Mothers on Mothers: Maternal Readings of Popular Television
From Supernanny to Gilmore Girls, from Katie Price to Holly Willoughby, a MOTHERS ON wide range of examples of mothers and motherhood appear on television today. Drawing on questionnaires completed by mothers across the UK, this MOTHERS ON MOTHERS book sheds new light on the varied and diverse ways in which expectant, new MATERNAL READINGS OF POPULAR TELEVISION and existing mothers make sense of popular representations of motherhood on television. The volume examines the ways in which these women find pleasure, empowerment, escapist fantasy, displeasure and frustration in popular depictions of motherhood. The research seeks to present the MATERNAL READINGS OF POPULAR TELEVISION voice of the maternal audience and, as such, it takes as its starting REBECCA FEASEY point those maternal depictions and motherwork representations that are highlighted by this demographic, including figures such as Tess Daly and Katie Hopkins and programmes like TeenMom and Kirstie Allsopp’s oeuvre. Rebecca Feasey is Senior Lecturer in Film and Media Communications at Bath Spa University. THE SUNDAY TIMES SCHOOLS GUIDE Northern Ireland State Secondary School of the Year
THE SUNDAY TIMES SCHOOLS GUIDE Northern Ireland State Secondary School of the Year Strathearn School By Sue Leonard Principal David Manning has worked at Strathearn School since 1989 but is still finding his way around the refurbished teaching block. Boasting 23 classrooms and eight science labs, it opened earlier this month, the first phase of a £16m rebuilding programme. The redevelopment allows the school to bring departments together and provide more modern facilities for the 770 pupils and has come after a 14 year wait. Not that this or 18 months (so far) of construction work has had any detrimental effect on the academic performance of this impressive Belfast voluntary girls’ grammar school, one of Northern Ireland’s top performers. Strathearn produced an outstanding performance in our leagues table this year, moving 36 places from 97th in the UK in 2011 to 62st on the strength of very strong A-level results. This summer the school’s best ever exam results saw 81.6% of A-level entries gain A* - B grades while 63.5% of GCSE papers achieved an A* or A. Strathearn School, Our Northern Ireland State Secondary School of the Year, now ranks third in the province behind Lumen Christi College and Friend’s School, Lisburn, both previous winners of our award. It was 10th last year. “Schools are more than buildings” says Mr Manning, whose “outstanding leadership” was praised in a glowing report by school inspectors. “It is about the atmosphere in the school. The relationship between the school and pupils is at the heart of the school”. -
Sir Gary Joins Stellar Line-Up to Boost Business in Yorkshire
Friday 2nd June 2017 Sir Gary joins stellar line-up to boost business in Yorkshire Sir Gary Verity will speak alongside UK business icon Baroness Karren Brady CBE and BBC World Affairs Editor John Simpson CBE at a new networking event in Yorkshire. The Business Day at Bridlington Spa on Friday, June 9 - hosted by presenter, comedian and actor Alexander Armstrong - aims to boost business across the region and inspire new ideas. It is the first time Bridlington Spa has held such a high-profile business networking day and it is set to become an annual event, giving Yorkshire delegates an invaluable opportunity to gain insight into the local and national economy. The whole venue will be dedicated to The Business Day with room for more than 650 delegates. Keynote speeches by Sir Gary, Baroness Brady and John Simpson will be delivered from the impressive Spa Theatre stage, while exhibitors and sponsors will be in the Royal Hall. Breakout sessions throughout the day will give delegates a chance to get to know each other. Sir Gary will talk about the part he plays in showcasing the county’s thriving tourist economy on a global scale. Since joining Welcome to Yorkshire in 2008, he has increased the county’s profile on a regional, national and international level. He has built on the success of the 2014 Tour de France Grand Départ with the annual Tour de Yorkshire international stage race, broadcast in 180 countries worldwide and attracting millions of roadside spectators. In April this year, he was awarded a top honour by the French Government, a chevalier medal in the Ordre National du Mérite. -

Linden Disney-Hogg Audience vote Judges’ comments Presentation of Prizes Abstract Prize The Lawrence Room Prize Audience Prize Judges’ Prize Abstracts 1) Kevan DeCuypere The Tate Modern and Cildo Meireles’ Babel It is not possible to discuss ‘pioneering’ without evoking an historical sense of time, since a pioneer is commonly described as ‘[a] person who goes before others to prepare or open up the way,’ or as ‘an innovator’. Both of these possibilities imply the genesis of something new, and posit pioneers as the heralds of productive interventions that steer the flow of time, in a gradual but steady accretion of influences, ever forward. My presentation will engage with Cildo Meireles’ sculpture Babel, currently on display in the Tate Modern, to cast this implied historical gaze backwards and examine the darker, less frequently recalled (and seldom anticipated) consequences of innovation and pioneering. Meireles’ sculpture references the biblical story of an incomplete tower, collaboratively-built by a human species united in one language, nearly tall enough to reach the heavens. Offended by this act of hubris, God confused the peoples with different languages and ‘scattered them all over the earth’ to foil the tower’s construction and to slow human progress. While God’s linguistic trick succeeds in this endeavour, the confusion that ensues becomes the source all the world’s conflict. -

With reference to feminist critiques of neoliberal feminism I find that women challenged the perception of football as a sexist industry while acknowledging gender inequalities in football leadership. Women also made sense of their own success through the neoliberal rhetoric of hard work but also acknowledged that success was uneven for different women and so sought to remove barriers for other women through ‘quiet resistance’. In order to resolve these contradictions, women leaders swung back and forth between making gender invisible through neoliberal discourses and making gender matter through feminist discourses. -
