  • Scottish Eccentrics
SCOTTISH ECCENTRICS by HUGH MacDIARMID SCOTTISH ECCENTRICS The distinguished Scottish poet and literary critic who writes this book recalls how Bernard Shaw in On The Rocks ironically declares that the massacres after the Battle of Culloden were not "mur- der" but simply "liquidation," since the slain Scots in question were "incompatible with British civilization." He then surveys the whole field of Scottish biography, and shows how true this has proved of an amazing number of distinguished Scots, no matter how successfully the bulk of the Scottish people have been assim- ilated to English standards since the Union. The facts are irresist- ible and bring out the "eccen- tricity" of Scottish genius in an extraordinary fashion. The author gives full-length studies often outstanding Scottish eccentrics, including Lord George Gordon of the "Gordon Riots"; Sir Thomas Urquhart, the trans- lator of Rabelais', "Christopher North"; "Ossian" (James Mac- pherson, M.P.); James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd; and William McGonagall, perhaps the world's best "bad poet". But he supports these leading cases with apt material drawn from the lives of hundreds of Scots of every period in history and every walk of life, and in this way builds up a bril- liant panoramic picture of Scottish psychology through the ages, singularly at variance with all generally accepted views of the national character. 15 S. net By the Same Author Poetry Sangschaw Penny Wheep To Circumjack Cencrastus First Hymn to Lenin, and other Poems A Drunk Man looks at the Thistle Stony Limits, and other Poems Fiction Annals of the Five Senses Translations The Handmaid of the Lord (novel, from the Spanish of Ramon Maria de Tenreiro) Birlinn Chlann-Rhagnaill (poem, from the Scots Gaelic of Alasdair Mac- Mhaighstir Alasdair) Criticism Contemporary Scottish Studies Albyn: or Scotland and the Future Scottish Scene (in collaboration with Lewis Grassic Gibbon) At the Sign of the Thistle etc.

  • “RON WAS the Riffmeister and All That Was Good in This World
“RON WAS THE Riffmeister and all that was good in this world,” declares Andrew Innes of Primal Scream, just one of countless bands who owe an inestimable debt to Ron Asheton’s (pictured, in glasses) monolithic stun guitar onslaughts on the first two Stooges albums. Asheton, found dead yesterday at his Ann Arbor home from a suspected heart attack, was the most influential punk guitarist of all time, his monosyllabic, piledriver riffs providing blueprints for later applecart- upsetters like the New York Dolls and Sex Pistols. Even former Captain Beefheart and Jeff Buckley guitarist Gary Lucas has paid tribute to “some of the best and most iconic riffs in punk history”. In his own private world Asheton, whose unusual pantheon of heroes included Adolf Hitler and the Three Stooges, was the most dangerous embodiment of the Stooges’ dum dum boys aesthetic, infamous for his extensive collection of Nazi memorabilia and the unsavoury swastika armbands later adopted by UK punk- shockers. Ironically, he was the only Stooge who eschewed hard drugs. Ron was born in Washington DC in 1948, brought to Ann Arbor by his mother after his Marine Corp pilot father Ronald’s death in 1963. Besotted by the Beatles and the Stones, he became obsessed with Pete Townshend after a Who gig during a mid-’60s pilgrimage to London with high school buddy Dave Alexander. He played bass in local bands including the Prime Movers, Chosen Few and Dirty Shames before forming the Psychedelic Stooges with Alexander, Scott and a local kid he’d met called James Osterberg – rechristened Iggy after a stint in a band called The Iguanas.

Elizabeth Sykes Egerton (1777-1853) and Lydia Hoare Acland (1786-1856) lived at Tatton Park, Cheshire, and Killerton House, Devon, respectively. Upon their marriage in the early nineteenth century, they brought with them the music books they had compiled so far to their new homes, and they continued to collect and play music after marriage.

  • Oscar Bianchi: Achat De Chevaux (2008) the Ability to Make
Oscar Bianchi : Achat de Chevaux (2008) world-première, commissioned by impuls with support of SACEM published by Editions Durand / Universal Music Publishing The ability to make decisions outside the realm of karma: this is my favourite meaning of the fourth chakra, Anahata. Since music and all intellectual activities are closely related to life forces, I found Anahata to be a powerful symbol for the expression of all the options that are available to an individual both socially and artistically. This is a concerto, because the qualities necessary for making decisions outside the realm of karma demand virtuosity. Conscious of the idealistic aspects of this concept, I have stressed this so-called “ability” rhetorically by interacting with specific music elements, such as rising glissandi (potential metaphors for challenges to gravity) and rhythmic ostinati (the perpetual advance of life). Anahata Concerto is dedicated to Beat Furrer and the Klangforum Wien. Oscar Bianchi, November 2008 Winner of the 2005 Gaudeamus prize, Italian-Swiss composer Oscar Bianchi is quickly becoming recognized by critics, fellow musicians, and audiences as one of the most idiomatic and dynamic composers of his generation. His music, which is characterized by dense textures, vivid imagination, and dra matic tension has already been played to critical acclaim by major ensembles such as Ictus, Les Percussions de Strasbourg, Nieuw Ensemble, Neue Vocalsolisten Stuttgart, Ensemble l’Itinéraire in venues like Lincoln Center, Merkin Hall NY, Muziekgebouw, Venice Biennale, Musica Strasbourg, Ircam Centre-Pompidou, Abbaye de Royaumont, Eclat Stuttgart, Ars Musica Brussels, World New Music Days-Tage für Neue Musik Zürich. His works have been broadcasted in many European national radio stations.

  • Luisa Vinci Began Her Musical Studies at the Civic School of Music in Milan
Luisa Vinci began her musical studies at the Civic School of Music in Milan. In 1986 she graduated from the G. Verdi Conservatory of Como with a specialization in trombone. She immediately began working as a freelance professional with symphonic orchestras, ensembles and orchestras specialized in the Baroque and Renaissance repertoire. She also studied Literature and Philosophy at the State University of Milan and developed her managerial skills in the first Master’s Program in Management for the Performing Arts at the LUISS University of Rome in 1988. In 1992 she began working with the publishing house Sugar, where she was in charge of promoting the Suvini Zerboni classical and contemporary music catalogue. In this role she helped increase the number of national and international performances of Italian symphonic and chamber music, historically a very precious and particular repertoire. She entered into contact with the most important composers represented by the publishing house, including Goffredo Petrassi, Franco Donatoni, Luciano Berio, and Ivan Fedele, whose works she promoted via radio and discography. She also supervised performance of these works and commissions for new ones with major Italian and international musical institutions. In 2000 she joined Casa Ricordi – BMG, becoming Director of Promotion in 2002. In this position she worked to promote the impressive catalogue of operas and the modern and contemporary repertoire, contributing to the circulation of musical works through major co- productions, new commissions and marketing to increase the number of performances and thus earnings from rental fees. She has worked with orchestra and opera house directors, festivals and orchestras planning new commissions of musical works for composers, among whom we mention Salvatore Sciarrino, Luca Francesconi, Giorgio Battistelli, Giacomo Manzoni, and Azio Corghi.
