Season 2014-2015 Season 2014-2015 Season Review - Results – Tables - Statistics Compiled by Alan Allcock with editorial by Dave Watters The 2014 -15 EVO -STIK Northern Premier League campaign will be widely remembered as the season FC Unit ed of Manchester celebrated their tenth anniversary by avoiding the heartbreak of the play-offs to finally win promotion as top flight champions. Not many will forget the mark by Curzon Ashton either, the Tameside outfit winning successive promotions as the Premier Division’s play-off winners a year after coming up as runaway First Division North champions. In the NPL’s three title races, Mickleover Sports were the clearest winners, taking the title by nine points from runners-up Leek Town who lost out in the play-offs, Sutton Coldfield Town earning the second promotion slot. Salford City dominated the headlines on and off the pitch in First Division North and not just nationally but internationally after their takeover by Manchester United’s Class of 92. They went on to beat runners-up Darlington 1883 to the title. The Quakers did win their play-offs, going up with the Ammies to take another step towards fulfilling their dream of succeeding the old Darlington in the Football League one day. In the top flight, Belper Town, Trafford, Witton Albion and Marine went down but thanks to the demise of Salisbury City, the Mariners celebrated a Football Association reprieve as the relegated club at Step 3 with the best record. New Mills were also saved from dropping out of First Division North in the FA’s annual reshuffle of clubs at Steps 1-4, Padiham returning on their own to Step 5. Regrettably, relegation in First Division South wasn’t decided on the field of play alone, bottom-markers Brigg Town and Rainworth Miners Welfare having already voluntarily resigned from the NPL during the run-in to play at Step 5 of the National League System. It was undoubtedly a memorable season in the FA Cup, Warrington Town and Blyth Spartans earning worldwide acclaim and headlines for reaching the second and third rounds respectively. In the first live game on BBC since 2009, the Wire beat Exeter City 1-0 while Spartans also won in front of the cameras, 2-1 away at Hartlepool United before exiting the competition in the third round after an epic 3-2 defeat at the hands of Birmingham City at Croft Park. In the FA Trophy, FC United of Manchester flew the flag for the league all the way to the quarter-finals, losing 1-0 at Torquay United after beating Chorley in a replay to reach the last eight. The Integro Doodson Sport Cup was lifted at Stockport County’s Edgeley Park by Warrington Town, the FA Cup heroes summoning up their final reserves of strength to beat First Division North rivals Farsley AFC 3-2 on penalties after drawing 0-0 in normal time. League clubs weren’t short of success in county cup competition either with seven signing off with silverware - Matlock Town in Derbyshire, Blyth Spartans in Northumberland, Stafford Rangers in Staffordshire, Skelmersdale United in Liverpool, Stamford AFC in Lincolnshire, Frickley Athletic in the Sheffield & Hallam Senior Cup and Mossley AFC in the Manchester Premier Cup. In the goal-scoring charts, hot-shot Nathan Cartman took the season’s overall ‘golden boot’ with 35 goals split between Harrogate Railway Athletic and Darlington 1883 following his midseason switch to the Quakers. Rushall Olympic’s Aaron Williams emerged as the Premier Division’s top scorer, netting 28 times. In First Division South, Newcastle Town’s Jordan Cole and Jake Woolley couldn’t be separated on 25 apiece. After another season of improvement, the league was in the running to be honoured again at the Football Association’s 2015 Respect awards after being named as the best behaved competition in the senior levels of Non-League football in four out of the last five seasons while monopolising the individual club accolades. In total, nine clubs shared nearly £7000 in league prize money for first, second and third placed finishes in the NPL’s own divisional fair play tables. Newcastle Town led the way as the overall fair play champions, collecting £1500 in prize and the President’s Cup, now awarded annually to the side with the best overall disciplinary record. Blyth Spartans and Bamber Bridge topped the tables in the Premier Division and First Division North. Away from the field of play, the NPL became the first in English football to launch a youth league and academy combining football with further education when the NPL Football Academy opened its doors to its first intake of students at five pilot clubs. By the end of the campaign, eight more clubs had signed up for the 2015-16 season. Mickleover Sports, already celebrating senior success, were inaugural NPLFA Youth League champions. The league's bursary scheme also continued to go from strength to strength, underwriting 50 per cent of the costs for six more coaches to study for UEFA B licences. On social media, the NPL broke through the 10,000 followers mark on Twitter while the monthly EVO-STIK NPL Show spawned a weekly spin-off podcast, the NPL Show Extra. Fittingly after another season of startling successes, England C manager Paul Fairclough handed out the accolades to the stars of the campaign at the fourth annual EVO-STIK NPL Players of the Year Awards. Press Release News…Results…News…Results…Tables… ISSUE No. 38 WEEK ENDING 2nd May REVIEW OF THE WEEK Both Premier Division Play-Off semi-finals went to extra-time with ILKESTON TOWN edging out KENDAL TOWN in a seven goal thriller whilst NANTWICH TOWN, promoted via the play-offs last season, made the top tier Final when pipping GUISELEY 2-1. The Final also went to extra time to demonstrate just how competitive the Premier Division has been this season and after playing the role bridesmaid twice already this season ILKESTON TOWN finally made it to the altar beating Nantwich 2-1 in front of a crowd approaching 2,000. Just as in the top Division it was second and third place teams BELPER TOWN and STOCKSBRIDGE PS who made the First Division South play-off final with the latter having a convincing 5-2 win thanks to a Mark Ward treble against CARLTON TOWN whilst Belper needed just the one goal to oust RUSHALL OLYMPIC. In the Final it was third place Stocksbridge that came out on top thanks to one strike from Andy Ring. There was a big shock in the First Division North play-offs, however, when CURZON ASHTON knocked out second place SKELMERSDALE UNITED after finishing a massive eighteen points adrift of “Skem” whose manager Tommy Lawson must hate the end of season lottery having lost three times in it, twice with Skelmersdale in the last two seasons and once previously with Prescot Cables. NEWCASTLE BLUE STAR then set up the possibility of a North East promotion double following Durham’s success in lifting the title the previous Saturday when they beat COLWYN BAY on penalties on Wednesday and they duly obliged after Curzon failed to repeat their midweek heroics going down 4-1 at Blue Star.

