A group of 10 of us from the IBCC, including Michelle Rolfe and her friend, Bev, Kay Dougall, Kay Whitmarsh, Sue Evans, Kathie Seideman, Becky Nich- ols, Sandi Long, Margaret Bell, and Liz Mills got togeth- er and had such a nice, relaxing afternoon: sipping tea, eating delicious food, and chatting about all different subject matters. We indulged in tea sandwiches, scones, crumpets, clotted creams, jams, lemon curd, lemon squares, tarts, and, of course, tea. Oh my, so much food, but it was all wonderful!. It was so fun to spend time getting to know each other better; often the club coffees are busy and we don’t al- ways get to visit with everyone. We discovered there is a love of books, adventures (skiing, zip lining, roller coasters, jumping out of a plane, traveling, etc), and there are those that are happy to keep their feet on the ground! And, of course, there is a love of Little British Cars! Thank you to Margaret Bell for hosting this event! Thanks to Sandi Long for organizing the tea and making so much food! I (Margaret) would also like to thank Becky Nichols for the pretty party favors (I admit I ate the chocolate already) and Sandi for making book- marks! So make a note to yourself for next year! Don’t miss the Ladies’ Tea. We don’t know who will host it or where it will take place, but it really is a great treat to spend time with friends, new and old, and just relax and enjoying this fabulous British custom. Oh, and if any of you run into Bill Dougall at a coffee, ask him about his Flymo! ~ Margaret Bell & Liz Mills S P O K E ‘n’ W O R D Page 5 COFFEE HAPPENINGS COFFEE TIME NAMES DRAWN September 1: Bill & Anita Siewert’s names were drawn, but were not there to win the $15. September 15: A small group of members met for coffee Saturday morning. Since there wasn’t the “official” box of names, it was decided to put all our name tags in a large cup and then have someone pull out one to determine a winner. A name was drawn, the person was there, but since they didn’t have their name tag on, $5.00 goes into the pot for the next draw- ing! Next drawing in October will be for $25.00.

  • 1992 Daimler DS420 Limousine the Last DS420 and the Last Car with an XK Engine
1992 Daimler DS420 Limousine The last DS420 and the last car with an XK engine The long line of Daimler limousines finally came to an end in 1992 with this car, the last example of the DS420 range. It was also the last car to use the 44-year old Jaguar XK engine design When Jaguar merged with the British Motor Corporation in 1966, both companies manufactured limousine models, the ageing Daimler Majestic Major and Vanden Plas Princess 4 litre. It was decided to replace both of these older models with a single new limousine, which would bear the Daimler name and would be based on Jaguar components, but which would be assembled in the Vanden Plas factory at Kingsbury in London. The result was the DS420 which was launched in 1968 and co-incidentally became the first new model of the newly-merged British Leyland company. It was based on an extended floorpan from the Jaguar 420G, which made the DS420 the biggest ever British car with unitary body construction. The engine was the well-known Jaguar XK in 4.2 litre form, with an automatic gearbox as standard. The semi- razor edge style of the body was probably inspired by some of the classic Hooper bodies on Daimler chassis The basic bodyshell was supplied by Motor Panels in Coventry and mechanical components were fitted by Jaguar at Browns Lane, before the limousines were sent to Vanden Plas for final assembly and trim. When the Vanden Plas factory closed in 1979, final assembly and trim moved back to a special Limousine Shop in the Jaguar factory at Browns Lane The DS420 enjoyed a near monopoly of its market, and many were also supplied in chassis form for hearse bodywork.
