovely man. I will always have his love, kindness, intelligence, humbleness, creativeness, greatness and so much more in me forever because that’s what he was and i’ll always love him for being who he was. I’ll miss you so much. We will all miss you. It was only a few months prior on July 1 st 2010, when Smith lost his only brother to suicide who struggled for years with depression. ThewaytheworldDies searches for resolution in this sobering chronological analysis of his brother’s last years and the aftermath of his death. In February 2011, after a handful of rehearsals, the band convened at Gastonia, NC’s Old House Studio and recorded the album with chief engineer, Chris Garges . “It was cathartic to return to Gastonia. I handed it over and he plugged it into the sleek Apple laptop he carried with him everywhere. He soon transferred Elliott’s entire discography to my device. Much like Elliott, he was a musical prodigy, possessing an ability to pick up most any instrument and best other musicians who’d been playing Elliott Smith for years. My musical naiveté would have appalled him if he didn’t enjoy educating me so Roman Candle much. 07/1994 “We’ll start from the beginning,” he said. “Roman Candle.” Cavity Search It was 2005, more than a decade after Roman Candle’s release. The album was and is unabashedly simple, recorded in then-girlfriend JJ Gonson’s basement. Most of the songs feature only Elliott accompanying his own soft vocals on acoustic guitar. Elliott’s biographer William Todd Schultz aptly portrays the album “as a guy jamming with himself” and “totally low-key and casual, almost ridiculously low-fi.”1 My crush and I laid on the floor, heads close but hands folded safely on our stomachs. Kierkegaard’s Aesthetic Life View in Elliott Smith’s Either/Or Camille Richey When people write about Elliott Smith’s music, they cannot help but delve into the angst, hopelessness, and depression of his deceptively poppy choruses. When it comes to discussing the title of Smith’s third album Either/Or, a title lifted straight from Søren Kierkegaard’s published work from 150 years earlier, it is no surprise that what mainly gets compared between Smith and Kierkegaard are their melancholic dispositions—once referred to by Kierkegaard as his “faithful mistress” (Schultz 163). Nelson Gary, a friend of Smith, generally explains the title by saying, “Elliott, having a phi- losophy degree, lived and breathed the melancholy-saturated work of Søren Kierkegaard to the degree that he named an album after one of his books.” Mag- net Magazine says the intriguing title reminds us, “Kierkegaard believed life is a cosmic joke and then you die” (Davis).
