Beetles from a typical ancient Chiltern beechwood R Fortey (RF), R Booth (RB), M Barclay (MB) and M Geiser (MG) published online February 2019 Summary Lambridge Wood on the edge of Henley-on-Thames is an ancient, semi-natural woodland typical of many Chiltern beechwoods. It has a well-documented history that was described in The Wood for the Trees (Fortey 2016) proving its ancient pedigree, and that it was a ‘working woodland’ until the middle of the last century, since when it has had minimal management. Over five years the beetle fauna of part of the wood has been sampled, including the canopy, up to 253 species were found, which were identified in the Natural History Museum, London. Of this total, about 20% are local or Notable, and most of these are associated with ancient woodlands, including saproxylic species. Notes are given on some of these taxa. Species collected from identified fungi are discussed in more detail. This ‘snapshot’ may serve as a benchmark to help monitor future changes in this special habitat. Introduction Figure 1. Beech woodland is particularly characteristic of high ground on the southern part of the Chiltern Hills. During the nineteenth and early twentieth century these beech stands were associated with a chair manufacturing industry centred on High 48 Wycombe, Bucks. In South Oxfordshire, the area west of Henley-on-Thames has a wealth of such beech woods, one of which, Lambridge Wood, is the subject of this report. -

Hibbett, and Greta Goranova Abstract: The new genus Neocampanella (Agaricales, Agaricomycetes, Basidiomycota) is established for Dentocorticium blastanos Boidin & Gilles, a crustose species, and the new combination, Neocampanella blastanos, is proposed. Morpho logical and molecular studies support the recognition of the new genus and its close ties to Campanella, a pleurotoid aga ric. The recently described Brunneocorticium is a monotypic, corticioid genus closely related to Campanella also. Brunneocorticium pyrifonne S.H. Wu is conspecific with Dendrothele bispora Burds. & Nakasone, and the new combina tion, Brunneocorticium bisporum, is proposed. Phylogenetic studies have included the family in Agaricales, grouping many traditionally and recently described genera of saprotrophic or parasitic mushroom-producing fungi. However, some genera in Omphalotaceae have not reached a stable concept that reflects monophyletic groups with identifiable morphological circumscription. This is the case of Gymnopus and Marasmiellus, which have been the target of two opposing views: (1) a more inclusive Gymnopus encompassing Marasmiellus, or (2) a more restricted Gymnopus (s. str.) while Marasmiellus remains a distict genus; both genera still await a more conclusive phylogenetic hypothesis coupled with morphological recognition. Furthermore, some new genera or undefined clades need more study. In the present paper, a phylogenetic study was conducted based on nrITS and nrLSU in single and multilocus analyses including members of the Omphalotaceae, more specifically of the genera belonging to the /letinuloid clade. The resulting trees support the view of a more restricted Gymnopus and a distinct Marasmiellus based on monophyletic and strongly supported clades on which their morphological circumscriptions and taxonomic treatments are proposed herein. -

MushRumors The Newsletter of the Northwest Mushroomers Association Volume 27, Issue 4 October - December 2016 A Most Unusual Year For Mushrooms in Northwest Washington, Highlighted by the Annual Fall Exhibit In a year which saw extensive fruitings of a wide range of fall mushrooms in the first week of summer, Photo by Jack Waytz the oddities were only just beginning. As a result of three consecutive years of extended hot, dry periods during the summer months, even after conditions became ideal with copious rains in late September and early October, there was a marked scarcity of many of the usual mycorrhizal suspects in the various woodland habitats of our area. These unusual circumstances underscore the importance of the health and well-being of the host trees in the symbiosis that exists between these trees and their mycorrhizal mushroom partners. Half of a 25 pound haul of lobster mushrooms, found Saprophytes, however, were undeterred, and after the unbelievably, on July 7th. rains began, they emerged in both abundance and diversity, and proved to be the stars of the Northwest Mushroomers Photo by Jack Waytz Association Annual Fall Wild Mushroom Show, to the astounding tune of over 300 species! Photo by Jack Waytz Among the most prevalent groups observed throughout the season, were the inky caps. There were prolonged and multiple fruitings of several species normally found in our area, but not in the numbers found Over 3 pounds of perfect chanterelles, and two perfect this year. At leat one species Russula xerampelina buttons, also found on July 7th on previously undescribed a local small mountain. -

Their gentle call brought average attendance but all who came got an eyeful of the beautiful fungal world here in the Pacific Northwest. NMA fulfilled its mission of bringing the world of mushrooms to all interested. And this year the process was smooth and nicely done, start to finish! This year’s drought--rain cycles brought dry conditions at show time, with fewer than usual Fun at the children’s table, with beautiful displays in the foreground. mushrooms and lots of what was showing already moldy. Halfway through Saturday evening’s initial sorting of mushrooms brought in to the Bloedel Donovan Pavilion, the selection looked bleak with several “genus” boxes still empty. Then Carol and Stas Bronisz appeared with two vehicles filled with the mushrooms they had been carefully gathering for the previous few days. Somehow they managed to find an incredible variety of mushrooms that had been eluding everyone else. NMA owes them a huge of thanks for filling inPhoto by Jack Waytz the blanks spots with beautifully gathered specimens. There were many expert and intermediate identifiers present at the Saturday sorting “to genus” and, with the smaller number of specimens, this process was finished much earlier than usual on Saturday.
