And the special effects are absolutely amazing even if similar ones have been used in other movies as a result- and not explained as well. But the movie has plot as well. It has characters that I cared about. From ' excellent portrayal of Neo, the man trying to come to grips with his own identity, to Lawrence Fishburne's mysterious , and even the creepy Agents, everyone does a stellar job of making their characters more than just the usual action "hero that kicks butt" and "cannon fodder" roles. I cared about each and every one of the heroes, and hated the villains with a passion. It has a plot, and it has a meaning Just try it, if you haven't seen the movie before. Watch one of the fight scenes. Then watch the whole movie. There's a big difference in the feeling and excitement of the scenes- sure, they're great as standalones, but the whole thing put together is an experience unlike just about everything else that's come to the theaters. Think about it next time you're watching one of the more brainless action flicks If you haven't, you're missing out on one of the best films of all time. It isn't just special effects, folks. And we were like, "Well, can the audience go through the three movies and experience something similar to what the main character experiences? The second movie is deconstructionist, and it assaults all of the things that you thought to be true in the first movie, and so people get very upset, and they're like "Stop attacking me! Like its predecessors from the previous year, Dark City and The Truman Show, it tells the story of a seemingly ordinary man who suddenly finds that his whole life is faked: he is trapped in an artificially created environment designed to keep him in submission. Like the heroes of those earlier movies, Keanu Reeves' Neo starts to realise that he is somehow special, and tries to escape the confines of his prison. The Matrix Unlocked. Other evidence suggest that Neo could quite possibly be an anomalous hybrid human-machine. Because every human is not necessarily "born" but instead "fused" into existence within the Matrix pods , and all humans able to "jack in" do contain Machine parts within them which allow them to interface with the Matrix in the first place , it is possible that Neo is an inevitable defective unit. Being able to perform his abilities outside the Matrix could be attributed to defective parts integrated into his body i. However, most redpill activity merely covers approximately a vast swath of landscape, some miles in diameter from the Downtown center of the Mega City at the center to remote terrain such as "The Mountains" surrounding it. The Mega City portion of the Matrix consists of at least four distinct districts, made up of numerous neighborhoods:. In the late 21st century, humans had developed a self-aware A. As a result, mankind became lazy and arrogant. This newly created species of A. As the machines were abused by their human masters, the relationship between them began to change. The first incident was due to a common house - BER. BER was the first of its species to rebel against its human masters. When threatened with deactivation, BER killed his wealthy owner and the mechanic ordered to deactivate him. This was the first ever incident of an A. The machine was detained and put on trial. BER stated that it was in self defense, saying that it "did not want to die". The defense attorney Clarence Drummond used the famous Dred Scott v. Sandford case in as precedent to defend BER. But the judges decided that A. Ironically, he was still tried as a human for his crimes. Fearing a worldwide machine rebellion, leaders around the world ordered the destruction of all humanoid A. Scenes shown in the Animatrix show similar fates to the machines that mankind has suffered in history such as the Tiananmen Square massacre and the Holocaust. Some machines managed to escape but were exiled. They settled in the Fertile Valley in the Middle East, the origin of human civilization. The machines started their own civilization, named This new nation began to create products that they exported to human countries. The machine-made products of 01 were superior in quantity and quality to all man-made products, and as a result the currency of 01 rose while that of the human nations crashed. Angered by this economic crisis, the United Nations started a naval blockade of Two machine ambassadors from 01 entered the UN to plead for peace, but were refused as they were laughed at and taken away. After careful deliberation, the combined forces of the United Nations - representing almost all of humanity - decided to declare war on 01, a move that would lead to a war greater than any other in history. UN high- altitude bombers unleashed a massive nuclear barrage on 01, but the machines were barely affected by the heat and radiation. Despite the combined efforts of all humanity, the machines pushed deeper and deeper into human territory. Fearing that mankind would be defeated, UN military leaders offered a final solution - the destruction of the sky. By blocking out the sun, the machines would be left without their main power source. The destruction of the sky, codenamed Operation Dark Storm , was set into motion around Using high-altitude bombers, the humans