What a delightful weekend of activity we had during the Oranui Games on Auckland Anniversary weekend. It was wonderful to see so many people: visitors and members alike: enjoying themselves; either taking part in the sport events or just having a relaxing time. At the outset, Brad the President gave a brief outline when the Oranui Games started in its present form from about year 2000. The official address and flag raising was presented by Les Olsen, the club Patron. Les mentioned that the forerunner to the Oranui games was the Inter-club sports days which began in 1966 to foster better relations between the clubs in the Auckland Waikato regions. These weekend activities were usually held around Auckland Anniversary weekend - depending on what other activities were being held by the other clubs at the time. In the years when the NZNF Rally was held at Auckland the Anniversary weekend was usually a relaxed camping and Sonya & Taya about to raise the flags socialising affair with casual sport activity prevalent.

All 2 days of it? My understanding is that we will now get some more settled weather. I hope so. Jude has now retired and we are enjoying some time together. It is different now she is around all day but there are real positives. We are both dedicated to the club so will be able to spend a little more time there looking after visitors when Constance is away. Our visitor rate is really up this year and without mainly Constance and Helen’s help it would have been hard to handle. Thanks once again to your dedication. Also your committee is working like a well oiled machine and I am pleased to say that everybody’s input is making my job much easier.

TTrraavveellddiiaarryy BBrriiggiittttee && HHeeiinnzz New Zealand/Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud CChhaapptteerr 1122 November 2005 - June 2006 New Zealand/Aotearoa, the land of the long white cloud We arrived in New Zealand on November 12, 2005 and returned to the same YHA Hostel in Auckland where we had been staying for 3 days before going to Vanuatu. During the first week we were mainly busy sorting out pictures and writing our travel diary about that visit - these stories do not only take a long time to read, they also take a very long time to be written! Auckland; the City of Sails They city of Auckland sits on a hilly narrow strip of land between two scenic harbours; the western one opening towards the Tasman sea the eastern towards the Pacific ocean. They proclaimed it "the city of sails", as hundreds of sailing yachts can be seen on any sunny day pushed around by an ever present strong wind. The skyline recently gained a new landmark, when the 328 meter high Skytower opened for the new millennium. The area around our youth-hostel edged the city centre and was also very popular with students from Asia, which resulted in the establishment of uncountable little cheap eateries representing every country between India and China. Especially Korean and Japanese restaurants' employees often spoke very little English, but as they mainly served (language-) students from the same countries, they usually didn't have any problem - only with us... A number of similarities to Australia were quite obvious, as for instance the many shops and companies that have established themselves here too.
