After opening up the season beating a strong University of the Pacifi c side, SJSU has fallen in a rut and are 1-4 in their last fi ve games including four straight losses. The team has struggled to score goals. The Spartan offense has been led by junior forward Jeremy Romero and senior attacking midfi elder Jonathan Colunga each with four points on the season. Others will need to step up as Western Athletic Conference play begins. SJSU has not just had problems scoring goals, but maintaining the lead when it does fi nd the back of the net. The team will rely on sophomore goalkeeper Nedin Tucakovic to return to his early season form. This weekend the team comes home for two of the fi nal three non-conference games on the schedule. Spartans begin quest for Mountain West supremacy

The women’s volleyball team has been a pleasent surprise so far this season. After fi nishing last season 13-18, the team already has picked up seven wins this year, more than half of last season’s total. With the non-conference schedule in the rear view mirror, the Spartans will need to continue their efforts into conference play. The conference is fi lled with several talented teams, none more talented than the Colorado State Rams. The Rams were ranked 25 nationally in the initial 2016 AP rankings. The teams will face off twice over the course of the season, starting this weekend in Fort Collins. This weekend, the Spartans will hit the road as the team travels to Laramie to play conference foe Wyoming before traveling to face the defending conference champion Rams. SJSU hasn’t played at Spartan Gym since the opening weekend of the season, but will return back next weekend as conference play continues.