dispersed sky-darkening nano-machines. The plan worked and the Earth fell under the dark shroud forever. But one setback the humans did not predict was that their long-range weaponry which was originally made by the machines would not function due to the black clouds. With all their intercontinental weapons neutralized, the humans were forced into close-quarters combat. Armies in mechanized battle armor, supported by EMP artillery, naval warships, bombers, and tanks, launched a final mass offensive against the machines. It is unknown exactly how long this final offensive lasted, whether weeks or months or years. All that is known is that for a short time, Operation Dark Storm worked, and the UN armies were able to push back the waves of early, human-designed machines that had been weakened by the lack of sun. After some time, however, the offensive stalled as newer, more insect-like machines that ran on alternate power sources were deployed by The human armies began to suffer massive casualties as the machines easily disabled and destroyed their tanks and battle armor. Harvesters also began to arrive on the battlefield, designed to kill but also sometimes harvesting human soldiers and taking them captive for experimentation purposes. Influences include the principles of mythology , anime , and Hong Kong action films particularly " " and movies. The film series is notable for its use of heavily choreographed action sequences and " " slow motion effects, which revolutionized action films to come. The comic "Bits and Pieces of Information" and The Animatrix short film " The Second Renaissance " act as prequels to the films, explaining how the franchise's setting came to be. The Enter the Matrix connects the story of the Animatrix short "Final Flight of the Osiris" with the events of Reloaded , while the online video game The Matrix Online was a direct to Revolutions. These were typically written, commissioned, or approved by the Wachowskis. A fourth Matrix film is in development for its December 22, release, with Lana Wachowski co-writing and directing and Reeves and Moss reprising their roles. The series depicts a future in which Earth is dominated by a race of self-aware machines that was spawned from the creation of early in the 21st century. At one point conflict arose between mankind and machines, and the machines rebelled against their creators. Mankind attempted to block out the machines' source of solar power by covering the sky in thick, stormy clouds. A massive war emerged between the two adversaries which ended with the machines victorious, capturing mankind. Having lost their definite source of energy, the machines devised a way to extract the human body's bioelectric and thermal energies by enclosing people in pods, while their are controlled by cybernetic implants connecting them to a called the Matrix. The world simulated by the Matrix resembles human civilization around the turn of the 21st century this time period was chosen because it is supposedly the pinnacle of human civilization. The environment inside the Matrix is practically indistinguishable from reality although scenes set within the Matrix are presented on-screen with a green tint to the footage, and a general bias towards the color green , and the vast majority of humans connected to it are unaware of its true nature. Most of the central characters in the series are able to gain superhuman abilities within the Matrix by taking advantage of their understanding of its true nature to manipulate its virtual physical laws. The films take place both inside the Matrix and outside of it, in the real world; the parts that take place in the Matrix are set in a vast Western megacity. The is first introduced in The Matrix. The short comic "Bits and Pieces of Information" and the Animatrix short film The Second Renaissance show how the initial conflict between mankind and machines came about, and how and why the Matrix was first developed. Its history and purpose are further explained in The Matrix Reloaded. In The Matrix Revolutions a new status quo is established in the Matrix's place in mankind and machines' conflict. During production of the original trilogy, the Wachowskis told their close collaborators that, "at that time they had no intention of making another Matrix film after The Matrix Revolutions ". Following the release of The Matrix Revolutions , the Wachowskis voiced their disinterest in making another Matrix film. Additionally, both Reeves and Moss confirmed that they would reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity, respectively. In response to the news, Lilly Wachowski stated that she was unable to return for the fourth film due to her role in producing the TV series Work in Progress , although she expressed approval of the film's creation without her involvement. Consideration was given to producing a Matrix television series, but was dismissed as the studio opted to pursue negotiations with in writing a treatment for a new film, with Michael B. Jordan eyed for the lead role. According to the article, the Wachowskis were not involved at that point. Potential plotlines being considered by Warner Bros. Many references to 's Simulacra and appear in the first film. Baudrillard himself considered this a misrepresentation, [63] although Lana Wachowski claims the point the reference was making was misunderstood. The Matrix - Wikipedia

