2011 Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar 2011 TOSRV Turns 50 There are many rides, but only one is Americas bicycle touring classic The Tour of the Scioto River Valley, better known by its acronym, TOSRV. Say TOSRV to bicycle riders around the nation, and they’ll know you mean this event, which began as a fatherandson outing in 1962 before quickly growing into the nation’s largest bicycle touring weekend. In fact, TOSRV singlehandedly raised the pro le of the bicycle in American life and was the inspiration for many of the massparticipation cycling events so popular today across the country. TOSRV riders have come from across the country and have ranged in age from two to 93. This year’s TOSRV, scheduled for May 7 – 8, 2011 is expected to draw about 3,000 riders for the 50th edition of this classic event. Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar Get out and ride! hio bicyclists have a splendid array of organized events to enjoy every year. The Ohio Bicycle Federa tion is pleased to help get the word out and encourage cyclists of every interest and every skill level Oto get out and ride! Here are some hints on how to get the most out of this Calendar and make your 2011 riding season great: Get current details —don’t just show up at last year’s place and time— organizers’ plans can and do change, or there may be an error in our listing! Look ahead: some events have entry dead lines weeks in advance of ride dates. Increasingly event listings o er Web site addresses where additional information can be found along with downloadable entry forms or online registration for immediate grati fi cation. If requesting information by mail, be sure and send a selfaddressed, stamped businesssized (#10) envelope to the address given. If you don’t send a SASE with your request, don’t expect a reply! Check the Web version of this Calendar at: www.OhioCycling.info for updates and corrections as the season progresses! Finally, consider subscribing and participating in our free Ohio rides email discussion list — details available at OhioCycling.info! Supporting Rides — A special category of events listed in this Calendar are those that have pledged to donate $1 per rider toward the publication of the OBF’s Ohio Bicycle Events Calendar . Look for the special symbol (seen here) and color designating these events. Support the rides that help support this Calendar! Tours are noncompetitive group rides for cyclists of various ages and abilities. Tour organizers (usually bicycle clubs) normally charge a modest fee to cover services provided. Fullservice tours, for example, typi cally o er a map, food stops, and road (“sag”) assistance. Fundraisers may have higher entry fees to provide income for their causes. Budget tours and free rides usually o er few, if any, services. “Bikeathons” or pledge rides may or may not be operated in a liation with a bicycle organization and raise money primarily through pledges of donations per mile each rider completes and may have a minimum pledge amount and entry fee. Races are competitive events of various sorts. Multisport and BMX events are not listed in this Calendar. Sanctioned races are governed by the rules of a sanctioning body such as USA Cycling/USCF, American Bi cycle Racing (ABR), or the National O Road Bicycling Association (NORBA). Those who wish to compete in sanctioned races must have racing licenses issued by the appropriate governing body; raceday licensing may be available. Citizen races are usually open to all comers (within age restrictions) and are a good way to give racing a try.
