Sir Leonard Woolley’s excavation is still fundamental to our knowledge of archaeology in that region. Current thought criticises his approach to and interpretation of his work, as having been “Bible driven” and of little scientific validity, but ignores the value of understanding the relationship between the excavator and the wider community from which his funding derived. Drawing on the Ogden archive, this study is our first opportunity to examine how knowledge about the Ur excavations was disseminated, how the archaeological past has been created and used, and how these interpretations presented entered the zeitgeist and still resonate today. As a result of my initial research findings, I gained access to the family archives of the goldsmith James Ogden, a substantial but previously unresearched body of material that provides an almost complete photographic record of the inter-war archaeology in this region as well as a comprehensive record of press coverage and public reaction. It also contains many unpublished letters between those involved at the time, explaining their methods and motivations. This archive complements substantial quantities of unstudied material in other archives of museums and learned societies. Taken together, the archival material provides a fuller understanding of the motivations behind a highly choreographed publicity campaign that successfully enabled the excavation to continue when threatened by inter-war financial shortages. This research elicits an understanding of the social, cultural and economic factors that shaped archaeology in a society that was uneasily assimilating the impact of the new sciences on a still largely Bible reading public. I analyse all the archives in the wider context of the role played by this campaign in shaping contemporary knowledge of the archaeology of Iraq, as well as reflecting inter- war British and Iraqi society. Archaeological activity was being conducted against the dramatically changing backdrop of the Near East after the First World War, the emergence of the nation states of the area, and a growing aggression and hostility to western occupation. This exhibition was based on the private collections of two of Harrogate’s former well to do citizens – one of whom was James R. Ogden. The short biography stated that Ogden had a combined passion for jewellery and the history of languages, and that this had brought him to the attention of Howard Carter who had used Ogden’s expert knowledge to assist him with reports on the gold work at the tomb of Tutankhamun.

    The Doctrine of the Hittite The term Hittite has a twofold use in the OLD TESTAMENT. Usually it designates a relatively unimportant ethnic group living in Palestine since the days of the patriarchs. (Gen 15:19-21). These people, called the "sons of Heth," were descended from Noah's son Ham through Canaan (Gen 10:15; 1Ch 1:13) and were settled in the central hills of Palestine. (Num 13:29; Jos 11:3) In a few cases, however, the term Hittite is used in the OLD TESTAMENT to designate outsiders, non-Semitic peoples living in the north, who were to be respected and feared as a great power. (1Ki 11:1; 2Ki 7:6-7; 2Ch 1:17). These were the Hittites so famous from extrabiblical historical sources. Although it has been suggested that the small enclaves of Hittites in central Palestine were part of the northern Hittites who migrated south early in the 2nd millennim B.C., there need be no connection between the two groups at all, except for a coincidental similarity of name. The Indo-European Hittites who entered Anatolia (Turkey) and the Near East around 2000 from the steppes of inner Asia received their name more or less by accident, by virtue of the fact that they settled in territory previously held by an earlier non-Indo- European group called Hatti-people (or Hattians). Henceforth in this doctrine the three groups will be called "sons of Heth," "Hittites," and "Hattians" respectively, to avoid confusion. The red and black highly burnished Khirbet Kerah products found in Palestine are virtually identical with pottery in central Anatolia and the Kurgan homeland in Transcaucasia in the 3rd millennium B.C.

The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC.

    HEAVENLY PRIESTHOOD IN THE APOCALYPSE OF ABRAHAM The Apocalypse of Abraham is a vital source for understanding both Jewish apocalypticism and mysticism. Written anonymously soon after the destruction of the Second Jerusalem Temple, the text envisions heaven as the true place of worship and depicts Abraham as an initiate of the celestial priesthood. Andrei A. Orlov focuses on the central rite of the Abraham story – the scapegoat ritual that receives a striking eschatological reinterpretation in the text. He demonstrates that the development of the sacerdotal traditions in the Apocalypse of Abraham, along with a cluster of Jewish mystical motifs, represents an important transition from Jewish apocalypticism to the symbols of early Jewish mysticism. In this way, Orlov offers unique insight into the complex world of the Jewish sacerdotal debates in the early centuries of the Common Era. Initially constructed at the end of the third millennium BC by the king Ur-Nammu, the ziggurat eventually fell into disrepair and was restored by the Neo-Babylonian king Nabonidus in the sixth century BC. The ziggurat was dedicated to the moon god Sîn, who also had a cult center at Haran in the north.     6 The Unknown Abraham Neglected Evidence Until now, all discussions of the authenticity of the Book of Abraham have been based on the assumption that we have to deal with only two really important sources of infor- mation: the Book of Abraham and the papyri.1 Everyone, it would seem, has taken for granted that if we know what the papyri really say, we are in a position to pass judgment on the authenticity of the Book of Abraham—a proposition dili- gently cultivated by some who have assumed that a knowl- edge of Egyptian qualifies one to pass judgment on matters that lie completely outside the field. SIR LEONARD WOOLLEY Charles Leonard Woolley, who died on 20th February, 1960, nearly eighty years old, had not only a diversity of archaeological experience unequalled in his generation, but also gifts that helped to make his opportunities and turned them to unique account. After he had had a short museum experience in Oxford, the pattern of his life was quickly set by some minor explorations in Nubia : he was to be the field-archaeologist, not the academic scholar, still less the teacher. Three sites in the Near East were the scenes of Woolley's most memorable achievements. Two of these, Ur and Carchemish, had already been identified and partly worked ; the third, 'Atshanah, was his own discovery. Its neighbourhood abounds in ancient mounds, and Woolley's choice of one among them all was brilliantly justified when it proved to be Alalakh, a place of no little note in the international politics of the later second millennium B.C. Carchemish gave him his introduction to the Near East and yielded to his work a series of late Hittite sculptures and inscriptions and the most comprehensive plan of the city's fortifications. But his most famous discoveries were made in thirteen seasons at the ancient city of Ur in Southern Iraq.

    REVOLUTIONIZING REVOLUTIONIZING Mark Altaweel and Andrea Squitieri and Andrea Mark Altaweel From Small States to Universalism in the Pre-Islamic Near East This book investigates the long-term continuity of large-scale states and empires, and its effect on the Near East’s social fabric, including the fundamental changes that occurred to major social institutions. Its geographical coverage spans, from east to west, modern- day Libya and Egypt to Central Asia, and from north to south, Anatolia to southern Arabia, incorporating modern-day Oman and Yemen. Its temporal coverage spans from the late eighth century BCE to the seventh century CE during the rise of Islam and collapse of the Sasanian Empire. The authors argue that the persistence of large states and empires starting in the eighth/ seventh centuries BCE, which continued for many centuries, led to new socio-political structures and institutions emerging in the Near East. The primary processes that enabled this emergence were large-scale and long-distance movements, or population migrations. These patterns of social developments are analysed under different aspects: settlement patterns, urban structure, material culture, trade, governance, language spread and religion, all pointing at population movement as the main catalyst for social change. This book’s argument Mark Altaweel is framed within a larger theoretical framework termed as ‘universalism’, a theory that explains WORLD A many of the social transformations that happened to societies in the Near East, starting from Andrea Squitieri the Neo-Assyrian period and continuing for centuries.