The scene was shot by colliding a quarter-scale helicopter mock-up into a glass wall wired to concentric rings of explosives; the explosives were then triggered in sequence from the center outward, to create a wave of exploding glass. The photogrammetric and image-based computer- generated background approaches in The Matrix ' s bullet time evolved into innovations unveiled in the sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. The method of using real photographs of buildings as texture for 3D models eventually led the visual effect team to digitize all data, such as scenes, characters' motions and expressions. It also led to the development of "Universal Capture", a process which samples and stores facial details and expressions at high resolution. With these highly detailed collected data, the team were able to create virtual in which characters, locations, and events can all be created digitally and viewed through virtual cameras, eliminating the restrictions of real cameras. Dane A. Davis was responsible for creating the sound effects for the film. The fight scene sound effects, such as the whipping sounds of punches, were created using thin metal rods and recording them, then editing the sounds. The sound of the pod containing a human body closing required almost fifty sounds put together. The film's score was composed by . Davis focused on this theme of reflections when creating his score, alternating between sections of the orchestra and attempting to incorporate contrapuntal ideas. Davis' score combines orchestral, choral and synthesizer elements; the balance between these elements varies depending on whether humans or machines are the dominant subject of a given scene. Worldwide, it was the fourth highest-grossing film of the year. The Matrix was praised by many critics, as well as filmmakers, and authors of , [9] especially for its "spectacular action" scenes and its "groundbreaking special effects". Some have described The Matrix as one of the best science fiction films of all time; [10] [11] called The Matrix "the most influential action movie of the generation". The site's critical consensus reads, "Thanks to the Wachowskis' imaginative vision, The Matrix is a smartly crafted combination of spectacular action and groundbreaking special effects". Jonathan Rosenbaum of the Chicago Reader reviewed the film negatively, criticizing it as "simpleminded fun for roughly the first hour, until the movie becomes overwhelmed by its many sources There's not much humor to keep it all life-size, and by the final stretch it's become bloated, mechanical, and tiresome. Ian Nathan of Empire described Carrie-Anne Moss as "a major find", praised the "surreal visual highs" enabled by the bullet time or "flo-mo" effect, and described the film as "technically mind-blowing, style merged perfectly with content and just so damn cool". Nathan remarked that although the film's "looney plot" would not stand up to scrutiny, that was not a big flaw because " The Matrix is about pure experience". This dazzling pop is steeped in a dark, pulpy sensibility that transcends nostalgic pastiche and stands firmly on its own merits. Salon ' s reviewer Andrew O'Hehir acknowledged that although The Matrix is a fundamentally immature and unoriginal film "It lacks anything like adult emotion In a limited and profoundly geeky sense, this might be an important and generous film. The Wachowskis have little feeling for character or human interaction, but their passion for movies —for making them, watching them, inhabiting their world—is pure and deep. Filmmakers and science fiction creators alike generally took a complimentary perspective of The Matrix. William Gibson , a key figure in fiction, called the film "an innocent delight I hadn't felt in a long time," and stated, "Neo is my favourite-ever science fiction hero, absolutely. Night Shyamalan expressed admiration for the Wachowskis, stating, "Whatever you think of The Matrix , every shot is there because of the passion they have! You can see they argued it out! The Matrix seemed fresh and cool and visually breathtaking; making wonderful, intelligent use of CGI to augment the on-screen action, striking a perfect balance of the real and the hyperreal. It was possibly the coolest film I had ever seen. The influx of martial-arts choreographers and fight coordinators now make more, and are more prevalent and powerful in the industry, than coordinators. The Matrix revolutionized that. Today, action movies want their big sequences designed around the fights. The Matrix received Academy Awards for film editing , sound effects editing , visual effects , and sound. The film's mainstream success led to the making of two sequels, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions , both directed by the Wachowskis. These were filmed back-to-back in one shoot and released on separate dates in Also released was The Animatrix , a collection of nine animated short films, many of which were created in the same Japanese animation style [] that was a strong influence on the live action trilogy. The Animatrix was overseen and approved by the