After the juvenile observer and the gangster mogul, Nas needed a new challenge for his third album. Now a muse for an uncompromisingly globalised rap, an heir to both Rakim and Whodini, Nas was hailed and booed in equal measure for his choices and his position. His career ran into trouble after his group The Firm proved a commercial and critical flop; as did his collaboration with Cormega, who was his main influence and link to the streets; and his ill-fated work with Dr. Dre. With this new, hotly-anticipated album, Nas aimed to re-impose himself as a widely- acclaimed genius. Revised and remodelled many times, I am was one one of the first albums to suffer enormously from piracy and successive leaks. Nas threw in the ultimate provocation, appearing on the sleeve as a Pharaoh, and as a Christian martyr with Puff Daddy, commercial rap's great demon of the day, on the controversial "". But, inviting legends Scarface, DMX and Aliyaah, he survived the decimation of the icons of the day, and paid his respects to 2pac and Biggie on “We Will Survive”. Bearing the cross for his movement, Nas sometimes gets lost in a suit that's too big for him, with some cheap flash from and LES. But alongside these contradictions, we also see a return to good old habits, especially with DJ Premier on the iconic "NY State of Mind Part II" and above all "Nas is Like". As his urban hymns continue to resonate, Nas remains one of the greatest voices of his time. © Aurélien Chapuis/ Qobuz. Nas I Am Album Download Zip. Nas is one of hip-hop’s most respected MCs and he arguably has the most consistent discography to boot. He has been a compelling listen ever since his legendary debut in 1994, , to his most recent album produced by Kanye West. There is no doubt that Nas is one of the best rappers to ever grab a mic, but how many platinum albums does Nas actually have? 1. Illmatic (1994) The iconic cover for Nas' Illmatic album (1994) Despite rave reviews, Nas’s debut Illmatic had low sales and didn’t go gold until January 17, 1996. And it didn’t go platinum until December 11, 2001, but it’s had incredible longevity and stands at 1,686,000 sales to date. Until this day, it’s hailed as a masterpiece, citing its production (DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor) and Nas’ intricate lyricism. 2. It Was Written (1996) The grown up version of the Illmatic (cover) - 1996's It Was Written. Unlike Illmatic , his second LP It Was Written was a barn burner straight out of the gate, selling over 2,000,000 during its first three months after release. The album went to number 1 on the Billboard album charts and stayed there for four consecutive weeks. It also spurred three hit singles, but despite all this initial success, sales stalled at around 2,595,000. It Was Written stands as Nas’ best-selling album. 3. I Am… (1999) Nas' third album (cover), I Am. portrays Nas as a egyptian sphinx. I Am. was highly anticipated and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, selling over 470,000 copies in its first week of sales. It received generally favorable reviews upon release but was also criticized (like it’s predecessor) for being too commercial. It stands as Nas’ second best selling album with 2,178,00 in sales. 4. (1999) Nas' fourth album (cover)Nastradamus portrays Nas as the French "seer" Nostradamus. Despite being panned critically and generally considered Nas’ weakest effort, Nastradamus still debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 232,000 copies in its first week. It was certified platinum on December 22, 1999, less than a month after it dropped. 5. (2001) The cover for Nas' Stillmatic is definetely a classic. Stillmatic was considered a comeback album for Nas and it signified a return to Nas’ musical roots. It debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200 and sold an impressive 342,600 during its first week of sales. It stands as Nas’ third best selling album to date with 2,145,000 albums sold. 6. God’s Son (2002) The album cover for Nas' God's Son is simplistic yet memorable. This album was considered a positive progression inline with Stillmatic and it sold 156,000 copies during its first week. With a couple minor hit singles, it eventually went platinum on January 14, 2003. 7. Street’s Disciple (2004) The Street's Disciple cover portrays Nas as Jesus in The Last Supper. Street’s Disciple debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200, selling over 232,000 copies during its first week. It’s Nas’ last platinum album but it also marks the amazing feat of seven consecutive platinum albums with 1,448,000 copies sold. So how many platinum albums does Nas have? Nas has a total of seven (7) platinum albums! THE DJ COOP BLOGS. Whatever happened to that classic third album that Nas was supposed to drop? Perhaps your saying, "What are you talking about? I Am. is a classic!" But what you might not know is that the album we all know as I Am. was supposed to be much bigger than what it became. Nas originally planned to drop a double disk album entitled I Am. The Autobiography . He planned to narrate his life from his birth (Fetus), through childhood (Poppa was a Playa), to his eventual staged suicide (Undying Love). The second disk would follow him in the afterlife where he would return back to Earth as Nastradamus (Amongst Kings). However the recent introduction to mp3 bootlegging over the internet would soon crush Nas' wonderful creation which lead to releasing two mediocre albums. Not to say I Am. and Nastradamus were horrible, because they still were met with somewhat positive reviews and they contained several classic joints. (Nas is Like, Small World, We Will Survive, Life We Chose, Project Windows, and Come Get Me) They just were not at the same level as Illmatic and It Was Written . Nas' album was leaked onto the internet before its release. To combat against the widespread bootlegging, Nas removed a lot of tracks and decided to only release a single disk album called I Am. . He removed the autobiographical aspect of the album, eliminating tracks like Fetus and Poppa was a Playa. (Both were later released on 2002's The Lost Tapes ). I Am. dropped on April 6, 1999 and produced two