The author who sits, sweats, and crafts the words we see on the page. The one credited in the byline. Right? Often it's the editors who do all the truly great work ? sifting through the pages of ideas and sharpening the storyline, restructuring, exhuming the lead, fine tuning the punch line ? until the story leaps off the page. Listen to this solo by a 19 year old Paul Kossoff in Free's "All Right Now." Start from 2:02 if you're not a Free fan. Here's what really happened ... During the studio sessions for this track, Kossoff spent hours and hours trying out licks, shaping ideas, and improvising the solo. The band began to run out of patience, money and time. So overnight, one of the engineers decided to sit down and sift through Kossof's ideas and put together all the best parts. When the band re-entered the next day, the engineer had finished. He hit ?play' and the band listened. The solo you just heard is the solo that the engineer had pieced together from the best of Kossof's ideas. Kossof learned and played the exact same solo onstage every day for the next 6 years before his untimely death. The tone and style ? all Paul Kossof. The solo itself? The thing that has sat at the top of ?greatest guitar solos of all time' lists for over 30 years? Take another listen. I can hear at least 4 major edits. You? My take ... simply ... thank God for editors. They're the ones who often turn great ideas into reality. No related posts..

BAD COMPANY BIOGRAPHY One of the most acclaimed bands of the classic rock era, England's Bad Company has put its indelible stamp on rock 'n' roll with a straight- ahead, no-frills musical approach that has resulted in the creation of some of the most timeless rock anthems ever. Led by the incomparable singer and songwriter Paul Rodgers, arguably the finest singer in rock 'n ' roll and a huge songwriting talent. Formed in 1973, Bad Company came to life when Rodgers was looking to start anew after the disintegration of his legendary band Free. His powerhouse vocals and songwriting were a main ingredient during Free's impressive five-year run; a period of time that saw the release of seven extremely influential albums that featured Free's minimalist blues-rock approach. Included among Free's dynamic body of work is the 1970 smash, "All Right Now," one of the most recognizable rock anthems ever recorded. Lyrics and melody by Rodgers. He was Free’s main songwriter. Rodgers had met Mott The Hoople guitarist Mick Ralphs and after jamming together and listening to new songs that Ralphs had penned and songs that Rodgers had penned, Ralphs made the decision to leave Mott and form a new band with Rodgers. The duo recruited former King Crimson bassist/vocalist Boz Burrell, added drummer Simon Kirke and Rodgers Christened the band Bad Company. Rodgers’ brought in Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant and Bad Company became the first band signed to Zeppelin's Swan Song label. "I had to fight to get the management and the record company to accept the name Bad Company," explains Rodgers.

Saiichi Sugiyama Band Epk 2016
SAIICHI SUGIYAMA BAND EPK (July 2016) British blues-rock guitarist Saiichi Sugiyama and his band are touring the UK in September 2016 ahead of their new album release next year. Saiichi Sugiyama Band is a group of musicians hailing from Surrey/London that harks back to the halcyon days of rock and soul, 1965-1974, brought together in 2010 by the guitarist/composer Saiichi [pronounced: “sigh-eee- chee”], who has a career spanning 25 years as a solo artist in the British blues scene. The core of the group is Rietta Austin (lead vocals), Saiichi Sugiyama (guitar/vocals/composer), Ben Reed (bass guitar) and Mune Sugiyama (producer/arranger/drums). When playing live, the group are augmented by touring musicians including Stuart Dixon (rhythm guitar), Katrin Yr (lead vocals) and Wez Johnson (drums). The former members Lizzie Hibbert (lead vocals) and Dave Munch Moore (keys) also record with the group in studio. The group has been spending the past months working on their new studio album in various recording studios, a follow up to the studio live album “the Smokehouse Sessions” from 2014. The new album will include a track entitled “Melting Away”, written by Saiichi and featuring the late bass hero Andy Fraser, ex-Free and composer of the 1970 smash single, “All Right Now.” The initial inspiration for “Melting Away” came to Saiichi while on a trip to his native Japan. To Saiichi the melody was reminiscent of Free guitarist Paul Kossoff, who died in 1976. Creating a demo when he returned home to the UK, Saiichi came up with bass parts that brought Free bassman Andy Fraser to mind.

THE BIRTH OF HARD ROCK 1964-9 Charles Shaar Murray Hard rock was born in spaces too small to contain it, birthed and midwifed by youths simultaneously exhilarated by the prospect of emergent new freedoms and frustrated by the slow pace of their development, and delivered with equipment which had never been designed for the tasks to which it was now applied. Hard rock was the sound of systems under stress, of energies raging against confnement and constriction, of forces which could not be contained, merely harnessed. It was defned only in retrospect, because at the time of its inception it did not even recognise itself. The musicians who played the frst ‘hard rock’ and the audiences who crowded into the small clubs and ballrooms of early 1960s Britain to hear them, thought they were playing something else entirely. In other words, hard rock was – like rock and roll itself – a historical accident. It began as an earnest attempt by British kids in the 1960s, most of whom were born in the 1940s and raised and acculturated in the 1950s, to play American music, drawing on blues, soul, R&B, jazz and frst-generation rock, but forced to reinvent both the music, and its world, in their own image, resulting in something entirely new. However, hard rock was neither an only child, nor born fully formed. It shared its playpen, and many of its toys, with siblings (some named at the time and others only in retrospect) like R&B, psychedelia, progressive rock, art-rock and folk-rock, and it emerged only gradually from the intoxicating stew of myriad infuences that formed the musical equivalent of primordial soup in the uniquely turbulent years of the second (technicolour!) half of the 1960s.

Fter Decades Away from the Music Scene, Guitarist Wally Stocker Is
fter decades away from the music scene, guitarist Wally Stocker is back on his feet again and back where he belongs, playing lead guitar with a new lineup in The Babys. From 1977 to ’80, the group amassed a string of radio-friendly hits including “Isn’t It Time,” “Every Time I Think of You,” “Head First,” “Back on My Feet Again,” and “Midnight Rendezvous.” A s lead guitarist, S t o c k e r provided the six- string muscle that powered those hits up the charts. Born March 27, 1953, in London, Stocker took up guitar at age nine. A passionate devotee of Free guitarist Paul Kossoff, he honed his chops in short-lived bands Joy and Pegasus. His break came in 1975, when he joined the fledgling The Babys, which included lead vocalist/bassist John Waite, keyboardist/ guitarist Michael Corby, and drummer Tony Brock. Signed to Chrysalis on the basis of a four-song video, the band released five albums – The Babys, Broken Heart, Head First, Union Jacks, and On the Edge – and toured with the likes of Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick, Journey, AC/ DC, and Rush. Wally Stocker The Babys disbanded in December, with a Les Paul 1980, and Stocker went to tour and re- goldtop in 2013. cord with Rod Stewart, Air Supply, and Humble Pie. In 2013, The Babys reunited with Stocker and Brock alongside new recruits lead singer/bassist John Bisaha and guitarist J.P. Cervoni. Last July, the band performed its first gig in almost 33 years. At age 60, Stocker’s playing is remark- ably rust-free – his trademark smoky slow-hand vibrato and chunky rhythm guitar colors proudly intact.
