  • SEAD MIRROR – Edition 4 Talk Series Insight: Faculty Speak- Ar
SRM INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL OF ENVIRONMENT ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN SEAD MIRROR – Edition 4 Talk Series Mr M Annamalai is a leading structural engineers, having completed many projects all over India. He has frequently tied up with Larsen and Toubro and has been the structural consultant for many hotels and resorts including Woodlands. Being a visiting faculty in many leading architecture colleges, he had delivered plenty of guest lectures as well. Students of IV year were fortunate to receive a guest lecture delivered by him on the topic of Basics of Earthquake resistant architecture with a brief of structural detailing and earthquake resistant techniques for buildings. The lecture covered aseismic technology, their working and performance levels and relevant building codes in the field. Insight: Faculty Speak- Ar. Shanthini Q: Formulating concepts is still a hurdle for many architects and architecture students and the infamous ‘creative block’ has become a common phenomenon within the fraternity. What do you suggest one can do to tackle this? A: Yes, it is difficult to overcome the ‘creative block’. I consult the masters to overcome it. I look to the masters of architecture at varying scales for inspiration. Borrow their ideas, their concepts, even just to test them on the problem at hand. We have been taught in our schools to conduct precedent research before designing. Practicing this is even in our professional life can spark a fresh approach to the design process. Q: Do you often notice a “trend” in design approaches among your students or is there always a variety? What do you do to produce variety in approaches in the studio? A: Visual exposure is the best tested tool.

  • The Hindu'saugust 15, 1947 Issue
COLLECTOR'S EDITION The Hindu’s August 15, 1947 issue From its birth as a weekly in September 1878, The Hindu became a powerful instrument of the Indian national movement that sought to overthrow British rule. It was hence tting that when freedom dawned, The Hindu welcomed it with characteristic aplomb, deep thought, and skillful penmanship. The Hindu's edition on August 15, 1947, along with a 32-page supplement, was a tribute to the freedom struggle, with articles by some of the greatest names of that age including V.K. Krishna Menon, India’s rst woman legislator Muthulakshmi Reddi, and the great educationist K.M. Munshi. It also carried striking images of the arrival of Independence, and riveting news from that tempestuous time. The Hindu's leading article on the historic day was characteristically pithy and powerful. Titled "Red letter day'', it said: "By the grace of Providence India enters the comity of free nations today, an equal among equals. It is an occasion for rejoicing not only for her people but for all who value human freedom as an end in itself. So long as this country with her hoary civilisation and many-sided culture, her wealth of resources and matchless opulence of spirit remained in political bondage, that very fact constituted an implicit denial of those values to which the dominant nations of the West were wont to pay lip service." Now, we are proud to share with our loyal subscribers, those very pages, articles, and images from which our readers got to know about the advent of freedom on August 15, 1947.

  • Indo Saracenic Architecture in Chennai
Session – II Indo Saracenic Architecture in Channai Prof. George J.Jeyaraj, B.Arch., M.A. (History), M.Phil., F.I.I.A., Hindustan University, Chennai. INTRODUCTION This study is made to pictorially analyse and understand the application of the Architectural Features of the ISLAMIC, HINDU, BYZANTINE styles into the INDO- SARACENIC Buildings designed and built during the British Colonial period in Chennai (Madas) City. Indo-Saracenic architecture represents a synthesis of Islamic designs and Indian materials developed by British architects in India during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The hybrid, combined diverse architectural elements of Hindu and Mughal with cusped arches, domes, spires, tracery, minarets and stained glass, in a wonderful, almost playful manner. Robert Fellowes Chisholm (1840-1915), Henry Irwin and Gilbert Scott were among the leading practitioners, of architecture of that time. Chisholm, one of the most gifted English architects who worked in India and a vehement supporter of Indian craftsmen said about them as, “the men who will actually leave the impress of their hands on the material”. These men have an art language of their own, a language which you can recognize but cannot thoroughly understand. For this reason an architect practicing in India should unhesitatingly select to practice in the native styles of art - indeed the natural art-expression of the men is the only art to be obtained in the country.” Chisholm was the Principal of the School of Industrial Art at Madras, and won the commission for designing the Presidency College and the University Senate House. lndo-saracenic architecture found its way into public buildings of all sorts such as railway stations, banks and insurance buildings, educational institutions, clubs and museums.
