New online navigation guide SW Maritime has launched the Vessel Navigation Interactive Guide, a new online resource to assist Nboaters expand and reinforce their knowledge about navigation and boating rules. Adapted from the online education modules developed by Britain’s Royal National Lifeboat Institution and reproduced on NSW Maritime’s website with the RNLI’s permission, the new Guide includes information on navigation buoyage, signs and lights, chart symbols and the right of way rules governing all vessels. This agreement with RNLI is part of NSW Maritime’s drive to build upon existing and develop new partnerships in safety that will help underpin a culture of safe boating in this State. In each section there are examples to help viewers gain a clear understanding of the issues surrounding marine navigation. Within the buoyage sections, viewers can alter the scene from day to night to obtain a clear view of the shapes, colours and lights identifying each type of marks as the light changes. The guide also includes interactive quizzes which allow boaters to test their own knowledge of the give-way rules by responding to a series of scenarios, which are linked to full explanations of the boating rules provided by the NSW Maritime Boating Handbook. BIA of NSW LOGBOOK March 2010 - 29 Boat for life targets canoe and kayak safety

he two young Australian adventurers who became the fi rst kayakers to cross the Tasman Sea will join a NSW TMaritime campaign to promote the responsible and safe use of paddle craft. Ports and Waterways Minister Paul McLeay has announced Justin Jones and James Castrission have been appointed the latest safety ambassadors in the Boat for Life Campaign. “The use of paddle craft is on the rise. It is a simple and affordable way of enjoying the world famous waterways we have here in NSW,” Mr McLeay said. “With this increased activity, Justin and James make the ideal ambassadors to promote the safe use of craft such as canoes and kayaks.”

The use of paddle craft is on the rise. It is a simple and affordable way of enjoying the world famous waterways we have here in NSW.

Justin Jones and James Castrission set out on their epic journey in November 2007, paddling from Forster in NSW, to New Plymouth New Zealand in 62 days. Their adventure, documented in their book Crossing the Ditch involved kayaking 3318km and braving 10 metre swells and winds of over 50 knots to become the fi rst kayak expedition to cross the Tasman Sea.

Justin James (left) and James Castrission are donating their time Boat to the Boat for Life Campaign. “Justin and James have donated their time to join the Boat for for Life campaign which already includes footballer and fi shing Life identity Andrew ‘ET’ Ettingshausen on trailer boat safety and renowned sailor Pete Goss on trip preparation.” Mr McLeay said with many people getting out on the water at this time of the year, paddle craft users are reminded to observe fundamental maritime laws for safe and responsible boating. These include: • Keep a proper lookout at all times; • Keep to the right side of channels and waterways; • Keep clear of and do not cross close ahead of larger vessels; • Comply with lifejacket requirements; and Our Safety • Go easy on the drink and keep under 0.05.
