Some of GBA’s 2015 Introduction highlights include: • We shared knowledge with over 3,700 participants through 115 education and networking opportunities. Our 2015 Inspire Speakers Series brought nationally and locally renowned presenters like Will Allen, Charles Montgomery, Jeremy Rifkin, and Toni Griffin. We launched InspireSpeakersSeries.com as an archive of all four inspirational seasons to date. • We worked closely with K-12 partners in our Green & Healthy Schools Academy cohort to help them make lasting change in their buildings, curriculum, culture, leadership, and communities. • We celebrated our 2030 District partners, who have committed 435 buildings to 2030 Challenge goals. Our partners achieved a 12.5% reduction in energy consumption, 10.3% reduction in water use, and a 24.2% reduction in transportation emissions (below baselines). We created Make My Trip Count, the region’s most comprehensive transportation survey to date, which generated 20,710 responses related to Pittsburgh’s commuter patterns. • We continued to increase the capacity of our networks to undertake new issues by reconvening a Policy Committee and laying the groundwork for a 2016 Health Committee and Pittsburgh 2030 District Advisory Committee. • We reached new audiences with nearly 100 blog posts, a 44% increase in web users, and over 10,000 tweets @go_gba.

GBA’s hallmark lecture series, the Inspire Speakers Series, offers national and local expert perspectives on various topics related to sustainability. The series inspires new projects, partnerships, and ideas to make our region’s businesses, communities, government, schools, and places healthy and thriving. The Green & Healthy Schools Academy promotes vibrant, just, inspiring, healthy, and high performing schools and communities by working with educators, administrators, students, and community members. Our programs assist schools with embedding sustainability values – environmental impact, human health and social equity, and economic vitality – into mindsets, culture, facilities, teaching and learning, and operational practices. Programs include the School Sustainability Culture Program, Healthy Schools Technical Assistance, Innovative Learning, and Green Apple Day of Service. We strive to catalyze systemic change through a comprehensive approach of fostering trust, seeding inspiration, delivering education, and supporting implementation.

The Pittsburgh 2030 District is an internationally recognized, locally driven, voluntary initiative that encourages business owners and facility managers in Downtown and Oakland to work collaboratively toward 50% reductions in energy use, water consumption, and transportation emissions (below baselines) by the year 2030. Throughout 2015, the Pittsburgh 2030 District continued to lead the 12 North American 2030 Districts in square footage committed. Of 271 million square feet of real estate committed to 2030 District cities internationally, 25% is in Pittsburgh.

In September and October 2015, GBA led the Make My Trip Count (MMTC) commuter survey, which gave Pittsburghers a unique opportunity to provide details about how they commute to work. MMTC asked commuters where they travel from and to – and which transportation modes they use. Representing major employment centers, Pittsburgh 2030 District Property Partners were key in generating interest and responses, with results compared to an existing Downtown transportation baseline. Survey results were leveraged to calculate District carbon emissions, demonstrating a 24.2% reduction below baseline.

Congratulations to our 2015 award nominees, finalists, and honorees! GBA’s 2015 Legacy Award honored Gary Saulson of The PNC Financial Services Group for his many contributions to the design and operation of high performing buildings in Pittsburgh and around the world.

GBA’s members and friends submitted nominations for the 2015 Luminary Award and, via public voting, Apple White from BNY Mellon was celebrated for her critical role in spearheading the company’s sustainability initiatives and culture.
