  • Arhai's Balkan Folktronica: Serbian Ethno Music Reimagined for British
Ivana Medić Arhai’s Balkan Folktronica... DOI: 10.2298/MUZ1416105M UDK: 78.031.4 78.071.1:929 Бацковић Ј. Arhai’s Balkan Folktronica: Serbian Ethno Music Reimagined for British Market* Ivana Medić1 Institute of Musicology SASA (Belgrade) Abstract This article focuses on Serbian composer Jovana Backović and her band/project Arhai, founded in Belgrade in 1998. The central argument is that Arhai made a transition from being regarded a part of the Serbian ethno music scene (which flourished during the 1990s and 2000s) to becoming a part of the global world music scene, after Jovana Backović moved from her native Serbia to the United Kingdom to pursue an international career. This move did not imply a fundamental change of her musical style, but a change of cultural context and market conditions that, in turn, affected her cultural identity. Keywords Arhai, Jovana Backović, world music, ethno, Balkan Folktronica Although Serbian composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Jovana Backović is only 34 years old, the band Arhai can already be considered her lifetime project. The Greek word ‘Arhai’ meaning ‘beginning’ or ‘ancient’ it is aptly chosen to summarise Backović’s artistic mission: rethinking tradition in contemporary context. Нer interest in traditional music was sparked by her father, himself a professional musician and performer of both traditional and popular folk music (Medić 2013). Backović founded Arhai in Belgrade in 1998, while still a pupil at music school Slavenski, and continued to perform with the band while receiving instruction in classical composition and orchestration at the Belgrade Faculty of Music. In its first, Belgrade ‘incarnation’, Arhai was a ten-piece band that developed a fusion of traditional music from the Balkans with am bient sounds and jazz-influenced improvisation, using both acoustic and electric instruments and a quartet of fe male vocalists.

  • Quotations of the Middle Ages in the Music of the 'Gothic' Movement. an Analytical Survey
163 Quotations of the Middle Ages in the music of the ‘Gothic’ movement. An analytical survey Dra. Elena Previdi University of Pavia Abstract The article deals with bands making the “Ethereal” type of music and their use of quotations of the Middle Ages. The first example is the track Il bagatto(2000) by Ataraxia. The primary source for Atarax- ia’s music is a French dance published in 1530 which, in turn, reveals harmonic connections with an Italian one published in 1578. The two ancient dances, French and Italian, seem to have been conceived as separate developments from a common archaic tune. The Italian one was used in the Seventies by Angelo Branduardi, who added a text taken from the famous fresco of Pinzolo portraying the “danse macabre” (1539). Considering that the lyrics of Ataraxia’s Il bagatto show strong connections with Branduardi’s ones, we could say that the general network of ancient-modern references reveals its intrigu- ing circular shape. The second example is the Troubadour song Reis glorios (12th centu- ry), put into music by Ordo Equitum Solis (1992) and Estampie (2000). Ordo Equitum Solis’ version shows characteristics that are typical of the philological ensembles: among the others, the efforts to follow the inner rhythm of the words and the renounce to any chordal sup- port. Estampie’s version, on the contrary, aims to change the ancient tune into a sort of “pop song”, in the attempt to trap the text into a constant rhythm and to put it into a precise harmonic structure. To end, the common background of these bands shows how this kind of quotations can be traced back to the period following the produc- tion of Dead Can Dance in the years 1987-1990.

Lucy Winnington’s essay discusses the ‘haunted land’ in the photography of New Zealand, marking the journal’s first submission on NZ Gothic. Laurie Ringer’s article “With Teeth” takes a Deleuzian reading of A L Kennedy alongside paintings of the martyred St. Apollonia. Debra Van Tuyll and Carl Purdy’s piece (our first collaborative essay here at Dark Arts) looks for the uncanny in Irish folk music. Finally, Will Connor explores experimental Gothic music and performance. As always, this issue couldn’t have happened without the help of our reviewers and advisors, who give the journal the ‘bite’ of rigorous scholarship. Lisa also received an Oscar nomination for ‘Gladiator’ along with two further Golden Globe Award nominations for her scores to ‘Ali’ and ‘The Insider’. Lisa’s film work also includes ‘Whale Rider’, a feature which received an Academy Award nomination and garnered Lisa an international award for the score. Her musical journey began in the early 1980s when she and fellow Australian Brendan Perry formed duo ‘Dead Can Dance’. In 2012 the band reunited for a sell-out world tour. With nine albums released between 1984 and 1995, the duo's musical canvas expanded with each release to take in a timeless mix of world-music influences, medieval chants, folk ballads, baroque stylings, Celtic flavours, electronics, samples and anything else that took their fancy. Several solo and collaborative albums were well received and Lisa made a natural progression to composing for films.

  • The New Soul of an Old Machine | 80S Essentials, Industrial Revolution
80s Essentials, Industrial Revolution [Because the decade was a formative time for so much more than just our beloved heavy metal, today we're pleased to present you with a look at fifteen essential industrial albums from the 1980s.] I’m neither historian nor sociologist enough to speak to the politico- economic milieu that shaped industrial music’s formative clatterings, but a few general observations may suffice. The advanced industrial world was hardly being ground in the same way as by the ravenous gears of the late- eighteenth/early-nineteenth century Industrial Revolution (cf. Friedrich Engels on The Condition of the Working Class in England), but the 1970s and ‘80s saw an increasingly aggressive attack on the social welfare state that had so flourished in the three or four decades since the end of World War II. The elections of Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, and Helmut Kohl (in Britain, the U.S., and West Germany, respectively) ushered in an era of neoliberal government retrenchment that would largely define the domestic political debate in the years to follow, while throwing the (often uneasy) balance between capital and labor into disrepair throughout the rich world. Reagan’s tough-talking rhetoric meant that many of the signs of rapprochement and detente that had offered brief glimmers of, if not hope, then perhaps bleakly muted optimism in the 1970s gave way to a renewed era of Cold War stridency and military hand-wringing. In many ways, then, the same social, political, economic, and cultural context that led to the development of punk’s disaffected worldview and heavy metal’s increasingly doom-saying weightiness would also provide grist for the eternally wending mill of nascent musical experimentalism that gradually coalesced into industrial music.