singles - Nas is Like (March 2, 1999) and Hate Me Now ft. Puff Daddy (April 6, 1999). The album met with mixed to positive reviews, but it clearly was one of Nas' weaker efforts. Below is the final track list. 1. Album Intro 2. N.Y. State of Mind Pt. II 3. Hate Me Now (feat. Puff Daddy) 4. Small World 5. Favor For A Favor 6. We Will Survive 7. Ghetto Prisoners 8. You Won't See Me Tonight (feat. Aaliyah) 9. I Want To Talk To You 10. Dr. Knockboot 11. Life Is What You Make It (feat. DMX) 12. Big Things 13. Nas Is Like 14. K-I-S-S-I-N-G 15. Money Is My Bitch 16. Undying Love. Bonus Tracks (cassette version): Nas had to release the follow up to I Am. quickly with Columbia records that November. Nas decided to go back to the recording studio to produce new tracks for the next album instead of using all the leftover tracks which had mostly been leaked. Nastradamus was released a mere 221 days after I Am. on November 23, 1999. It met with commercial success but with mixed reviews. To this day, it is considered as Nas's weakest album. Only a few leftover tracks from I Am. made it to Nastradamus , namely Project Windows and Come Get Me. (These two are confirmed but there may be a few other leftover tracks) On Come Get Me, one of Nas' lines even confirms that it is an original I Am. track, The album produced two singles - Nastradamus (October 26, 1999) and You Owe Me (2000). Below is the final track listing. 1. The Prediction (feat. Jessica Care Moore) 2. Life We Chose 3. Nastradamus 4. Some Of Us Have Angels 5. Project Window (feat. Ronald Isley) 6. Come Get Me 7. Shoot 'Em Up 8. Last Words (feat. Millennium Thug aka Nashawn) 9. Family (feat. Mobb Deep) 10. God Love Us 11. Quiet Niggas (feat. ) 12. Big Girl 13. New World 14. You Owe Me (feat. Ginuwine) 15. The Outcome (feat. Jessica Care Moore) Bonus Tracks (Circuit City bonus): I researched online to find the original track list of what would have been the "classic" double disk album. I found out that 13 songs were passed around to radio DJs and reviewers. The Source magazine received this copy and praised the album giving it 4.5 out of 5 mics. (I'm trying to find a scan from The Source back in 99' to hopefully determine some of the validity of the track lists I will list below) I found that this 13 track promo was called Nas 2000 but is extremely hard to find. Several tracks from this leaked list was put on Nastradamus and a handful landed on The Lost Tapes in 2002. Many forums and blogs posted various track listings for the original I Am. The Autobiography album. Some showed lists for a single album, but many others had a complete list for two disks. The two disk track list is found on many sources online. The one listed below seems to be the most realistic, considering the first part involves the early part of Nas' life. In Undying Love, the last track on the retail I Am. , Nas stages his own suicide. In After Life and Amongst Kings, Nas finds himself in the afterlife leaving his body and asking God to have a second chance at life. His wishes are ultimately granted and comes back as Nastradamus. 1. Fetus (Belly Button Window) [The Lost Tapes] (Original Version - Youtube Link) 2. NY State Of Mind Pt. II [I am. ] 3. My Worst Enemy [Unreleased] (Youtube Link) However, this two disk track list contradicts the claim that only 13 songs were released onto the internet. Although many believe this is the legitimate double disk track list, the official listing was most likely never unveiled to the public and therefore is simply a product of speculation and fan creation. We still want to know exactly what the original 13 songs were which The Source and many others praised before the release. I went around and looked at the numerous posts made by people who claimed they had the original bootleg on their computer. Below is a list of 12 songs (Link) that seemed consistent with what many others have said throughout forums. Amongst Kings (Youtube Link) Blaze a 50 Find Ya Wealth Gotta Love It Drunk By Myself Wanna Play Rough (Youtube Link) Hardest Thing to Do Is Stay Alive (Youtube Link) Fetus (Original Version) (Youtube Link) The Game Lives On (Project Windows original version without Ronald Isley) (Youtube Link) Sometimes I Wonder (Youtube Link) Poppa Was A Playa Daydreamin, Stay Schemin (Youtube Link) This list contains absolutely nothing found on I Am. and the songs eventually made its way onto other CDs ( Nastradamus , The Lost Tapes , QB's Finest , Live on Lenox ) or remained unreleased. This makes sense, given the decision to release music on I Am. that was not leaked to the public. Nas most likely was forced (or decided) to take all the other tracks from the double disk that were never leaked and use them for the single CD. This led to a dissatisfying album, lacking cohesion and structure. When the record label needed Nas to quickly come up with the followup album, they probably wanted him to use some of the leaked tracks and/or other unreleased ones that didn't quite make the cut for the original two disk album. Seeing that I Am. was a disaster (with respect to his original plan), he decided to record new tracks instead. He probably thought that placing the leftover leaked tracks would produce a very inconsistent and unbalanced album, just like I Am. earlier that year. The final result was a rushed, poorly reviewed yet commercially successful album that further continued Nas' decline at the time. It is a shame that his autobiography never surfaced because it would have been a great album. Songs like Undying Love, which is a wonderfully written gem on I Am. , seem very misplaced and different to the overall tone of the album - radio friendly songs with several classics caught in the middle. However, if it was followed by his original concept with Amongst Kings and the many other unreleased gems, Nas' third album would have undoubtedly brought him back as Street's Disciple. We are lucky that a handful of these lost tapes resurfaced in The Lost Tapes in 2002. The remaining unreleased songs remain floating around online and in some popular mixtapes. Let's hope Nas decides to release some on his next Lost Tape collection. Speaking of which, whatever happened to The Curse?