TT1112-133 TT No.133: Andy Gallon - Sun 1st January 2012; Stockport County v Barrow; Conference National; Res: 3-2; Att: 3,301 (341 away); Admission: £16; Programme: £3 (68pp); FGIF Match Rating: *****. It is a crying shame that Edgeley Park never having looked so good coincides with impoverished Stockport County being at their lowest ebb. Yet another Northern club to lose Football League status, the unhappy Hatters, their century-plus membership of the elite curtailed abruptly last May, are enduring an utterly miserable debut season in Conference National. This victory, barely deserved, was only their fourth in 27 league games. No wonder County’s long-suffering fans, several of whom around us had clearly become embittered by the struggles and disappointments of recent seasons, were so overjoyed to hear the final whistle. Terminal decline cannot be much fun. The tip-top upkeep of Edgeley Park owes at least as much to the presence of Sale Sharks rugby union club as the efforts of County, who are now very much the junior partner in a long-standing sharing arrangement. Rugby union, certainly at the top level, appears to be awash with cash, and Edgeley Park, all-seated these days, has benefited accordingly. County might have begun the transformation, but Sale ensure the good work does not go to waste. The well-heeled types who tend to watch rugby union will not (on the whole) tolerate the inadequate facilities found so frequently away from the apex of football’s pyramid. Everywhere you look at Edgeley Park is spick and span. Acres of blue paint and ranks of blue seats tie together very neatly the ground’s four disparate stands.

The two losses were against South Today we welcome Hyde United, a 102 Shields and Buxton, clubs to do well with year old non league outfit and founder their playing budget. If you can afford members of the Northern Premier to pay that sort of money you expect League. Six times winners of the to be near the top of the league at the Manchester Premier Cup, they reached end of the season. However it has to be the first round proper of the FA Cup as maintainable. I’m not saying it isn’t for recently as 2017. I wish them continued these clubs, but I’ve lost count of the success although I hope today is a blip on clubs who lost a rich “sugar-daddy” and that record! plunged into relegation or worse.

Press Release News…Results…News…Results…Tables… ISSUE No. 39 REVIEW OF WEEK Season 03 -04 Final Issue With the Championship safely tucked away HUCKNALL TOWN failed to make it a cup and league double when DROYLSDEN increased their 2-0 League Challenge Cup Final First Leg lead to 4-1 on Tuesday evening. The “Bloods” then added to their dominance in head to head meetings when they returned at the weekend to beat Hucknall in the Peter Swales Memorial League Shield staged annually between the Champions and Cup-Winners. The President’s Cup Final at WORKINGTON produced a crackerjack finale in front of a crowd touching 1,600. The tie see-sawed backwards and forwards in to extra-time and continued in the same vein through the additional thirty minutes before the two legs produced a 6-6 draw with BARROW taking the honours on the away goals rule. The play-offs also produced exciting games with WHITBY TOWN and RADCLIFFE BOROUGH going in to a penalty shoot out that Borough won 8-7 after a 2-2 stalemate. The local Tameside derby between ASHTON UNITED and HYDE UNITED also went to extra-time before the Premier Division outfit made their ranking count over the First Division Champions. But it was the winners of the other two matches BRADFORD PARK AVENUE and BURSCOUGH who made it to the Play Off Final with away victories over Ashton and Radcliffe respectively. Bradford’s win left Ashton to reflect on the fact that they had never been out of the top thirteen that would have qualified them automatically for the Conference North for the last five months of the season until the final week.
