The Nature of Nahant: Open Spaces and Hidden Gems Across the Causeway or by Linda Pivacek Across the Country The Open Space Committee sponsored a series of Natural History field trips, over the Wayne Alarm Systems, Inc. past few months. The trips are free and open to all. We visited several of Nahant’s “Open Spaces” and explored the beginnings of Nahant’s new Nature Trail. Certified Co. MA Lic. C1111 APPROVED A summer field trip to Lodge Park was a slow saunter, as we explored many nooks and crannies. John Benson and Cherry Fitch identified several special plants, that have thrived there for years, and the new wild plants, that are thriving in the meadow. The songs of the FLOOD & FIRE FLOODED? nesting Cedar Waxwings, Yellow Warblers and Carolina Wrens made the day even sunnier. Short Beach is one of the least disturbed beaches where these birds can rest and feed and is vital to their survival. It is interesting to contemplate how lovely and delicate, both the plants and birds appear, yet how “tough” they have to be to survive. I’d like to add a note about Short Beach and its marvelous shorebirds. I conduct shorebird counts at Short Beach, for the International Shorebird Survey, a Pan-American Punch-List Service Co. organization. Since the birds are depleted of fat stores and energy when they reach Nahant, it is important for them to feed and rest with minimal disturbance. Many will not survive the General Household migration. Part of the survey is to record how often the flock is disturbed. I have been Repair & Maintenance greatly impressed with the consideration so many of Nahant’s beachgoers intuitively give to Prompt & Reliable the shorebirds, making an effort to avoid disturbing them. I have had many folks stop and ask what I’m doing, as I watch the flocks through my telescope. I see a new awareness and respect as my answers provoke further questions. I hope the beach holds even more wonder All tasks considered. than it did before for these folks. George Wright On a sparkling day in early October, we visited Bailey’ s Hill and part of the new Nahant Owned (617) 257-6425 Nature Trail at the Lowlands. OSC member, Debbie Aliff, a close neighbor of Bailey’s Hill, pointed out how the vegetation has changed in the past few years. Other participants noted, that they had never visited the hill before and were impressed with how beautiful it was. Bailey’s Hill has certainly matured and grown in its beauty. The Pine Grove looked stately Keep the “free press” alive in Nahant. Subscribe to and the Crab Apple trees were in full fruit. From Bailey’s, we walked the proposed route of the Nahant Harbor Review. Please see pg 9 for info. Nahant’s new Nature Trail to the Lowlands. In contrast to the spectacular open vistas at Bailey’s, the Lowlands Trail is a hidden gem, verdant and intimate. One is surrounded by trees, without a building in sight. Another very special Nahant place. At this point, it is only a rough-cut, vague trail. As we walked through the “woods,” to the edge of the composting area, songbirds and wildflowers became more plentiful. There were Monarch Butterflies and Dragonflies. We spotted a Black and White Warbler, Palm Warbler and Swamp, Song and White-throated Sparrows and Indigo Buntings. I love this place. It is filled with life. Birds feast in the great weeds that remain untouched atop old compost piles. The sounds of crickets and other insects fill the air. Admittedly, it’s not for everyone. There is no landscaping here, just nature allowed to thrive. For now, at least. The Open Space Committee will be conducting more natural history field trips...stay tuned. What to look for in November

The Nature of Nahant is rich throughout the calendar year. In November, the south- ward migration of many landbirds, Monarch butterflies, dragonflies and even ocean fish will be winding down. The thickets that were alive with warblers and sparrows will be quiet. But our feeders will host our hardy resident, non-migratory species such as Cardinals, Chicka- dees, Sparrows, and Woodpeckers. The Mockingbirds and Carolina Wrens will look for berries in our gardens. We will soon see hundreds of waterfowl gathering along our shores as they return from northern breeding sites - Eider, Bufflehead, Scoters, Scaup, Ruddy Ducks, Red-breasted Mergansers and Loons. Nahant’s flock of Brant Geese will arrive for the winter to graze on the eel grass at Black Rock Beach. Canada Geese and Snow Geese will be migrating south, calling to each other as they pass overhead. Days will be shorter, the air crisper, and the last of the fallen leaves will be raked. Time to think about holidays with friends and family. Happy Turkey! NAHANT HARBOR REVIEW • NOVEMBER 2004 • Page 14

Marriage is Like Riding an Elephant by Marlene McCauley

Recently when I attended a reception at the Nahant Country Club, I felt drawn back to 1982 when my husband Allan and I celebrated our 25th Anniversary called; “25 years...a Happy Circus.” The whole town of Nahant came out to view “Ruthie,” a 10,000 pound African elephant perform tricks on the grounds of the Nahant Country Club. Ruthie was the name of the elephant I rode for Ringling Brothers during 1957 - 1958. Ruthie was donned with an oriental rug and toenails of white polishg for the special event. She entertained everyone by standing on her head, rolling over and sitting up; tricks she did as mascot for the Tufts University football team. A reporter asked, “Why an elephant for your anniversary?” I answered, “Marriage is lijke riding an elephant. If you hold on tight, you’ll make it to center ring— and that means a loving relationship with God, your spouse and children. (We have six.) To that, my dear husband responded, “Nonsense, marriage is psychosis and (pointing to the elephant) this is all part of it!” This year, August 24th, Allan and I celebrated our 47th Anniversary. Three more years to go for the big 50th and perhaps, we’ll have a herd of elephants!
