This just in:

Steve Noyce is no longer the superintendent of the

Utah Schools for the Deaf and Blind. He was ousted by the Utah school board. No reason was given, but in

2009 he was appointed over the strong opposition of the Deaf Community. They felt he would suppress use of sign language in the school environment.

Dedication:

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Calvin Philip Hailey, a long time deaf teacher at North Carolina School for the deaf, who departed us. After retirement, he did just retire – he stayed at the school to help establish the NCSD Historical Museum

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to British deaf actor

Hal Draper, who departed us. There are number of notable deaf actors in Great Britain, and he was among the elite in the group.

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to Mervin Garretson, who departed us. He was a man with a long list of accomplishments in Deaf Education and in Deaf Politics.

Such accomplishments are too long to squeeze into this edition, but his most notable one was – stepping in as a last minute interim executive director of NAD during its darkest moment in 1989. NAD was broke, and he was forced to lay off 10 employees just to restore financial stability. Mission accomplished, he then he sailed off into a long deserving retirement.

DeafDigest dedicates this edition to John Bill Hudson, not deaf, who departed us. After a big time football career with University of Alabama and then a short time in the Canadian pros, he made Deaf Education his career – beginning at the Tennessee School for the deaf and then as superintendent at the South Dakota School for the Deaf and then at Kentucky School for the Deaf. Said a colleague:

He was a “behind the scenes” kind of Superintendent, preferring that mode of administration to high visibility

Top stories about the deaf:

Kentucky requiring special license plates for deaf drivers? This the issue going on right now in the state.

An outdoor hockey rink was built behind a home in

Newfoundland. The homeowner, a father of a deaf son, wants to invite teams and players to come and play – as a fundraiser to create awareness of deafness in the Newfoundland community.

McCormick & Schmick is a famous steak house chain. Are deaf employees in the chain being treated well? A deaf prep cook lost his job, despite his satisfactory evaluations. He filed a lawsuit with the U.S. Equal

Employment Opportunity Commission, saying the chain made life miserable for him. The EEOC ruled in his favor, awarding him $47,814, and at the same time ordering the chain to follow the ADA regs.

United States Senator Tom Harkin, Iowa, wants to replace the dollar bills with dollar coins. If he succeeds, then one group would benefit a lot from the change. It would be the deaf-blind; they would know, from the size, that it is a dollar coin as opposed to determining the denominations of paper bills.

Heather Whitestone, a deaf woman, who won the Miss America pageant, was cited in a web posting as a positive example for Alexis Wineman. An autistic, she won the Miss Montana pageant.

A DEAF CEO SHOCKED BY FIRING

This is a true story. DeafDigest will not mention who the person is or what agency it was.

A deaf CEO was not happy about a deaf employee. He and the deaf deputy CEO both agreed that the employee should be fired.

The CEO wanted to be careful with words to inform the employee that he was to be fired during a private meeting between CEO, deputy CEO and the employee.

During that private meeting, the CEO had to go to the restroom. When he came back, the employee was already fired by the deputy CEO (without CEO’s permission).

The CEO was angry about it and also fired deputy CEO!

HATING PAPER AND PEN

Do hearing people hate paper and pen while deaf people love paper and pen?

Often we go to a store, and tell the clerk you are deaf and you need to write something on paper.

You watch (and laugh) for few minutes as the hearing clerk runs all over, looking for a pen and a paper pad!

BOONTLING SIGN LANGUAGE – DEAD?

Is there such a thing as Boontling Sign Language.

(BSL)? Probably not, but there was a story that said the

Boontling langauge, spoken for 150 years, is dying out.

It is being spoken in Boonville, CA, a tiny town of

1,000 people just 2 hours drive north of San Francisco.

Why no BSL? If there were deaf children growing up in Boonton, they probably went to California School for the Deaf, either at Berkeley or at Fremont! ASL, of course, is spoken at the school.

A FINNISH HOMESTEAD IN MICHIGAN’S UPPER PENINSULA

At Pelkie, Michigan, there is a Hanka Homestead, established sometime in the early part of 20th century.

This homestead was established by Herman Hanka, an immigrant from Finland who became a stump farmer and later, established a plot of land.

This land contains the Hanka Homestead Museum, which exhibits the Finnish culture in USA. It was listed in 1984 on the

National Register of Historic Places.

Herman Hanka? What about him? He was deaf (though not knowing

ASL).

how long have you known your deaf client?

COMMENTS FROM A CART OPERATOR – continuing series

“How does that machine work?” Over the years, as a court reporter and

CART provider using a steno machine, I cannot tell you the number of times that I have heard this question.

It is a little difficult to answer that in a single sentence.

Today’s steno machines are intricate computers themselves, and they record the keystrokes that are being entered by the court reporter or captioner.

The steno machine is usually hooked up either via a cable or in a wireless manner to another computer. That computer has

Computer-Aided Translation (CAT) software loaded on it. The CAT software accepts input from a steno keyboard and translates it into text.

The most important part of making the words translate properly is what is called the dictionary or dictionaries that the captioner or

CART provider has loaded in that CAT software program. A dictionary is a list of words, phrases, punctuation, and symbols and the associated steno. It basically tells the computer how to translate what the captioner is writing on the steno machine.

As the captioner writes on the steno machine, the CAT software matches the steno being written with entries in the dictionary and translates those strokes into English.

A PET PEEVE OF BEING DEAF

On relay calls, being constantly referred as the third person – the hearing person would tell the relay operator “please tell him that” or “please tell him this”

Very annoying and there have been times when DeafDigest editor

“blew up” and told the hearing person “I am not the third party in this relay call. You are talking directly to me” and this blow up often stuns the hearing person, not knowing quite what to say further during the call!

(Every deaf person, no matter if it is ASL, oral,

Cued Speech, late-deafened, hearing aid user, CI user, etc, share these pet peeves. You may laugh or cry)

DeafLaw

The Kenyan High Court has told Nation Television that their newscasts must have sign language interpreters, effective within the coming 90 days.

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 10 Years Ago:

Voice cell phones everywhere but not a single one compatible with our TTYs. This will change if Panasonic has its way.

This company gave a demonstration of their compatible cell phone at the Consumer Electronics Association program held recently at Las Vegas.

(since TTYs are obsolete, this new Panasonic invention got nowhere)

……

News of the Week – Looking Back 5 Years Ago:

At a recent local government council meeting, a report was distributed by the municipal medical staff. Included in the report was the comment:

Interpreter services are needed for deaf-mute patients.

Members in the community are willing to do this as a volunteer service

It probably was a report from a small village in one of these nations in Asia where newspapers routinely call the deaf as deaf-dumb or as deaf-mute.

Wrong! It was a medical services agency serving a small town in Montana!

And to add insult to injury, volunteer interpreters mean one thing – shoddy interpreting!

……

Deaf Apocalypse of the Week:

Last week a human rights award was given to Australia’s

Big Four movie chains. The award was for giving moviegoers the right to freely participate in the cultural life of the community!

Huh! If these movie chains do not offer captions, then how could the deaf “freely” participate in the same cultural life that the hearing enjoy?

An Australian deaf dissident made a big stink out of that award in a web posting.

…….

A stranger, with his dog, came to you.

You thought he asked:

Can I meet him?

Can I pet him?
