    * THE METAPHYSICAL REVIEW SIX OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOQOOOOOO Welcome to the members of APA-45 who have joined the gallant band of people who actually read this magazine every four months or so. If you don't belong to ANZAPA or APA-45, and you have received this document through the mail, then you should write a letter of comment, or you will not receive another METREV. * And who, where, perpetrates this . ' criminal magazine? It's BRUCE R GILLESPIE, of GPO BOX 5195AA, MELBOURNE, VICTORIA 3001, AUSTRALIA. In here there's stuff by me (page 2), Alex Robb / (page 7), and letter writers (p 23).- Good clean rubbish, dedi cated to AUSTRALIA IN 75J THIS IS iA SOB by b*r*g i As I was paying to Colin Bennett the other day.... i Well, that's always a good line with which to break into a conversation. And I only spoke to him for five minutes about an article I'm doing on early Australian films (yes, we had a film industry before 1930). Yet it's something iof revelation that Colin Bennett, film critic for THE AGE newspaper, and some ^ort of hero to me for many years, has his own little desk on the huge floor that is THE AGE's Features department, and that he works regular hours, just like the rest of us (regular hours from 5pm - 10pm, that is), and that He helps a lot of small and struggling film societies and amateur film makeis, as well as taking up the cudgels / the huge issues that still plague the film industry in Australia.

  • A Year in the Life of Bottle the Curmudgeon What You Are About to Read Is the Book of the Blog of the Facebook Project I Started When My Dad Died in 2019
A Year in the Life of Bottle the Curmudgeon What you are about to read is the book of the blog of the Facebook project I started when my dad died in 2019. It also happens to be many more things: a diary, a commentary on contemporaneous events, a series of stories, lectures, and diatribes on politics, religion, art, business, philosophy, and pop culture, all in the mostly daily publishing of 365 essays, ostensibly about an album, but really just what spewed from my brain while listening to an album. I finished the last essay on June 19, 2020 and began putting it into book from. The hyperlinked but typo rich version of these essays is available at: https://albumsforeternity.blogspot.com/ Thank you for reading, I hope you find it enjoyable, possibly even entertaining. bottleofbeef.com exists, why not give it a visit? Have an album you want me to review? Want to give feedback or converse about something? Send your own wordy words to [email protected] , and I will most likely reply. Unless you’re being a jerk. © Bottle of Beef 2020, all rights reserved. Welcome to my record collection. This is a book about my love of listening to albums. It started off as a nightly perusal of my dad's record collection (which sadly became mine) on my personal Facebook page. Over the ensuing months it became quite an enjoyable process of simply ranting about what I think is a real art form, the album. It exists in three forms: nightly posts on Facebook, a chronologically maintained blog that is still ongoing (though less frequent), and now this book.

  • He Thought of Himself in 1962, at Fifty, When He Would Be Old, but Not Quite
He thought of himself in 1962, at fifty, when he would be old, but not quite old enough to be useless, and of the weathered, knowing doctor he would be by then, with the secret stories, the tragedies and success stacked behind him. Also stacked would be books by the thousand, for there would be a study, vast and gloomy, richly crammed with the trophies of a lifetime’s travel and thought—rare rain forest herbs, poisoned arrows, failed electrical inventions, soapstone figurines, shrunken skulls, aboriginal art. On the shelves, medical reference and meditations, certainly, but also the books that now filled the cubbyhole in the bungalow attic—the eighteenth-century poetry that had almost persuaded him he should be a landscape gardener, his third-edition Jane Austin, his Eliot and Lawrence and Wilfred Owen, the complete set of Conrad, the priceless 1783 edition of Crabbe’s The Village, his Housman, the autographed copy of Auden’s The Dance of Death. For this was the point, surely: he would be a better doctor for having read literature. What deep readings his modified sensibility might make of human suffering, of the self-destructive folly or sheer bad luck that drive men toward ill health! Birth, death, and frailty in between. Rise and fall—this was the doctor’s business, and it was literature’s too. He was thinking of the nineteenth-century novel. Broad tolerance and the long view, and inconspicuously warm heart and cool judgment; his kind of doctor would be alive to the monstrous patterns of fate, and to the vain and comic denial of the inevitable; he would press the enfeebled pulse, hear the expiring breath, feel the fevered hand begin to cool and reflect, in the manner that only literature and religion teach, on the puniness and nobility of mankind ..

  • Blackie and the Rodeo Kings Is a Canadian Supergroup Born of the Highest Intentions
A Conversation with Blackie & the Rodeo Kings by Frank Goodman (Puremusic.com, 10/2004) Blackie and the Rodeo Kings is a Canadian supergroup born of the highest intentions. They came together to immortalize, or at least further popularize, the great songs of Willie P. Bennett, the Jimi Hendrix of the mandolin. (Although Willie has a number of solo albums out, he is better known as the magneto in the Fred Eaglesmith band, a perennially touring outfit of mythic proportion.) The three principals are each artists of great stature and immense talent. Stephen Fearing has often been called the Richard Thompson of Canada, which is a compliment to both men. He is a gripping solo artist and an acoustic wonder, rare. I was very impressed by how strong an ensemble player he also is, since many solo experts do not excel here. His songs are superlative, and whether penned solo or with his growing number of partners, you always hear his voice in the song. Colin Linden is one of the most audacious talents of the Canadian scene. His eight solo CDs are only the beginning. He is a sought after producer, session player, and songwriter—on stage, in the studio, and on screen. His cameo as a minstrel clergyman in the Coen Brothers’ film Intolerable Cruelty was excellent, he sang a beautiful and faithful version of the Simon and Garfunkel classic “April Come She Will.” Colin is a blistering slide guitar player, an inspired studio force, and a musician’s musician. I didn’t know as much about Tom Wilson when I met the group recently in NYC, before their appearance at Joe’s Pub (a beautiful listening room in Soho).
