  • Proposed Endangered Status for 23 Plants From
55862 Federal Register I Vol. 56. No. 210 I Wednesday, October 30, 1991 / Proposed Rules rhylidosperma (no common name (NCN)), Die//ia laciniata (NCN), - Exocarpos luteolus (heau),~Hedyotis cookiana (‘awiwi), Hibiscus clay-i (Clay’s hibiscus), Lipochaeta fauriei (nehe), Lipochaeta rnicrantha (nehe), Lipochaeta wairneaensis (nehe), Lysimachia filifolla (NCN), Melicope haupuensis (alani), Melicope knudsenii (alani), Melicope pal/ida (alani), Melicope quadrangularis (alani) Munroidendron racemosum (NCN). Nothocestrum peltatum (‘aiea), Peucedanurn sandwicense (makou). Phyllostegia wairneae (NCN), Pteraiyxia kauaiensis (kaulu), Schiedea spergulina (NCN), and Solanurn sandwicense (popolo’aiakeakua). All but seven of the species are or were endemic to the island of Kauai, Hawaiian Islands; the exceptions are or were found on the islands of Niihau, Oahu, Molokai, Maui, and/or Hawaii as well as Kauai. The 23 plant species and their habitats have been variously affected or are currently threatened by 1 or more of the following: Habitat degradation by wild, feral, or domestic animals (goats, pigs, mule deer, cattle, and red jungle fowl); competition for space, light, water, and nutrients by naturalized, introduced vegetation; erosion of substrate produced by weathering or human- or animal-caused disturbance; recreational and agricultural activities; habitat loss from fires; and predation by animals (goats and rats). Due to the small number of existing individuals and their very narrow distributions, these species and most of their populations are subject to an increased likelihood of extinction and/or reduced reproductive vigor from stochastic events. This proposal. if made final, would implement the Federal protection and DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR recovery provisions provided by the Fish and Wildlife Service Act.

  • Taming the Wild Stewartia©
1 Boland-Tim-2019B-Taming-Stewartia Taming the Wild Stewartia© Timothy M. Boland and Todd J. Rounsaville Polly Hill Arboretum, 809 State Road, West Tisbury, Massachusetts 02575, USA [email protected] Keywords: Asexual propagation, native trees, plant collections, seeds, Stewartia SUMMARY The Polly Hill Arboretum (PHA) began working with native stewartia in 1967. Our founder, Polly Hill, was devoted to growing trees from seed. In 2006, the Polly Hill Arboretum was recognized as the Nationally Accredited Collection holder for stewartia. This status has guided our collection development, particularly on focused seed expeditions, which began in 2007. The PHA has been successful growing both species from seed, however, overwintering survival and transplanting of juvenile plants has proved more challenging. New insights into winter storage of seedlings is beginning to shed light on this problem. Experimentation with overwintering rooted cuttings has revealed that plants have preferred temperature and chilling requirements. These new overwintering protocols have thus far yielded positive results. Recent work with tissue culture has also shown promising results with both species. Future work includes grafting superior clones of our native stewartia onto Asiatic species in an effort to overcome the problematic issues of overwintering, transplantability, and better resistance to soil borne pathogens. Our Plant Collections Network (PCN) development plan outlines our next phase work with stewartia over the upcoming several years. The results of this work will be shared in future years as we continue to bring these exceptional small flowering trees into commercial production. 2 INTRODUCTION The commitment to building Polly Hill Arboretum’s (PHA) stewartia collection is based on our founder Polly Hill’s history with the genus and our own desire to encourage the cultivation of these superb small-flowering trees in home gardens.

  • Vegetative Propagation
VEGETATIVE PROPAGATION MICROPROPAGATION : AN IMPORTANT TOOL IN THE CON S ERVATION OF ENDANGERED HA W AIIAN PLANT S Nellie Sugii and Charles Lamoureux (808) 988-3177 [email protected] [email protected] Harold L. Lyon Arboretum University of Hawai‘i at Manoa 3860 Manoa Road Honolulu, Hawai‘i 96822 Abstract About half the taxa of native Hawaiian vascular plants are endangered in the biological sense. Some 25% have already been federally listed as endangered or threatened (272 endangered, 10 threatened); 49.5% of federally listed endangered plant species native to the U.S. are Hawaiian species. About 300 more have been significantly depleted and are currently treated as Species of Concern. Many endangered Hawaiian plants are exceedingly rare. Eleven taxa are currently known from only a single specimen of each remaining in the wild; more than 100 species currently have 20 or fewer plants remaining in the wild. Many rare Hawaiian plants have recalcitrant seeds, and standard seed storage techniques will not provide satisfactory long-term storage for maintenance of genetic diversity. In 1991 Lyon Arboretum initiated a project to apply any appropriate micropropaga- tion techniques to the conservation of rare Hawaiian plants. These techniques include tissue culture and cloning, as well as embryo culture, immature and mature seed culture. When material is available, embryo and seed cultures are the techniques of choice, in order to maximize genetic variability. The objectives of the project include (a) prevention of extinction of Hawaiian plant taxa, (b) propagating plants for use in approved restoration and reintroduction projects, and for garden use, and (c) main- taining an in vitro genetic safety net for the most critically endangered taxa.

