Press Release News…Results…News…Results…Tables… ISSUE No. 39 REVIEW OF WEEK Season 03 -04 Final Issue With the Championship safely tucked away HUCKNALL TOWN failed to make it a cup and league double when DROYLSDEN increased their 2-0 League Challenge Cup Final First Leg lead to 4-1 on Tuesday evening. The “Bloods” then added to their dominance in head to head meetings when they returned at the weekend to beat Hucknall in the Peter Swales Memorial League Shield staged annually between the Champions and Cup-Winners. The President’s Cup Final at WORKINGTON produced a crackerjack finale in front of a crowd touching 1,600. The tie see-sawed backwards and forwards in to extra-time and continued in the same vein through the additional thirty minutes before the two legs produced a 6-6 draw with BARROW taking the honours on the away goals rule. The play-offs also produced exciting games with WHITBY TOWN and RADCLIFFE BOROUGH going in to a penalty shoot out that Borough won 8-7 after a 2-2 stalemate. The local Tameside derby between ASHTON UNITED and HYDE UNITED also went to extra-time before the Premier Division outfit made their ranking count over the First Division Champions. But it was the winners of the other two matches BRADFORD PARK AVENUE and BURSCOUGH who made it to the Play Off Final with away victories over Ashton and Radcliffe respectively. Bradford’s win left Ashton to reflect on the fact that they had never been out of the top thirteen that would have qualified them automatically for the Conference North for the last five months of the season until the final week. Bank Holiday Monday saw the Final go to extra time before BRADFORD PARK AVENUE, after 47 and one third games, claimed the last place in the Conference North with two goals in the extra period denying BURSCOUGH. MULLEN GOES AT COLWYN BAY Colwyn Bay boss Jimmy Mullen became the eighteenth and final managerial casualty of the 2003/2004 UniBond League campaign when he resigned his position for “personal reasons” immediately after the Welsh club’s final game of the season at home to Bridlington Town. The former Blackpool manager who took Burnley from the Fourth Division to the First Division during a six year stint between 1991 and 1996 took over the reins of the Welsh outfit from Colin Caton during the last close season but couldn’t guide them to recapture their Premier Division status they had lost under Caton. ENDSLEIGH SPORTS INSURANCE “GOALSCORING AWARDS” HARROGATE TOWN and GATESHEAD have won the Endsleigh Sports Insurance “Goalscoring Awards” for April. Harrogate Town scored an amazing 21 goals during the month in seven games whilst Gateshead found the net 14 times in half a dozen games. It was the second time this season that Harrogate had lifted this prize. Droylsden, who became the first top tier club to win the award twice this season, took the Premier Division prize with eight games unbeaten despite meeting Champions Hucknall Town three times in the month, twice away. Their nearest challengers were Vauxhall Motors who were also unbeaten but had played two games less. Kendal Town were the unlikely winners of the First Division after being rock bottom at the beginning of April. However they overturned a deficit of nine points in the month on next to bottom Kidsgrove Athletic to lift themselves off the last rung of the ladder by the end of the campaign. Kendal’s award was presented to them at the Bank Holiday Monday game against Manchester United Reserves held to mark the official switching on the Lake District club’s new floodlights. The game produced a sell out capacity 2,500 with the honour of switching on the new lights going to the League’s CEO Duncan Bayley. UNIBOND “FAIR PLAY” AWARDS GAINSBOROUGH TRINITY and LINCOLN UNITED won UniBond’s monthly “Fair Play” awards for a second time in April which helped both clubs also capture first place and £1,000 each in prize money in the season’s final tables. Joint second in the Premier Division were Bradford Park Avenue and Hucknall Town who both receive £625 in prize money whilst fourth place Ashton United pick up £250. Second place in the First Division went to Workington who pocket £750 with Witton Albion taking home £500 for third place and Farsley Celtic £250 for fourth place. The season’s final Fair Play tables can be found elsewhere in this release.
