Henry Director of Athletics It might be considered somewhat ironic that James J. Henry should be Director of Athletics at LaSalle College, a school that has not had a football team since 1941, for football has played a great part in Jim Henry's life. Before being graduated from Villanova in 1930, Henry received All-American honorable mention as end, and when he came to La Salle in 1930 he was soon named line coach, then head coach in 1940 and 1941. This year, he is president of the Eastern Intercollegiate Football Officials Association, and still offi- ciates many of the nation's top grid contests, .i.e_., Navy-Notre Dame, Princeton-Harvard, Army-Navy. Football, however, is only part of the story of Jim Henry, for he is a man devoted not merely to a single sport, but to athletics and what college athletics stand for. In his 31 years at La Salle, he has given of his time and energy equally for all sports; he coached the 1931 Explorer basketball team to a 15-4 record and started La Salle's crew, the first Catholic college crew in the nation. He also serves on the executive committee of the Middle Atlantic States Athletic Conference. La Salle's athletic director since 1934, Henry received the honorary degree of doctor of law from the college in 1955 and is now professor of Finance on the faculty. He and his wife haVe four adult children, one of whom is a member of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the teaching order that conducts La S a lle. ' 6. Donald W. "Dudey" Moore Head Basketball Coach In ten years of outstanding coaching at Duquesne University, his alma inater (Class of '34), Coach Moore racked- up a 191-70 won- lost record, produced seven tournament teams, and developed three Ail-Americans — Chuck Cooper, Sihugo Green, and Dick Ricketts. In his initial two seasons at La Salle, "Dudey" has posted an impressive 33 won, 13 lost record, bringing his life- time record to 223 won, 83 lost — an amazing .729 percentage that places him 13th among the nations major college basket- ball coaches. A star guard on Duquesne ' s legendary "Iron Dukes" from 1930 to 1934, Moore was a "work-horse' — missing only one game in four years — and a key member of the Chick Davies- coached squad that compiled a 23-game victory skein in 1933-34. Twice (1952 and 1954) named college Coach of the Year by United Press (International), Coach Moore has had only one losing season in 26 years of high school and college coaching. At Duquesne, his "Dukes' squads won the N.I.T. title in 1955, the Holiday Festival laurels in 1953 and 1954 , and racked-up winning streaks of 16 (1950), 18 (1952), and 22 (1954) Last year signed to a four-year La Salle contract, Moore has on several occasions been named coach of the Ail- American team. He was the New York Basketball Writer's "Coach of the Year' in 1952 and was voted by the Philadelphia Basketball Writer's "Coach of the Year" (1955). He, his wife, and two children — son Donald is a junior at La Salle — live in suburban Meadowbrook. -30- 7. PROSPECTS FOR TKE SEASON By Head Coach Donald W. (Dudey) Moore It is unwise to ask a coach about his prospects for the coming season, for you inevitably receive a lot of doubletalk. When he has a good, tall, veteran team returning and everyone ex- pects a great year, he must try to curb overconf idence . He will point out weaknesses — real or imagined — to try to remove the pressure from the team and himself. When prospects are dim, he doesn't like to be too pessimistic or he will discourage his team before the season starts. All of this is part of coaching and you must forgive the poor, harassed mentor who often doesn't dare to be outspoken. It is foolhardy to predict great seasons, and disasterous to say we won't win a game. I can hear the reader by this time saying, "Yes, yes, but what about La Salle's 1960-61 basketball team?" But, remember, I warned you about doubletalk! We, of course, can't be optimistic. We have had heavy losses and limited replacements. We will be lacking in the two primeelements of a successful basketball team -- height and ex- perience. This isn't a pessimistic outlook merely a realistic one. ( More ) 8, 1st Add — Prospects for the Season We could stop there and get out the crying towel, but let's look a little closer and see if there isn't some silver lining. In junior Bobby McAteer, our 6 ft. captain, who played some great ball in his sophomore year, we have a solid backcourt performer. He can hit from outside, drive well and make the plays Bobby will take charge with poise and confidence. George Friedrich, our 6-5 junior center, gained a lot of experience last season and gave us some good defensive re- bounding.
