THE SAGA OF ROBOCON Nirma Education and Research Foundation (NERF) Renowned industrialist and philanthropist Dr Karsanbhai K Patel, the founder of the Nirma Group of Industries, established the Nirma Education and Research Foundation (NERF) in the year 1994 with a vision to promote higher education and provide excellent educational facilities to the youth in India. In 1995, Nirma Institute of Technology, affiliated to Gujarat University was established by the NERF. It was followed by the establishment of Nirma Institute of Management in 1996. In the year 2003, the Government of Gujarat approved the proposal of the NERF to found the Nirma University, Ahmedabad. Hence, the Nirma University was established under a special Act passed by the Gujarat State Legislative Assembly. The University Grants Commission (UGC) duly recognised the University under the Section 2 (f) of the UGC Act. The NERF is equally committed to school education. It strongly believes in the fact that a strong foundation is a prerequisite for education. With this philosophy, it runs two schools ‘Nirma Vidyavihar’ at Bodakdev and Chharodi in Ahmedabad, where the emphasis is laid on to provide value-based education clubbed up with innovative educational practices. About Nirma University Established in the year 2003, the Nirma University, Ahmedabad is a research-oriented, student-centric, multidisciplinary, not-for-profit state private university. Within a short period of its existence, it has emerged as a nationally renowned higher education institution. The University and its constituent institutes are highly ranked by different ranking agencies. Nirma University is duly recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under Section 2 (f) of the UGC Act. The University is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). The University is a member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU). Dr Karsanbhai K Patel, Chairman, Nirma Group of Industries and Nirma Education and Research Foundation (NERF), is the President of the Nirma University. Under his leadership, the University is expanding every passing year and moving from strength to strength. Spread across the sprawling lush green 115-acres campus, the University has a host of institutes, departments and centres, including Institute of Technology, Institute of Management, Institute of Pharmacy, Institute of Science, Institute of Law, Institute of Architecture & Planning, Institute of Commerce, Department of Design, Faculty of Doctoral Studies and Research, Centre for Continuing Education, Centre for Entrepreneurship, Centre for Advanced Instrumentation and Centre for Robotics and Automation. These institutions offer numerous undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes. Apart from these, the University also offers several certificate and diploma programmes. About Institute of Technology Institute of Technology presently offers different undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes in various branches of engineering in addition to MCA programme, and Integrated BTech (CSE-MBA). The Institute is renowned for imparting quality education, active research and also in nurturing the students for holistic development, accomplished through Students Engagement Tools like Continuous Evaluation, Outcome Based Education, Blended Learning, Active use of MOOCs, Departmental and Institute Electives, Industrial visits, Industrial projects, Expert lectures, Soft Skills development, Critical Thinking training, Yoga classes and many more. The institute provides a hands-on experience to its students through its various laboratories. The Robotic Lab of Institute of Technology is a well-known facility developed to encourage and support the students of the Institute to take part in various Robotic competitions. More details about the lab are available at: https://technology.nirmauni.ac.in/campus-life/student-life/robotic-lab/ Team Nirma Robocon, comprising undergraduate students of Institute of Technology, Nirma University has been consistently participating in the event since its inception. The team has won the National Championship 8 times so far and represented India at international events hosted by Japan (2002), Thailand (2003, 2011), Malaysia (2006), India (2008, 2014), Indonesia (2015) and Vietnam (2018). About Robocon The ABU Asia-Pacific Robot Contest (ABU Robocon) is an Asian Oceanian College Robot Competition, founded in 2002 by Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union. In the said competition, robots designed by the undergraduate students from over 20 countries compete to complete a task within a set period of time. The contest aims to create friendship among young people with similar interests who will lead their countries in the 21st century, as well as help advance engineering and broadcasting technologies in the region. The event is broadcast in many countries through ABU member broadcasters. Each year the competition is based on a different theme, where two or more robots must be used to complete the tasks. One of the robots would be manual control while the others are automatic. The best robots usually weight more than 10 kg and span in one square meter area. To build the robots, contestants, who are restricted to be undergraduate students, must possess rich knowledge in programming, mechanical and electronic circuit design. Each game is between two teams, often named red and blue. The playing field is symmetrical and robots from both teams start in the same condition (except for Robocon 2015 which employed a turn-based game based on badminton). A typical game (except for Robocon 2015) lasts for three minutes but can end sooner if one team achieves the victory which immediately finishes the game. In case no team achieve the winning condition, the team that gets a higher score after three minutes is declared a winner. The earlier editions of Robocon tend to emphasise the competitiveness of the game, in which winners achieve their win by employing strategic approaches to deploy their robots as well as preventing their opponent from reaching the goal. For example, this strategy was notable in Vietnam's win in Robocon 2004 and 2006; and China's win in Robocon 2008. To mitigate such problems, later editions reduced the combat nature and more emphasis was put on technology, designing and making the robot perform complicated maneuvers, which require teams to be more creative in designing robots. Format of the Robocon Competition Every year different member countries of ABU organise an International Robocon event generally in the month of August. The host country declares the theme (problem statement) one year in advance. Based on the same theme, every member country organises a National Level competition to decide the national winner. The national winner gets a chance to participate in the International competition to represent the respective country. Being a member of the ABU, Doordarshan organises the national level contest in India and the winner of the national event gets an opportunity to represent India at the international event.
