WILLIAMSON RE: CATHOLIC LEAGUE FOR RELIGIOUS AND CIVIL RIGHTS I am prompted to forward this both to you as a result of our r -.I recent luncheon meeting on blue collar workers coupled with materials I have received from Bill Gavin. As you know, Bill, who was a former speech writer to President Nixon and currently a Special Assistant to House Republican Leader Bob Michel, gave invaluable help to us on the campaign as a speech writer. He was particularly good at drafting language to address the ethnic Catholic group. Bill is very active in the Catholic community. His book, "A Street Corner Conservative", is probably the best written about the Conservative Catholic crossover vote. He strongly urges us to have Father Virgil Blum meet with the President on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights on May 14, 1983. Apparently Father Blum will be in Washington at that time. Enclosed are materials I have received from Bill of this event. Based on my review of the material and my high regard for Bill, I strongly urge us to place it on the schedule. ✓ cc: James A. (MAY ( '-l 1 (q-?3) Reaso~t it would be good for the President to do so: 1. While the League has m~~y clergymen as members it has no official connection with the "official" Church bureaucray. Thus, tae League represents the kind of volunteer, grass-roots, private initiative the President likes. 2. The League is p~imarily a civil rights group .This is an important fact. Like the Anti:-De.famation League of B'nai Brith, it stands up for the rights of its co-religionist~But equally important it has stood up against bigotry directed ·at non~Catholics as well. Meeting with Father Blum would give the White House a chance to speak out against all bigotry and give the President a chance to set the record straight. 3.The Leage is ~champion of tuition tax credits--and stresses the benefits to minority children(they have do~a a study on this). 4. The league has done ayine job in setting the record straight on news stories about the abortion contfOversy. 5.Finally, the League is made up of "street-co~r Catholics"(like the present writer as we say) ... the kind President Reagan has counted on in 1 the past.     Minister apologizes to Catholics; some question if politics behind it WASHINGTON – After the Rev. John Hagee, a San Antonio televangelist, sent a letter to the head of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights apologizing for any comments he made “that Catholics have found hurtful,” the league’s president, William Donohue, said that “the case is closed.” Other Catholic leaders said the gesture toward reconciliation should be graciously accepted but that there was a ring of partisan political maneuvering to the publicity about Rev. Hagee’s anti-Catholic rhetoric and the apology. The words of the minister, the pastor of the Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, became an issue because of his endorsement of a presidential candidate. Richard R. Gaillardetz, professor of Catholic studies at the University of Toledo in Ohio, said while Rev. Hagee’s May 12 letter “goes beyond the garden variety ‘I’m sorry if someone was offended’ apology,” the way the controversy has played out seems to have political motivations in addition to concern for decrying anti- Catholicism. When presumptive Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain received a highly publicized endorsement by Rev. Hagee, Mr. Donohue blasted the Arizona senator for seeking the support of someone who “has waged an unrelenting war against the Catholic Church.” “For example, he likes calling it ‘the great whore,’ an ‘apostate church,’ the ‘Antichrist,’ and a ‘false cult system,’“ said Mr. Donohue in a Feb. 28 press release. This celebrated adaptation of Henry James’s The Turn of the Screw (1898) was scripted by William Archibald (whose play of the book had been on Broadway) and Truman Capote, with additional scenes and dialogue by John Mortimer. A brilliant exercise in psychological horror, The Innocents tells of an impressionable and repressed governess, Miss Giddens (Deborah Kerr), who agrees to tutor two orphaned children, Miles (Martin Stephens) and Flora (Pamela Franklin). On arrival at Bly House, she becomes convinced that the children are possessed by the perverse spirits of former governess Miss Jessel (Clytie Jessop) and her Heathcliff­like lover Quint (Peter Wyngarde), who both met with mysterious deaths. The sinister atmosphere of The Innocents is carefully created – not through shocK tactics – but through its cinematography, soundtrack, and decor: Freddie Francis’ beautiful CinemaScope photography, with its eerily indistinct long shots and mysterious manifestations at the edges of the frame; Georges Auric’s eVocative and spooky soundtrack; and the grand yet decaying Bly House, with spiders crawling from dilapidated statues, ants from the eyes of dolls, and rooms coVered in dust sheets.

(2) With the exception of outfits like the League, RC's tend to take abuse lying down. Their reasons for doing so derive from a long and complicated sociology, but it remains the case that little attention is paid to anti-Catholic libels. (3) Much the same can be said about the snide and casual canards leveled at Protestant fundamentalists -- how fashionable it is, e.g., for a President of Yale to attack Falwell and Co. as if they were preparing thumbscrews and racks for non-believers. (4) Nevertheless, anti-Catholic and anti-fundamentalist attacks are offensive not only to the targets but to the principle of religious tolerance which lies at the heart of our institutions. Such prejudice should be treated in the same manner as anti-Semitic and anti-black prejudice. (5) All of which leads up to a proposal to which I'd like your reactions: why not have the President deliver a major address on religious and racial bigotry in the U.S.? He would begin by invoking Jeffers~n and Lincoln on the meaning of the Declaration, thence to a brief history of racial and religious bigotry in the U.S.

From the shooting down of the Malaysian airliner in Ukraine, beheading of Western journalists and aid workers in Syria, murder of Christians in Iraq, and abduction of children as soldiers and sex slaves in the Congo-the headlines are filled with the flouting of international humanitarian law. That law is meant to protect non-combatants from the scourge of war. This essay tells the story of one of those disregarded principles: the prohibition against rape. The story is about why renewed efforts to get warring nations to obey the law could be brought down by a parallel movement to get Western nations to redefine it with a right to abortion.
