Red Brush Road • Newburgh, IN 47630 From the Pastor’s Desk 2 Dear Parishioners, Last Sunday, October 15, Pope Francis canonized 35 new saints. These 35 are called the "Martyrs of Natal," Brazil. This group consists of 30 priests, laymen and children who were killed in 1645 during a wave of anti-Catholic persecution; and the "Child Martyrs of Tlaxcala," who were three children who were among Mexico's first native converts killed for refusing to renounce the faith; and St. Angelo da Acri, an Italian Sunday Readings Capuchin priest known for his defense of the poor, and St. Faustino Miguez, a Spanish priest who started an advanced school for girls at a October 22, 2017 time when such education was limited almost exclusively to boys. The views expressed here are those of the author(s). Opening the Fifth Seal Catholic Martyrs and Forces of Religious Competition Rachel M. McCleary and Robert J. Barro Jorge Mario Bergoglio, since becoming Pope Francis in March 2013, is focusing on martyrdom in the Roman Catholic Church. Two months into his pontificate, Francis canonized the 813 martyrs of Otranto, the largest such group in recorded Catholic Church history. Five months later, Francis beatified another large group, 499 martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. Francis continues to emphasize martyrs over confessors, the name given to blessed persons who died of natural causes. In 2019, Francis beatified 39 martyrs and only 6 confessors. As a snapshot of what is happening, within the last four years, 14 persons who died in Guatemala have qualified as blessed martyrs; six were foreign missionaries who served in Guatemala and eight were national lay persons, including one child.1 The missionaries were Oklahoma priest Stanley Rother, the first U.S. born martyr beatified by the Catholic Church, three Missionaries of the Sacred Heart priests, a priest of the Order of Friars Minor, and James Miller, of the De La Salle Brothers of the Christian Schools and the last Vatican beatification for 2019.

Fonseca-Martinez, S.T.D. Director: John Grabowski, Ph.D. Karol Wojtyla/John Paul II reinvigorated Catholic education anthropologically and theologically. He encouraged Catholic schools, as a privileged place for Catholic education, to provide a solid Catholic moral foundation for their students. This dissertation explores his key ideas on Catholic education both before and after Wojtyla’s elevation to the papacy. His teachings in this area are relevant to Nicaraguan Catholic schools to reinforce their current educational programs. Methodologically, this study focuses on the moral values of responsibility, justice and solidarity, highlighted by Pope John Paul II to the Church of Nicaragua. It then uses these values to analyze samples of the moral curricula of three religious communities used in Nicaraguan Catholic secondary schools in terms of their similarities to John Paul II’s teaching on Catholic education. The study begins by analyzing the current moral reality of Nicaragua in which young people are immersed. The second chapter provides key concepts articulated by John Paul II through which he enriched the concept of the human person and on which he fundamentally based his moral theology.
