His Voice as the Sound Traditional spiritual, arr. Alice Parker and Robert Shaw

His voice as the sound of the dulcimer sweet, Love sits in his eyelids and scatters delight Is heard thro’ the shadows of death; Thro’ all the bright regions on high. The cedars of Lebanon bow at his feet, Their faces the Cherubim veil in his sight, The air is perfum’d with his breath. And tremble with fullness of joy.

His lips as a fountain of righteousness flow He looks, and ten thousands of angels rejoice, That waters the garden of grace, And myriads wait for his word, From which their salvation the Gentiles shall know, He speaks, and eternity filled with his voice, And bask in the smile of his face. Re-echoes the praise of her Lord.

I Will Arise Traditional spiritual, arr. Alice Parker and Robert Shaw

I will arise and go to Jesus, Teach me some melodious sonnet He will embrace me in His arms, Sung by flaming tongues above, In the arms of my dear Saviour, Praise the mount, I’m fixed upon it, Oh! There are ten thousand charms. Mount of Thy redeeming love.

Come, thou fount of ev’ry blessing, Tune my heart to sing Thy grace, Streams of mercy never ceasing, Call for of loudest praise.

God Is Seen Arr. Alice Parker

Through all the world below God is seen all around, The ocean it doth roar Search hills and valleys through, And beat upon the shore, There He's found. And all praise, in their ways, The God who ne'er declines His designs. The growing of the corn, The lily and the thorn, The sun with all his rays speaks of God as he flies. The pleasant and forlorn, The comet in her blaze, All declare, God is there. "God", she cries. In meadows drest in green, God is seen. The shining of the stars, The moon, when she appears See springing waters rise fountains flow, rivers run. His awful name declares; The mist that veils the sky. See them fly, through the sky. Hides the sun. And join the solemn sound all around, Then down the rain doth pour, All around.

I Got Shoes Traditional spiritual, arr. Alice Parker and Robert Shaw

I got shoes, you got shoes, I got a wings, you got a wings, All o’ God’s chillun got shoes, All o’ God’s chilun got a wings, When I get to Heab’n, gonna put on my shoes, When I get to Heab’n, gonna put on my wings, I’m gonna walk all over God’s heab’n. The Spring is Fresh Text by Sara Teasdale (“May Night”)

The spring is fresh and fearless And every leaf is new, The world is brimming with moonlight, The lilac brimmed with dew.

Here in the moving shadows I catch my breath and sing – My heart is fresh and fearless And over-brimmed with spring.

The Fountain Text by Sara Teasdale

Oh in the deep blue night The fountain sang and sang The fountain sang alone; And on the marble rim It sang to the drowsy heart The milk-white peacocks slept, Of a satyr carved in stone. Their dreams were strange and dim.

The fountain sang and sang Bright dew was on the grass, But the satyr never stirred – And on the ilex dew, Only the great white moon The dreamy milk-white birds In the empty heaven heard. Were all a-glisten too.

The fountain sang and sang The things one cannot tell, The dreaming peacocks stirred And the gleaming dew-drops fell.

Didn’t It Rain Traditional spiritual, arr. Stacey V. Gibbs

Fo’rty days an’ fo’rty nights de rain kept-a fallin’ Fallin’ yes, didn’ it rain? Fo’rty days, fo’rty nights when de rain kept-a fallin’ De wicked clumb de tree an’for help kept-a callin’ For dey heard de waters wailin’, didn’ it rain, Tell me Nora, didn’ it rain? Didn’t it rain? Tell me Nora, didn’ it rain?

The Pasture (No. 2 from “Where the Earth Meets the Sky) Text by Robert Frost (1874-1963)

I'm going out to clean the pasture spring; I'll only stop to rake the leaves away (And wait to watch the water clear, I may): I sha'n't be gone long.—You come too.

I'm going out to fetch the little calf That's standing by the mother. It's so young, It totters when she licks it with her tongue. I sha'n't be gone long.—You come too.

For each child that's born a morning star rises and sings to the universe who we are.

WE ARE ONE.

Disney Fly Medley Sammy Cain, Sammy Fain, Richard and Robert Sherman Arr. Jamey Ray

Think of a wonderful thought Any happy little thought Up through the atmosphere Think of Christmas, think of snow Up where the air is clear Think of sleigh bells off you go Oh, let's go fly a kite! Like reindeer in the sky You can fly Oh, oh, oh! Let's go fly a kite Think of the happiest things Up to the highest height! It's the same as having wings Let's go fly a kite and send it soaring Take the path that moonbeams make Up through the atmosphere If the moon is still awake Up where the air is clear You'll see him wink his eye Let's go fly a kite! You can fly I saw a peanut stand, heard a rubber band I saw a needle that winked it’s eye Up you go with a height and ho But I think I will have seen ev’rything To the stars beyond the blue When I see an elephant fly There's a Neverland waiting for you Where all your happy dreams come true I saw a front porch swing, heard a diamond Every dream that you dream will come true ring When there's a smile in your heart I saw a polka dot railroad tie There's no better time to start But I think I will have seen ev’rything Think of all the joy you'll find When I see an elephant fly When you leave the world behind You can fly And bid your cares goodbye Let’s go fly a kite, high! You can fly

There Will Be Rest Text by Sara Teasdale

There will be rest, and sure stars shining Over the roof-tops crowned with snow, A reign of rest, serene forgetting, The music of stillness holy and low.

