(Alticinae) was successfully reared on its hostplant in outdoor and indoor conditions. Mating, and development from eggs to adults was followed in petri dish cultures. Timing of the stages in these conditions was approximately as follows: Eggs 10 days Larva I 8 days Larva II 7 days Larva III 11 days Prepupa 2 days Pupa 10 days Subterranean adult 2 days TOTAL 50 days The female oviposits on the soil. Larvae spend most of their time in lethargic aggregations on the soil. The pigmentation of prothoracic and anal shields of the larvae serves as a criterion of the instar: in the first instar they are black, in the second, gray, and in the third, they approximate the general body color. A prominent exuvium of oesophageal chitine is drawn out at the larval moltings. This might be a genus specialty, because in Omophoita, an anal exuvium was seen to be more prominent. CHAPTER 11 FLORISTIC ANALYSES Abstract Eighty plant species of the Sekhukhuneland Centre of Plant Endemism were assessed according to the 2000 IUCN categories of threat. Twenty-six of these taxa met the criteria. This analysis together with the level of endemism supports the listing of the region as an important Centre of Plant Endemism that contains a high diversity of plants requiring conservation attention. A first diviSion of the Centre into sub-centres is presented to aid future conservation actions. Endemic plant species are listed, as well as the near-endemic and disjunct taxa that are shared between the Centre and other centres or floristic regions. Major threats to the floristic diversity of Sekhukhuneland are considered and a probable conservation solution is presented. Approximately 2 000 of the plant taxa occurring in the 4 000 km2 of the Sekhukhuneland Centre of Plant Endemism are listed. Taxa in the checklist are arranged alphabetically by family, with the genera and species listed alphabetically within the families. 11.1 Introduction Locating the world's 'hotspots' of biodiversity has long been advocated as one of the primary tactics in conservation (Wilson 1992). South Africa has a rich vascular plant flora and harbours prominent foci of plant diversity and endemism (Cowling & Hilton-Taylor 1994; Van Wyk & Van Wyk 1997), several of which are recognised internationally (Davis et at. 1994; Myers et al. 2000). What still remains to be done, is to identify smaller, lesser known 'hotspots', some of which are often located within already depleted floristic regions, and to investigate the rare and endemic species they contain. -

RESUMO - Lamiaceae e Verbenaceae correspondem às principais famílias da ordem Lamiales distribuídas nas regiões tropicais e temperadas do mundo. Neste trabalho foram feitas análises citológicas de Aegiphila sellowiana Chamisso, Vitex montevidensis Chamisso e Citharexylum myrianthum Chamisso, coletadas em diferentes regiões da bacia do Rio Tibagi, Paraná, Brasil. Os resultados mostraram que A. sellowiana apresenta 2n = 42 cromossomos, maiores do que os de V. montevidensis (2n = 34) e os de C. myrianthum (2n = ca.104), esta com os menores. Porém, as três espécies apresentam núcleos interfásicos do tipo arreticulado a semi-reticulado e padrão de condensação profásico proximal, sem evidências de variação intraespecífi ca ou diferenças interespecífi cas. No entanto, nossos resultados indicam que, do ponto de vista citológico (número e tamanho dos cromossomos), indivíduos das três espécies podem ser identifi cados corretamente e assim, suas sementes serem utilizadas, com segurança, em programas de restauração ambiental na bacia do rio Tibagi. Agius Abstract Lantanophaga pusillidactylus (Walker, 1864) is reported for the first time from the Maltese Islands. The genus Lantanophaga Zimmerman, 1958 is also recorded here for the first time from the Maltese Islands. Distribution, habits of the adult and larval host plant are included. A Maltese name is proposed for this new record. KEY WORDS: Lepidoptera, Pterophoridae, Lantanophaga pusillidactylus , Malta. El género Lantanophaga Zimmerman, 1958 se cita también por primera vez para Malta. Se incluyen datos sobre su distribución, hábitat del adulto y la planta nutricia de la larva. Introduction In the family Pterophoridae, over a thousand species have been described worldwide with over half of these occurring within the Palaearctic region (HEPPNER, 1991).
