Ferneley Catalogue JOHN FERNELEY (1782 – 1860) CATALOGUE OF PAINTINGS CHRONOLOGICALLY BY SUBJECT Compiled by R. Fountain Updated December 2015 1 SUBJECT INDEX Page A - Country Life; Fairs; Rural Sports, Transport and Genre. 7 - 11 D - Dogs; excluding hounds hunting. 12 - 23 E - Horses at Liberty. 24 - 58 G - Horses with grooms and attendants (excluding stabled horses). 59 - 64 H - Portraits of Gentlemen and Lady Riders. 65 - 77 J - Stabled Horses. 74 - 77 M - Military Subjects. 79 P - Hunting; Hunts and Hounds. 80 - 90 S - Shooting. 91 - 93 T - Portraits of Racehorses, Jockeys, Trainers and Races. 94 - 99 U - Portraits of Individuals and Families (Excluding equestrian and sporting). 100 - 104 Index of Clients 105 - 140 2 NOTES ON INDEX The basis of the index are John Ferneley’s three account books transcribed by Guy Paget and published in the latter’s book The Melton Mowbray of John Ferneley, 1931. There are some caveats; Ferneley’s writing was always difficult to read, the accounts do not start until 1808, are incomplete for his Irish visits 1809-1812 and pages are missing for entries in the years 1820-1826. There are also a significant number of works undoubtedly by John Ferneley senior that are not listed (about 15-20%) these include paintings that were not commissioned or sold, those painted for friends and family and copies. A further problem arises with unlisted paintings which are not signed in full ie J. Ferneley/Melton Mowbray/xxxx or J. Ferneley/pinxt/xxxx but only with initials, J. Ferneley/xxxx, or not at all. These paintings may be by John Ferneley junior or Claude Loraine Ferneley whose work when at its best is difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish from that of their father or may be by either son with the help of their father. In the Index the first column is the B.S.A.T subject letter, the second is the year recorded in the account book (which may not be the same as on the painting), the third is the reference number in Paget’s transcription and the last the identification number. The title/description of the painting is followed by the charge Ferneley made for the painting in pounds and Shillings. Finally, the measurements in inches are given and the method of signing. If signed but details not available it is listed as S & D. 3 Photo Identification The main source is the archives of the London Gallery Arthur Ackermann and Son which dealt in sporting Art from 1783 until 1991,, other significant sources are the catalogues of Richard Green Fine Paintings 1955 onwards, the auction houses Christies, Sothebys, Bonhams, Tennants and the Witt Library. In the last years additional on line sources have become available particularly the Public Catalogue Foundation which lists and illustrates all oil paintings in public collections (including the National Trust), the Bridgeman Art Library, Encore images and the Artprice Index. An entry “Private Collection” signifies that the painting has been identified but is not in the public domain. The compiler would welcome any corrections or additions to the index. CHRONOLOGICAL LIST OF THE ROYAL COMPANY OF 2lrrt)er0. Nulla Caledoniam Gens unquarn impune laces set, Usque sagittiferis rohur et ardor inest. Pitcairnii, Poemata. By signing the Laws of the Royal Company of Scottish Archers, you en¬ gage to he faithful to your King and your Country ; for we are not a private company, as some people imagine, but constituted hy Royal Charter his Ma¬ jesty's First Regiment of Guards in Scotland; and if the King should ever come to Edinburgh, it is our duty to take charge of his Royal Person, from Inchbunkland Brae on the east, to Cramond Bridge on the west. But besides being the Body Guards of the King, this Company is the only thing now remaining in Scotland, which properly commemorates the many noble deeds performed by our ancestors by the aid of the Bow. It ought therefore to be the pride and ambition of every true Scotsman to be a member of it. Roslin’s Speech. EDINBURGH: PRINTED BY P. NEII.T.. 1819.
