Ojai, CA

Marcia Mae Tenpenny

Marcia entered into the Arms of the Lord, with the comfort and loving support of her family, on March 29, 2010, after a short battle with cancer. Marcia was preceded in death by her beloved husband Spike Tenpenny.

Known throughout Ojai and Ventura County in her life’s calling as a full-time Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother to her six children, two foster children, twelve grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Marcia was born March 13, 1933, a birth date she shares with her first-born granddaughter Rachel, in Valley City, North Dakota, and grew up in Iowa Falls, Iowa. After high school Marcia attended the University of Northern Iowa. Upon completing a semester of college Marcia moved to southern California. Encouraged by family friends, Marcia joined the Navy as a WAVE, with her stunning natural beauty; Marcia wore her uniform proudly and was very active in the various roles of her military service.

While stationed at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida, Marcia caught the eye of a young, handsome sailor by the name of Dorris Ray Tenpenny “Spike” of Wartrace Tennessee, and not long after they were married. Both Spike and Marcia were honorably discharged from the Navy in 1955 and were married for 53 years.

Marcia and Spike headed west to southern California setting roots in Torrance. While raising their six children in Torrance, they stumbled upon the beautiful Ojai Valley. After many weekend visits, with all six children in tow, they made the permanent move to Ojai in 1969.

Marcia was a full-time mother, feeling blessed in being able to raise her family in the beauty and rural splendor of the Topa Topa Mountains and the Ojai Valley. She quickly came to be known as a true “Rice Roader Mom” to any and all the many friends who frequented the Tenpenny house. If you were hungry or just needed a place to hang out, “Momma T” accommodated all and rejoiced in her full nest.

As her family grew, Marcia was a regular fixture at all the various sporting events her children participated in. She was known for her zealous cheering of her children, and their many friends that participated with them. The zeal for cheering carried into the next generation as Marcia encouraged and attended the many sporting events of all her grandchildren.

Marcia’s greatest gift was that of being a mother. For many years Marcia used her nurturing ways, caring for premature infants, providing the loving embrace and the important human contact needed by these babies. Marcia’s beautiful singing voice graced the church choir for many years. Her voice also provided an even deeper gift, as she used it to soothe and comfort the little preemies she so lovingly cared for.

Another of her many gifts was her pen and letter writing. Every Christmas card, letter or note one received from Marcia was hand-written displaying her beautiful long hand, keeping everyone connected. Truly a lost art that Marcia was known for and a treasure to keep.

Marcia is preceded in death by her identical twin great-granddaughters Aubrey and Ellie Crawford.

Marcia is survived by her six children: Tom and Leigh Tenpenny of Paso Robles; Stan and Clara Tenpenny and David Tenpenny all of Ojai; Rachel and Bart Mathews of Ventura; Becky and Louie Hurak of Ojai; and Cary Tenpenny of Minden, Nevada. Grandchildren are Johnathan Tenpenny and Jessica Barbito; Rachel Crawford and husband Kirk, Rebecca McCurnin and husband Jess; Crystal Tenpenny; Beau, Jake and Travis Mathews; Kassidy and Kambria Tenpenny; Heath and Chance Hurak. Great-grandchildren are Dustin Crawford, Annella Jean and Leah Rae McCurnin. Marcia is also survived by her loving and only sister Shirley Washington along with brother- in-law John and nephews Jim, Gary and Stuart Washington.

Marcia loved her family and enjoyed the great miracle of gardening. She spent every spring preparing and then planting her garden, often sharing the harvest with friends.

Marcia enjoyed her friends in Ojai and has many lifelong friends and family in Iowa and Tennessee.

With her journey here on earth at an end, Marcia will be welcomed into the “great reunion” with those she loved and missed that have gone before her.

A service in her Memory will be held at the Ojai Community Church, April 10th, 2010, at 10:30 am, officiated by Pastor Leonard DeWitt. A reception will be held at the church. Final internment will be in Shelbyville, Tennessee, where Marcia will be laid to rest next to her husband and sailor Dorris Ray Tenpenny “Spike”.

Loretta Butler Crosslin

Ms. Loretta Crosslin, born November 21, 1922, formerly of Shelbyville, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2010 at Mercy West Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee with her loving daughters by her side. She was a joyous Christian who devoutly followed the Shepherd’s Chapel services and loved the teachings of the Lord. She was born in Lewisburg, Tennessee, one of ten children of Arthur Joseph Butler and Josephine Haskins Butler. She married Aubrey Lee Crosslin in 1944 who was the love of her life. In 1945 their daughter Jo Ann was born, and in 1950 their daughter Mary Elizabeth was born. In later years as an independent woman, Loretta learned to dance and enjoyed doing the two-step at the senior citizens centers in Manchester and Fayetteville. She was a generous and kind-hearted person, always smiled, loved to fish, and never turned down a good game of “Aggravation.” Her collections of salt and pepper shakers and wind chimes are famous. Her favorite memories were of the cruise she took with her daughter Mary and granddaughters Jennifer and Lisa, as well as jetting around the country with her daughter JoAnn and son-in-law Ronnie. She loved house boating with son-in-law Sam and daughter Mary, and fishing off the dock. She took pride in her family and loved each family member fiercely. She wanted everyone to be healthy and happy. She especially worried about the welfare of her fraternal twin sister, Henrietta, and whether or not she had food or clothing. Often she sacrificed for herself to ensure Henrietta was provided for. She was truly an angel on earth and a precious soul.
