“To awaken a nation asleep”: Community Building Amid Radical Activism, and the Indian Alcatraz Occupation by R. Zöe Costanzo ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines events leading to and during the Indian occupation of Alcatraz Island of 1969-1971. While scholars have used the occupation as an example of the changing trajectory of American Indian activism in the late 20th century, especially in regards to the American Indian Movement and Red Power Movement, the event is rarely examined on its own terms. This thesis seeks to fill that gap, focusing on concrete community building initiatives both on and around the island between 1964 and 1971. In doing so, it argues that Alcatraz was not only a symbolic space of Indian freedom, but also a physical place where Indians’ lives were changed, and Indians’ futures were informed. The thesis brings to bear significant archival research from the National Parks Service Records and Collections, public collections in San Francisco, CA, where many occupiers have preserved their occupation accounts and photographs. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Many have lent their voices to this project throughout its duration. Subaltern Resistance and Wounded Knee, 1973 Nathan Sell American Indian resistance to Euro-American expansionism has long been considered under the purview of “American history.” This subsumption of indigenous perspectives within the limits and boundaries of an “American history” represents a, if not the, dominant raison d'être for considering indigenous histories in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. As such, indigenous history under this perspective is potentially seen as useful only in that it holds explanatory value in the context of an American history. COLONIZATION, MEDIATION, AND INTERPRETATION IN THE SUN DANCE CONTACT ZONE DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Sandra Garner, B.A., M.A. Graduate Program in Comparative Studies The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Lindsay Jones, Advisor Maurice Stevens Richard Shiels Copyright by Sandra Garner 2010 ABSTRACT This research project focuses on the Sun Dance, an Indigenous ritual particularly associated with Siouan people, as a site of cultural expression where multiple, often conflicting concerns, compete for hegemonic dominance. Since European contact the Sun Dance has been variously practiced, suppressed, reclaimed, revitalized, and transformed. It has also evoked strong sentiments both from those that sought to eradicate its practices as well as those who have sought its continuance. In spite of a period of intense colonial repression, during the last three decades the Siouan form of the Sun Dance has become one of the most widely practiced religious rituals from Indigenous North America and the number of Sun Dances held and the numbers of people participating has grown significantly. How has the Sun Dance ritual endured in spite of a lengthy history of repression? What is it about the Sun Dance that evokes such powerful sentiments? And, how do we account for the growth of the Sun Dance. I argue that the current growth and practice of the Sun Dance must be considered within the context of colonialism; a central focus of this dissertation. I identify the complex and messy ways that individuals mediate the inequitable power relations that shape colonialist interactions, as well as the way they interpret these social spaces. -

YAVAPAI PHONOLOGY AND DICTIONARY by Alan Shaterian ABSTRACT This work will preserve the fundamental facts about the Yavapai language, the most evanescent of the Pai group of Yuman languages, a linguistic family which in its vari ety of members and geographic distribution is analagous to the Germanic family as of five centuries ago. The dis sertation explores the relationship between the pattern of speech sounds and the shape of words in Yavapai. It de scribes the phonology, morphology, and a part of the lex icon in a format which is accessible to linguists of varied theoretical backgrounds. It is the speech of Chief Grace Jimulla Mitchell (1903-1976), a speaker of the Prescott subdialect of North eastern Yavapai, that forms the basis of the description. The research necessary for this undertaking was spon sored in part by the Survey of California and Other Indian Languages at the University of California at Berkeley. Interrogating Colonial Legacies: Jeffrey Gibson’s Indigenous Futurism Mariah Ribeiro, Art History Faculty Mentor: Ken Allan, PhD Faculty Content Editor: Ken Allan, PhD Student Editor: Michael Pazen 119 Abstract In recent decades, post-colonial theory has allowed for scholars to re-contextualize American history, challenging the mythic narrative of the founding and settlement of the United States. This awareness of settler colonialism’s effect on every aspect of society calls for widespread accountability towards dismantling colonial legacies within the Americas. Such a shift in understanding has inherent consequences for the arts, raising the question: how do visual arts and their institutions function within the settler-colonial context of NorthAmerica? As the subjects of ongoing settler-colonialism, Native American artists are uniquely positioned to participate in the dismantlement of the colonial legacy of art museums. Accordingly, this essay examines how contemporary indigenous artists lead the post-colonial interrogation of the art museum by challenging Western art conventions, the colonial legacy of North America, and the assumptions of non-Native viewers through their art. -

SPECIAL DIABETES PROJECT-RECREATION PROGRAM SDP-REC FACILITIES The goal of the CRIT SDP-REC Program is to increase physi- cal activity among Native Americans enrolled in a federal recognized tribe living within the boundaries of the CRIT Building 1 Building 2 Irataba Hall reservation to prevent diabetes and to help individuals manage their diabetes with exercise. The Program has three facilities that include two workout centers and a gymnasium. These facilities feature 25 cardio machines, 40 strength training machines, and a gymnasium for team sports. Individuals receive fitness and exercise education from certified Fitness Instructors as well as nutrition and diabetes education from our Community Health Educator. COLORADO RIVER INDIAN TRIBES The Colorado River Indian Tribes is a geo-political unit consisting of the four distinct tribes associated with the Colorado River Indian Reservation: NUTRITION EDUCATION Chemehuevi, Mohave, Hopi, and Navajo.
