McDermott Introduction By the mid-1970’s, many fans of the “Golden Age” of comic books had grown up to become writers and ultimately editors for the comics publishers, sometimes setting the nar- rative histories for their favorite childhood characters themselves. Many of these fans-turned- pro produced comics series that attempted to recapture the Golden Age’s excitement, patriotic fervor and whiz-bang attitude. The most successful of these titles were produced by Roy Thomas, who fashioned a coherent history of costumed heroes during World War II, and rec- onciled the wildly inconsistent stories of the 1940’s with tightly patrolled continuity initiated with the “Silver Age” of the 1960’s. With The Invaders (1975-1979), Thomas focused on the hitherto unrevealed wartime exploits of Marvel Comics’ early mainstays Captain America, the Human Torch, and Prince Namor, the Sub-Mariner. In 1980, he moved to DC Comics and launched All-Star Squadron, which juggled the histories of the Justice Society of Amer- ica and nearly a hundred secondary characters.

India is set to become the most populous country in the world by 2022 and also the youngest country with an average age of 29 by 2020. With such important shifts for our country right around the corner, it is imperative for us to continuously develop and advance in the right direction. As responsible citizens, it is our duty to ensure that India in not led astray from this goal. However, the recent past shows otherwise with ‘brain drain’ leading out the resourceful and talented people, something which is obstructing this desired development that our country needs. ‘Brain Drain’ is essentially the migration of high- PM Narendra Modi being greeted by Indians at NASA. skilled labour from developing countries to developed have sky rocketed where even a mark can make the countries. Jimmie Killingsworth May 2010 Major Subject: English iii ABSTRACT Ethical Desire: Betrayal in Contemporary British Fiction. (May 2010) Soo Yeon Kim, B.A., Seoul National University; M.A., Seoul National University Chair of Advisory Committee: Dr. David McWhirter This dissertation investigates representations of betrayal in works by Hanif Kureishi, Salman Rushdie, Irvine Welsh, and Alan Hollinghurst. In rethinking “bad” acts of betrayal as embodying an ethical desire not for the good but for “the better,” this dissertation challenges the simplistic good/bad binary as mandated by neo-imperialist, late capitalist, and heteronormative society. In doing so, my project intervenes in the current paradigm of ethical literary criticism, whose focus on the canon and the universal Good gained from it runs a risk of underwriting moral majoritarianism and judgmentalism. I argue that some contemporary narratives of betrayal open up onto a new ethic, insofar as they reveal the unethical totalization assumed in ethical literary criticism’s pursuit of the normative Good.

While the military history of Archimedes' directed energy weapon remains in question, the painting illustrates how technological innovation translates into strategic latency.
