A spring clean out at the Wel- lington Central Police Station has revealed a taonga box containing more than 80 items of ‘‘spiritual significance’’. Now staff are searching for the owners of the taonga, or treasures, and precious items that have been handed in to the police over the past decade. Most items in the taonga box are carved pounamu and bone necklaces, but there are also bibles, family photos, rosaries, carved patu and a plastic Jesus. Police need to find the owners by the end of January or the items will be passed on to churches and master carvers who may return the items to the land. ‘‘About 10 years ago they created a box and just kept them hoping somebody would come and claim them some day,’’ Cus- tomer Services Manager Sharon Johnston said. Standard procedure for lost items handed into the police sta- tion was to auction or destroy the property after three months, she said. But the taonga were kept at the station, and the collection has accumulated over the years. The station has only basic Sharon Johnston with some of the taonga that police are trying to reunite with their owners. The playground at South Wel- lington Intermediate School was closed earlier this year after changes in safety regulations made it unsafe for children. Deputy principal Rauru Walker said while the closure had been unfortunate, there were plans to get it back up to scratch as soon as possible. ‘‘We’ve had people come in and look at it and fundraising efforts are ongoing.’’ But Juvenka said the lengthy closure had impacted him and his classmates, particularly during their free time. ‘‘At the start of this year, when the playground wasn’t active, I found that there wasn’t really anything for me to do in lunchtimes and it was like that for a lot of other people too.’’ On his mother’s suggestion he decided to use his passion for cyc- ling to help kickstart the Year 8 student Juvenka Earthson is cycling the length of the North Island to raise the money needed to fix his school’s playground. CHELSEA MCLAUGHLIN

Dave Woulfe grew up enjoying all the adventures Wellington has to offer and now he wants to help everyone else experience the same. Woulfe runs three outdoors businesses in Wellington: The Boatshed at Days Bay, which hires out kayaks and paddle boards; The Bikeshed Pencarrow, which rents bikes; and Cycle Rimutaka, which arranges trips for people on the Rimutaka cycle trail. The businesses have just launched Everyone’s Adventure, a summer campaign designed to make them accessible to every- one. Woulfe has figured out the businesses need to bring in $300,000 this summer to cover overheads, safe practices, rent and staff wages. Once they’ve covered the $300,000, their gear will be free to use for the public for the rest of summer, until Easter Weekend 2017. ‘‘I was lucky enough to grow up in a family with bikes and kayaks available,’’ he says.