I will make this world of my devising, Out of a dream in my lonely mind, I shall find the crystal of peace, – above me Stars I shall find.

April, Come She Will Words and music by Paul Simon (b. 1941) Arr. Philip Lawson (b. 1957)

April come she will When streams are ripe and swelled with rain. May she will stay Resting in my arms again. June she’ll change her tune. In restless walk she’ll prowl the night. July she will fly And give no warning to her flight. August die she must. The autumn winds blow chilly and cold. September I’ll remember A love once new has now grown old.

Butterfly Arr. Mia Makaroff & Anna-Mari Kähärä

Sweet is the sound of my newborn wings, I stretch them open and let them dry. I haven’t seen this world before But I’m excused, I’m a butterfly.

Sweet is the touch of your newborn wings, We fly in circles, we play with the sun. We haven’t seen this world before, so fair, so bright, so blue the sky. Love me, love me on the leaves before we say goodbye. Love me, kiss me with the breeze, you will be my lullaby. Tomorrow I’ll die and you’ll be my lullaby.

Sweet is the wind as it gently blows The day away and the nighttime comes. Great are the wonders that silence shows, I fall asleep and I dream of the sun and my butterfly.

About Voce: Its Mission and Its Musicians

Voce is an auditioned, professional mixed choir whose sound reflects the unique musical vision of its Artistic Director and co-founder, Mark Singleton. After working with Voce in April, 2008, Morten Lauridsen -- the most widely performed composer in the United States -- had this to say about Voce: “Voce is clearly already in the upper echelon of American chamber choirs. During my recent residence with the ensemble I was constantly astonished at the level of artistry displayed by both the singers and their conductor, Mark Singleton. I have no doubt that this superb chorus will soon be recognized throughout the United States as exemplifying choral performance at its finest.” Dr. Lauridsen then returned in 2009 to record an entire CD of his works with Voce. The CD, entitled “Sure on This Shining Night,” was complimented for its “tender warmth, exquisite nuance, and enduring spirit” by the American Record Guide.

Since our founding in 2006, Voce has sought to provide performance and educational opportunities for today’s singers and the next generations of musicians. We are a vocational ensemble -- we use our music to evoke artistry in others. Recent studies have confirmed the value of singing in education, as represented by the following important findings:

• Choral singing is an integral part of arts education, which is a necessary component of a comprehensive and competitive education. Singing in choir promotes academic achievement and develops necessary life skills • The collective expression of a chorus singing together has the power to lift spirits and transform lives (source: www.ChorusAmerica.org)

About the Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art

Voce, Inc. has established The Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art to provide funds for the commissioning of new works of art by, and to promote the recognition of, gifted aspiring artists. The Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art was created in honor of Dr. Peter Bagley for his lifetime devotion to working with young musicians to help them realize their full artistic potential. As Professor of Music at The University of Connecticut, his rigorous academic program and exacting standards, combined with his seemingly endless encouragement of and support for talented students, produced some of the finest choral musicians in the United States. Through his work as a guest conductor for numerous festivals and all-state choirs throughout the country, Dr. Bagley continues to inspire young musicians everywhere. In honor of Dr. Bagley and to support him in his lifetime mission of helping young artists to achieve their goals, Voce is proud to have commissioned four new choral pieces that were premiered in our 2013-2014 ”Full Circle” concert series. The October 19, 2013 concert entitled “Mason‐Dixon” featured a new commissioned work by Colin Britt; the February 8, 2014 concert entitled “Immortal Bach” featured a new commissioned work by Dan Campolieta; and the April 12, 2014 concert entitled “Life’s a Beach” featured two new commissioned works by Jason McCoy. Performances by Voce and other groups of existing works by Jason, Dan, and Colin have been widely acclaimed, and Voce and Dr. Bagley were delighted to provide further opportunities for their creative voices to be heard.

The first recipient of The Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art was Chilean composer Javier Farias Caballero, whose work was premiered by Voce and Alturas Duo – an instrumental ensemble specializing in the performance of South American Music – in the fall of 2008. The composition, “Oceana,” draws upon the musical heritage of Chile using the text of the heralded Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, and epitomizes The Fund’s goal of broadening the range of cultural influences in the choral repertoire available to American choral ensembles.

The Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art was established with the generous contribution of Dr. Bagley, and Dr. Bagley’s contributions this year have made the three new commissions possible. If you would like to honor Dr. Bagley with a contribution to The Peter Bagley Commissioning Fund for New Works of Art, please email us at [email protected]. In addition to notifying Dr. Bagley of your contribution, your name will be listed in Voce’s concert programs together with other donors.
