The Matrix as an Introduction to Mathematics Abstract In my classes on the nature of scientific thought, I have often used the movie The Matrix (1999) to illustrate how evidence shapes the reality we perceive (or think we perceive). As a mathematician and self-confessed science fiction fan, I usually field questionselated r to the movie whenever the subject of linear algebra arises, since this field is the study of matrices and their properties. So it is natural to ask, why does the movie title reference a mathematical object? Of course, there are many possible explanations for this, each of which probably contributed a little to the naming decision.

McGrath Abstract The movie The Matrix and its sequels draw explicitly on imagery from a number of sources, including in particular Buddhism, Christianity, and the writings of Jean Baudrillard. A perspective is offered on the perennial philosophical question ‘What is real?’, using language and symbols drawn from three seemingly incompatible world views. In doing so, these movies provide us with an insight into the way popular culture makes eclectic use of various streams of thought to fashion a new reality that is not unrelated to, and yet is nonetheless distinct from, its religious and philosophical undercurrents and underpinnings.

Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans.

In The Matrix trilogy, however, the Christ figure motif goes beyond superficial plot enhancements and forms the fundamental core of the three-part story. Neo's messianic growth (in self-awareness and power) and his eventual bringing of peace and salvation to humanity form the essential plot of the trilogy. Without the messianic imagery, there could still be a story about the human struggle in the Matrix, of course, but it would be a radically different story than that presented on the screen.     RBSE 8(24): 524-621, Dez2009 ISSN 1676-8965 ARTIGO A Symbolic Analysis of Ritualistic Crime: The Forensics of Sacrifice 1 Dawn Perlmutter Resumo: O assassinato ritual inclui uma grande variedade de atos sagrados e temporais cometidos por grupos e por indivíduos e é atribuído o mais frequentemente aos praticantes de ideologias ocultas tais como o Satanismo, o Palo Mayombe, a Santeria e outras tradições mágicas, ou aos assassinos em série e aos sadistas sexuais que assassinam ritualmente as suas vítimas. Devido a muitas controvérsias legais, práticas e éticas o estudo da violência religiosa contemporânea está em sua infância. Não houve nenhum estudo empírico sério dos crimes ou das classificações ritualísticas que distingam adequadamente entre os homicídios rituais cometidos para sagrado versus motivações temporais. Este artigo é o resultado de minha pesquisa na fenomenologia da adoração da imagem, de rituais contemporâneos do sangue, e da violência sagrada. Reflete meu esforço contínuo para proteger as liberdades religiosas de membros de religiões alternativas ao ajudar profissionais da lei de lei na investigação de crimes ritualísticos. Abstract : Ritual murder includes a wide variety of both sacred and secular acts committed by groups and individuals and is most often attributed to practitioners of occult ideologies such as Satanism, Palo Mayombe, Santeria, and other magical traditions, or to serial killers and sexual sadists who ritually murder their victims. Due to many legal, practical, and ethical controversies the study of contemporary religious violence is in its infancy. There have been no serious empirical studies of ritualistic crimes or classifications that adequately distinguish between ritual homicides committed for sacred versus secular motivations.

A través de un análisis fílmico de la serie The X-Files, I want to believe, planteamos como objetivo revelar como el tópico de la conspiración, en un nivel superficial, es un articulador de la trama de la serie, pero en un nivel profundo y amplio entendemos la conspiración como una estrategia articuladora de la vida moderna y, en este marco, del control biopolítico.
