  • Boatsheds All Around” Page 2
“Boatsheds all Introduction Berrys Bay takes its name from Alexander Berry, around” business partner and brother-in-law of early land grantee Edward Wollstonecraft. The whole of A walking tour of eastern Berrys present day suburbs Wollstonecraft and Bay Waverton were part of the large Wollstonecraft land grant (524 acres). Edward Wollstonecraft Distance: 3 km and Alexander Berry were business partners Approximate time: 3 hours who settled on this side of the harbour and built Grading: medium to high Crows Nest Cottage - from which the suburb of Crows Nest takes its name. The Berry/Wollstonecraft partnership also received land on the South Coast at the Shoalhaven River. Alexander Berry was married to Elizabeth Wollstonecraft (Edward's sister) and after Edward's early death in 1832, the partnership was shared by Alexander and Elizabeth. Elizabeth died in 1845 and their impressive pyramid shaped tomb stands as a memorial to her in St Thomas' Rest Park. Upon Alexander Berry's death in 1872 the land at Coolangatta (on the Shoalhaven) and in North Sydney passed to David Berry - the town of Berry bears his name. This walk takes in the western half of McMahons Point fronting Berrys Bay and opposite Balls Head. In 1817 Governor Macquarie gave a grant of 80-acres of land on the North Shore to ex- convict William Blue and he named this area, encompassing the present day suburb of McMahons Point, „Northampton Farm‟. This was a working farm on which he and his family cultivated vegetables and fruit for the Sydney market. Prior to receiving his land grant he was living in the Rocks and had started the first ferry service across the Harbour from Dawes Point to Blues Point in 1807.

WM is more severe in oysters cultured deeper in the water column and appears linked to higher salinities. Current dogma is that WM is caused by the microcell parasite Bonamia rough- leyi, but evidence linking clinical signs and histopathology to molecular data identifying bonami- asis is lacking. We conducted a longitudinal study between February and November 2010 in 2 estuaries where WM has occurred (Georges and Shoalhaven Rivers). Results from molecular testing of experimental oysters for Bonamia spp. were compared to clinical disease signs and histopathology. Available environmental data from the study sites were also collated and com- pared. Oyster condition declined over the study period, coinciding with decreasing water temper- atures, and was inversely correlated with the presence of histological lesions.

Introduction 1.1 Study Background and Purpose In 2005 North Sydney Council finalised a Recreation Needs Study that examined sport, recreation and open space supply in the Local Government Area (LGA), the community’s existing and emerging needs and recommended a sport and recreation strategy for the coming 10 years. One of the key recommendations of the Recreation Needs Study was to undertake a specific study to identify needs and opportunities for enhancing water based recreation activities in the North Sydney area. GHD was engaged to undertake this water based recreation study. The study methodology involves: » An assessment of existing water based recreation facility provision. » An assessment of demand for such facilities and associated recreation opportunities through a review of demographic information and a community consultation phase.
