    St. Gregory the Illuminator Patron Saint of the Armenian Church (c. 257-c. 331) St. Gregory as one of the great missionaries of Christendom teaches us faith in God that is fueled with a Christian spirit of love and good works. Looking to St. Gregory as our example, we, too, can affect our world today. Gregory’s story is one of the most interesting in the annals of Christianity. With the arrival of the apostles, Thaddeus and Bartholomew, Christianity spread during the middle of the first century. The Armenian Christians were a small, scattered group. Nevertheless, they survived the persecutions of the first three centuries. Gregory’s early life and the account of the conversion of Armenia have been recorded by the historian, Agathangelos, who is traditionally known to have been King Tiridat’s secretary. In 238 AD, the King of Persia plotted to kill King Khosrov of Armenia. He recruited Anak, the father of Gregory, to do this wicked deed because Anak and Khosrov were cousins and the Armenian King would trust the would-be assassin. One day, while hunting, Anak killed Khosrov. Men loyal to the King pursued Anak and killed him, throwing his body into the river. The dying King gave orders to exterminate Anak’s family. Only one infant, Gregory, escaped from this slaughter. His Nanny speedily took him to safety to Cæsarea in Cappadocia. She was a converted Christian and thus raised her princely charge in the Christian faith and gave him a Greek name, Gregory. The boy became a fervent Christian, married a Christian named Mariam, whose brother was a well know missionary bishop, confessor and martyr.

    Title Page Religious Nationalism as an Explanation for the Destruction and Appropriation of Armenian Ecclesiastical Cultural Heritage Sites within the Republic of Georgia John Guidon Submitted to Central European University Nationalism Studies Program In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Masters of Arts Supervisor: Professor András László Pap Budapest, Hungary 2019 CEU eTD Collection 1 Abstract In the years immediately following its independence from the Soviet Union, Georgia constructed one of the largest religious buildings in the world, the Sameba Cathedral. However, the cathedral was not constructed on an unassuming, vacant patch of land in the capital of Tbilisi, but on the site of a 17th century Armenian cemetery. Similarly, in 2017, the crumbling Tandoyants Armenian Church in Tbilisi was gifted to the Georgian Orthodox Church with plans to raze the church and build a Georgian Orthodox Church in its place. These are just several of the most recent and well known cases of erasure of Armenian church history in Georgia. Approximately eighty Armenian churches in Georgia were destroyed during Georgia’s time as a member of the Soviet Union, but after freedom was attained in 1991 the policy towards these Armenian churches shifted to a new direction: appropriation. This appropriation and destruction of Armenian cultural heritage sites in Georgia is the direct result of a uniquely religious form of nationalism that exists in Georgia, and it has allowed for the creation the environment in which this cultural destruction has occurred. The St. John Music Guild opened its third season with the internationally acclaimed Sima Trio of New York on Sunday, October 26. The Trio includes three incredibly gifted Armenian musicians: Cellist Ani Kalayjian, pianist Sofya Melikyan and violinist Sami Merdinian. They played to a full house and a very appreciative audience at St. John’s Cultural Hall. The program was selected by the Trio to reach the heart and soul of the primarily Armenian audience in an Armenian venue. Featured composers included Alan Hovhaness, Arno Babadjanian and Gayaneh Tchebodarian as well as Josef Haydn. Speaking from the stage for the Sima Trio, Ani Kalayjian expressed to the audience their joy and anticipation of performing at St. John Armenian Church in metro Detroit. Their talent and sincerity was apparent in their performance and the audience was visibly moved. With this concert the Music Guild initiated a new concept; that of inviting an accomplished student musician to perform. With the approval of the performing artists the student chosen was Michael Randall Hawes who is pursuing a Master’s Degree in both Trumpet and Voice at Northwestern University.
