I have wanted to find ways of writing ethically so as to avoid objectifying people and appropriating their words, their life stories. I find ways of writing in which the values and practices of a collaborative, dialogical and reflexive ways of being with people are echoed in the texts. I show how writing and reading are relational practices in that I speak with the participants in the texts as well as with the reader and also with other writers. To do this, I experiment with a variety of written forms and employ literary devices so as to speak from within a range of practice relationships, from within inner dialogue, with real and fictitious characters. Technically and ethically, I try to write in a way which not only captures the sound of talk but which also speaks with the reader who would be reading, and perhaps hearing these accounts of conversation. By sharing a rich level of detail from my polyvocal inner dialogue, I invite the reader into a unique and privileged alongside position as a participant-observer in my work. Inspirational research methodologies include: writing as a method of inquiry, reflexivity, autoethnography, performance ethnography and transgression interpreted by many areas of systemic theory and practice. To support this innovative work, I offer several theoretical and practical papers offering novel developments on systemic practice theory. I situate systemic practice as a research method and demonstrate many family resemblances between systemic inquiry and qualitative inquiry. I offer a reflexive model for systemic practice and practice research which I call Praction Research which regards therapy and research as political acts requiring an activist agenda. Linked to this I politicise ideas of reflexivity by introducing local and global reflexivity and create a political connection with a concept of theorethical choices in theory and ethics in practice research. I propose a new form of ethnography suited to systemic practice, Relational Ethnography in which I draw attention to reflexive relationships between writer and readers, between the voices of inner and outer dialogue in research texts. He said that a few times over the first couple of years as if he was determined not to pre-empt any one structure which would narrow the definition of what might count as form or content of such a doctorate. I was struck by the openness of this invitation, the preparedness to just go forwards without a pre-pared path and see what would emerge. This trust, this hope has helped me to create a body of work which echoes some of the rule-creating, contextually responsive and playful discursive practices within systemic practice relationships. I am truly grateful for this opportunity and for the vision of Peter Lang in making this programme happen. When I first attended the series of seminars by John Shotter on Dialogically Situated Action Research at the Kensington Consultation Centre in 2005, I could not grasp the meaning of any of the texts we read and discussed. Not one. Really. But I experienced a feeling of paradigmatic vertigo and excitement, as if I was standing on the edge of something new, something important. John Shotter has played such an important role in steering this doctorate with his generous provision of his writings, his time, his introducing of other authors and in his writing for research students in his book, Getting It. My relationship with ‘the writings of John Shotter’ go back further than that. His work on social accountability and the construction of ‘you’ was theory which changed my ways of seeing and being very deeply during my therapy training in the early nineties and during my masters research and beyond. I have very much appreciated the creative and inspiring conversations with Professor Ravi Kohli at the University of Bedfordshire who has done much to make this research process enjoyable. Thanks to Martin Little and the staff of the Kensington Consultation Centre for supporting the innovative community of learning and practice conversations for as long as it was possible to do so. I owe much of my motivation for this body of work directly and indirectly to the people with whom I have the opportunity for many varied conversations through the practices of therapy, supervision and teaching. I want to express a heartfelt thanks to so many people: people coming for therapy, students of counselling and counselling research, supervisees and colleagues. I have also been reflecting on the opportunities afforded to me over the years by those who were kind enough to invite me or allow me to contribute to books and journals.
