This article gives a comprehensive account of the prominent results obtained from two season excavations. The occurrence of elaborate brick structures, channels, paved brick floors associated with grooved roof tiles, terracotta ring wells in association with roulette ware and inscribed Tamil – Brahmi pot sherds is a rare phenomenon in the early historic phase of Tamil Nadu. The absolute dating (AMS) of the site to some extent coincides with the general perception of the so‐called Sangam period. Keywords: Keeladi, Early Historic, Excavation, Structures, Rouletted Ware, Tamil Brahmi, Ring Well Introduction The multi‐faceted antiquarian remains of Tamil Nadu occupy a place of its own in the archaeological map of India. It was indeed Tamil Nadu that put a firm base for the beginning of archaeological research in India especially prehistoric archaeology with the discovery of the first stone tool at Pallavaram near Madras by Sir Robert Bruce Foote in 1863. Ever since this discovery, Tamil Nadu witnessed many strides in the field of archaeological research carried out by various organizations including Archaeological Survey of India till date.

He suggested we use our time to visit the Samanar Malai. Samanar means Jain in Tamil. It is derived from the Sanskrit shramana, which refers to all hermits, not just Jains, or more specifically those who prefer meditation and austerities to Vedic rituals in all matters spiritual. Malai is Tamil for hill. The Samanar stands in the village of Keezh Kuyil Kudi, just 15km outside Madurai, and my friend’s suggestion seemed like a perfect detour. So, after a quick lunch, we drove out of the city. Little did I know that going up and down this hill of hermits would be a journey through 2,500 years of Jain history. Placing it in syllabus: Indus Valley Civilisation(IVC) Dimensions: Excavations and findings at Keezdi in Tamil Nadu Link of Keezdi with Indus valley civilisation and early Sangam literature Genetic studies on Indus valley people at Rakhigarhi Content: Excavations and findings at Keezdi in Tamil Nadu: In 2013-14, the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) carried out explorations in 293 sites along the Vaigai river valley in Theni, Dindigul, Madurai, Keezhadi of Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts. The artefacts unearthed by the ASI at Keezhadi pointed to an ancient civilisation that thrived on the banks of the Vaigai. Carbon dating of charcoal found that the settlement there belonged to 200 BC, thus proved that urban civilisation had existed in Tamil Nadu since the Sangam age. Findings from different excavations: Ring wells made of terracotta, which is an indicator of the advanced water conservation technology of that period. Jewellery, fine game stones, semi-precious stones and a dozen Tamil Brahmi inscriptions. Beads of agate, Carnelian and quartz which indicate that they had trade links with countries like Rome.

    CHAPTER - I CHAPTER – I EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The TNRTP conducted a District Diagnostic Study (DDS) with an in depth evaluation of the district for identifying the sectors, Subsectors and commodities. The DDS encompasses different project components of rural Eco-system development, Enterprise business plan financing, Skills and job opportunities and project. The study has been conducted with the perspective of the entrepreneur as the focus and seeing the things through the lens of the entrepreneur towards assisting the different project beneficiaries- Producer Groups, Enterprise Groups and Individual Enterprises. The study would help the project team in effective implementation of the scheme as well as in prioritization and proper execution of activities. The study has identified the sectors, sub-sectors, commodities and potential Enterprises, which are summarized as follows. Agro Business activities/Commodities: 22 activities Non-Farm based activities/Commodities: 18 activities Service Sector/Commodities: 9 activities Service Sector- Non-Agro based activities/Commodities: 32 activities Trading- Agro based and Non-Agro based activities: 10 activities Further based on the inherent facilitating factor and opportunities existing, potential enterprise clusters have been identified and documented for each Block of the district, for the entire 12 Blocks. But that’s not all there is to it. Matching the artistic and cultural fervour, trade activities were also at an all-time high during the Sangam age. Building up on their strengths, the Tamils ventured into lands far and wide, establishing trading associations in foreign countries, some of which till date retain imprints of their existence. Coupled with manifest cultural similarities, archaeological and inscriptional evidence add on to the credibility of Sangam literature by making a strong case for the existence of an extensive trade between Tamilakam and the rest of the Old World. Sangam Literature: Valuable source of Information on Trade Pattinappalai, one of the poems (301 lines in ‘Vanji’ meter and Asiriyapa/Akaval meter) in Pattuppāṭṭu which is a corpus of ten poems, talks in great detail about Kaveripoompattinam, the capital city of the Early Cholas. Even though only half of what is claimed to have been created remains, the Sangam literature is too big a chunk to be thoroughly studied in a short time. There might still be parts of it that are waiting to be looked into.
