(The match finished 2‐2.) He was then 35‐years‐old and a veteran of more than 450 Football League appearances – all of them after being released by his home‐town club. He played for Bristol City when they won the Associate Members Cup in 1985/86, and also the following year when they lost in the Final on penalties. On leaving his position as youth‐team manager at Vicarage Road he joined the police force, and was on duty in uniform inside the ground when Watford won 4‐0 at Luton Town three‐and‐a‐half years later. Birth index OK. Joined the police in May 1994 and was on duty in uniform inside the ground when Watford won 4‐0 at Luton. A number of injuries along the way didn’t help. Danny Webber was capped at Under-20 level both before and during his first Vicarage Road spell. Birth index OK. Regarding the sums paid to Man Utd, certain of Watford’s directors put up the money under an arrangement by which, should Webber be sold at a profit, they would recoup 65% of the fee; this breached League rules, so it was pretended that the directors had simply donated the money to finance the deal. Lge Cup apps for Manchester Utd. Injured in QPR trial period, following which he underwent rehabilitation. These appearances were only months after he’d been wrongly diagnosed as having tuberculosis and told that his career was over. He became the oldest Watford player to make his début in the Football League, which he did for West Ham United at the age of 36 – the record stood until Filippo Galli’s first Watford appearance eight decades later. During the Great War Webster spent three years in France on active service in the Footballers’ Battalion, which he also represented on the football field. His untimely death in hospital followed an appendix operation. Ilkeston is in Basford reg dist, and there’s more than one possible birth. Death index OK (except “aged 43”), probate nothing. Worked at Waterlows cs 1924 until cs 1926, during which time he was trainer to Watford Old Boys. 1901 census: there’s a possible 14-year-old born Ilkeston, but I think he must be Joseph Webster, aged 15, coal ganger (below ground), parents William & Mary Ann. 1891 census: two possibles, much the more likely being Joseph, 5, parents William (coalminer) & Mary Ann; the other, Joseph, 4, parents Thomas (bricklayer) & Sarah. 1911 census: Joseph Webster, 25, single, pro footballer, born Ilkeston, boarding with Harry Middleton and Alex Stewart at 31 Vicarage Rd.