  • Family Classification
1.0 GENERAL INTRODUCTION 1.1 Henckelia sect. Loxocarpus Loxocarpus R.Br., a taxon characterised by flowers with two stamens and plagiocarpic (held at an angle of 90–135° with pedicel) capsular fruit that splits dorsally has been treated as a section within Henckelia Spreng. (Weber & Burtt, 1998 [1997]). Loxocarpus as a genus was established based on L. incanus (Brown, 1839). It is principally recognised by its conical, short capsule with a broader base often with a hump-like swelling at the upper side (Banka & Kiew, 2009). It was reduced to sectional level within the genus Didymocarpus (Bentham, 1876; Clarke, 1883; Ridley, 1896) but again raised to generic level several times by different authors (Ridley, 1905; Burtt, 1958). In 1998, Weber & Burtt (1998 ['1997']) re-modelled Didymocarpus. Didymocarpus s.s. was redefined to a natural group, while most of the rest Malesian Didymocarpus s.l. and a few others morphologically close genera including Loxocarpus were transferred to Henckelia within which it was recognised as a section within. See Section 4.1 for its full taxonomic history. Molecular data now suggests that Henckelia sect. Loxocarpus is nested within ‗Twisted-fruited Asian and Malesian genera‘ group and distinct from other didymocarpoid genera (Möller et al. 2009; 2011). 1.2 State of knowledge and problem statements Henckelia sect. Loxocarpus includes 10 species in Peninsular Malaysia (with one species extending into Peninsular Thailand), 12 in Borneo, two in Sumatra and one in Lingga (Banka & Kiew, 2009). The genus Loxocarpus has never been monographed. Peninsular Malaysian taxa are well studied (Ridley, 1923; Banka, 1996; Banka & Kiew, 2009) but the Bornean and Sumatran taxa are poorly known.

  • Propagation of Stewartia Pseudocamellia Var. Koreana by Cuttings
Jan.-Feb.-Mar. ORNAMENTALS R. L. Ticknor, OSU Horticulturist, North 1984 Willamette Experiment Station, Aurora, NORTHWEST Vol. 8, Issue 1 Oregon ARCHIVES Page 17 PROPAGATION OF STEWARTIA PSEUDOCAMELLIA VAR. KOREANA BY CUTTINGS Japanese Stewartia (Stewartia pseudocamellia) and Korean Stewartia (Stewartia pseudocamellia var. koreana, formerly classified as Stewartia koreana) are not widely found in the trade. They are small trees (35-60 feet) with dense pyramidal habit. The summer flowers, fall color and interesting bark pattern during the winter make it an outstanding landscape specimen. The flower is very similar to that of a single camellia, to which stewartias are closely related (hence the name of this species). The white flowers 2-3 inches in diameter, with purple stamens, appear in July for several weeks when few other woody plants are in bloom. The leaves are dark green in summer turning orange to red-purple in the fall. The redbrown bark exfoliates in large thin flakes to expose green inner bark and produces a distinctive appearance. Seeds of various species of this genus all appear to require warm stratification followed by chilling before germination will occur. Under normal conditions these seeds would be 'two-year' dormancy types. However, freshly dispersed seed can be given a warm treatment for 150 days to 180 days at fluctuating temperatures of 68 to 86 degrees fahrenheit and then a 90 day cold treatment at 41 degrees fahrenheit to promote germination the following early summer. Stewartia may also be vegetatively propagated. In research at the North Willamette Experiment Station, softwood cuttings of Japanese stewartia and Korean stewartia were taken June 30, 1981, and dipped in talc powder containing 0.8% IBA plus a fungicide.
