Westminster Enterprise Week 2016

More than half the young people in the UK aged 16 to 24 wish to start their own business. In Westminster, those leaving school and university benefit from a world class enterprise landscape on their doorstep.

The second annual Westminster Enterprise Week (WEW) will engage students from local schools and colleges throughout an exciting week of events, designed to inspire and promote enterprise in the heart of London:

Bright Ideas Trust Workshops and Westminster Enterprise Week Launch

Bright Ideas Trust was set up by Tim Campbell (the winner of the first series of BBC TV’s “The Apprentice”) in 2007. They provide comprehensive training and mentoring, helping young people between the ages of 16-30 achieve their dream of creating their own successful business. Learn more at brightideastrust.com

WEW Event Westminster Enterprise Week will kick off on with an Ignition Session, intended to inspire fresh new ideas, provided by Tim Campbell and Margaret Mountford of the BBC’s The Apprentice. After the session, students will be taking part in workshops focused on business planning and digital marketing. Throughout the morning, participants will also have the opportunity to present their business ideas to Margaret and Tim, for a chance to win a prize for the best pitch.

Following the workshops, WEW 2016 will be officially launched. Inspirational key note speeches will be followed by the revelation of the winner of the best business pitch and an hour of networking activities, giving students a chance to ask questions to representatives from Westminster’s business community.

Prince’s Trust Drop in Sessions

Founded in 1976 by his Royal Highness Prince Charles, Prince’s Trust is a charity dedicated to improving the lives of disadvantaged young people in the UK, helping people aged 13 to 30 get into jobs, education and training. WEW Event An opportunity for students to drop in and speak to a Prince’s Trust ambassador, including James Fleury, founder of music marketing agency Nouvage, to discuss their business ideas.

Impact Hub Westminster

Impact Hub Westminster is one of the largest of a global network of locally owned collaborative working spaces. The primary aim is to support organisations to encompass positive social and environmental impact at the heart of their missions. WEW Events

 Inside my impact – A talk from social entrepreneur Duncan Goose, Founder and CEO of Global Limited, The One Brand and The One Foundation. The One Foundation donates profits from the One brand to fund clean water projects in some of the harshest regions of Africa.  Tour and presentation – A tour of the co-working space along with PPP tailored to student’s knowledge and experience including an introduction to social entrepreneurship and enterprises.  Impact tea – A high tea served to assist students through networking with Impact Hub entrepreneurs.

Land Securities Urban Plan Challenge

Land Securities are the largest commercial property company in the UK, managing more than 26 million square feet of property. Land Securities’ Urban Plan programme, a fully funded education programme for sixth form students, brings the built environment to life through workshops and team working challenges around regeneration of urban sites. Makerversity Studios Tours

Makerversity is a pioneering community of emerging maker businesses. At Somerset House, their headquarters in Central London, though now established in Amsterdam, they are kick-starting the third industrial revolution. Makerversity provide access to a range of studio, event and fabrication spaces and prototyping tools for our diverse member businesses. Learn more at makerversity.org

WEW Event Makerversity will provide two guided tours around their studios and offer students the chance to ask questions to the entrepreneurs working there regarding their business and any advice they can offer.

Business Information Points Tours and Master Classes

Westminster City Council has four Business Information Points (BIPs) situated within libraries across the city. The BIPs offer a number of resources to entrepreneurs and start-ups, including books, journals, access to online databases, free Wi-Fi, events and networking. WEW Event Church Street and Westminster Reference libraries will visit schools and deliver master classes held by social media and marketing consultant Amber Raney-Kincade. Pimlico and Paddington libraries will hold assemblies and guided tours with guest speakers Samantha Hornsby, Co-Founder of LY Productions & ERIC Festival, and Maria Stammer from Padding Development Trust.

Maida Hill Place Workshops

Maida Hill Place is a social enterprise located in the heart of North Westminster encouraging food entrepreneurship. The hub supports the start-up and development of London’s food enterprises, making it easy for small businesses to test a business concept without the overheads standalone businesses would incur. Careers and Apprenticeships Fair at City of Westminster College

WEW Event A Careers and Apprenticeship fair where students can meet face-to-face with employers to discuss what qualities they are looking for in an employee. The event will also be an opportunity to meet apprenticeship providers, as well as organisations which can help students build a career through self-employment.

The FutureProof Foundation “#BritGirlsInBusiness” Millennial Changemakers event

The FutureProof Foundation is a non-profit organisation empowering young women to become the UK’s future business leaders. It was created in Westminster by social entrepreneur Charlene Laidley, UN Women Ambassador and recipient of the 2016 Impacthub Scholarship. Learn more at futureprooffoundation.org

WEW Event Seven high profile female millennial entrepreneurs ‘making it happen’ around the globe will speak at WEW’s first event dedicated to supporting female entrepreneurship, sharing their entrepreneurship journey. There will be an opportunity for Q&A followed by speed-dating and networking.

Somerset House Tour

Somerset House Trust aims to make Somerset House a place of inspiration; a distinctive platform for London showing great examples of the visual and performing arts and providing opportunities for everyone to participate. Somerset House Creative Hub is an experimental work-space for artists, makers and pioneers in the centre of London. WEW Event Students will have the opportunity to take part in a guided tour around Somerset House with the chance to meet the entrepreneurs working there. Students will also be able to show project work, receive industry feedback and participate in a Q&A session.

Enterprise Assemblies

As part of Westminster Enterprise Week, schools in Westminster have the opportunity to receive a guest visit from an inspirational entrepreneur to attend and speak at a school assembly. These talks will be dedicated to the theme of entrepreneurship. The assemblies will also raise awareness of self-employment, and the speakers will be able to share their experiences with large groups of young people.