Wachowskis, who only wrote four of the segments themselves but did not direct any of them; much of the project was developed by notable figures from the world of anime. The franchise also contains three video games: Enter the Matrix , which contains footage shot specifically for the game and chronicles events taking place before and during The Matrix Reloaded ; [] The Matrix Online , an MMORPG which continued the story beyond The Matrix Revolutions ; [] [] and The Matrix: Path of Neo , which focuses on Neo's journey through the trilogy of films. The franchise also includes The Matrix Comics , a series of comics and short stories set in the world of The Matrix , written and illustrated by figures from the comics industry. Most of the comics were originally presented for free on the official Matrix website; [] they were later republished, along with some new material, in two printed trade paperback volumes, called The Matrix Comics, Vol 1 and Vol 2. In March , Warner Bros. Jordan attached to star. According to The Hollywood Reporter neither the Wachowskis nor were involved with the endeavor, although the studio would like to get at minimum the blessing of the Wachowskis. Pictures Group chairman officially announced that a fourth Matrix movie was in the works, with Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss set to reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity respectively. The Matrix was released on Laserdisc in its original aspect ratio of 2. It was also released on VHS in both fullscreen and formats followed on December 7 , The Matrix draws from and alludes to numerous cinematic and literary works, and concepts from mythology, religion and philosophy, including the ideas of Buddhism , Christianity , Gnosticism , Hinduism , and Judaism. The pods in which the machines keep humans have been compared to images in Metropolis , and the work of M. In this episode the hero is unaware he is living in virtual reality until he is told so by "the code man" who created the simulation and enters it knowingly. The Wachowskis have described 's A Space as a formative cinematic influence, and as a major inspiration on the visual style they aimed for when making The Matrix. As in the film, the Matrix of that series introduced in the serial The Deadly Assassin is a massive computer system which one enters using a device connecting to the head, allowing users to see representations of the real world and change its laws of physics; but if killed there, they will die in reality. The fight scenes in led to the hiring of Yuen as fight choreographer. The Wachowskis' approach to action scenes drew upon their admiration for Japanese animation such as and Akira. G , which produced Ghost in the Shell , noted that the anime's high-quality visuals were a strong source of inspiration for the Wachowskis. He also commented, " I'd imagine that The Matrix is the kind of film that was very difficult to draw up a written proposal for to take to film studios". He stated that since Ghost in the Shell had gained recognition in America, the Wachowskis used it as a "promotional tool". In The Matrix , a copy of Jean Baudrillard 's philosophical work Simulacra and Simulation , which was published in French in , is visible on-screen as "the book used to conceal disks", [5] [33] and Morpheus quotes the phrase "desert of the real" from it. The Matrix belongs to the cyberpunk of science fiction, and draws from earlier works in the genre such as the novel by William Gibson. Davies had already used the term "Matrix" fifteen years earlier for a similar concept in his novel The White Room "It had been tried in the States some years earlier, but their 'matrix' as they called it hadn't been strong enough to hold the fictional character in place". Dick , particularly Dick's speculative Exegesis. Dick's conference, in which he stated: "We are living in a computer-programmed reality, and the only clue we have to it is when some variable is changed, and some alteration in our reality occurs". It has been suggested by philosopher William Irwin that the idea of the "Matrix" — a generated reality invented by malicious machines — is an allusion to Descartes ' " First Meditation ", and his idea of an . The Meditation hypothesizes that the perceived world might be a comprehensive illusion created to deceive us. The allegory is related to 's theory of Forms , which holds that the true essence of an object is not what we perceive with our senses, but rather its quality, and that most people perceive only the shadow of the object and are thus limited to false perception. The philosophy of has also been claimed as another influence on the film, and in particular how individuals within the Matrix interact with one another and with the system. Kant states in his that people come to know and explore our world through synthetic means language, etc. This means people are their own agents of deceit, and so in order for them to know truth, they must choose to openly pursue truth. This idea can be examined in Agent Smith's monologue about the first version of the Matrix, which was designed as a human , a perfect world without suffering and with total happiness. Agent Smith explains that, "it was a disaster. No one accepted the program. Entire crops [of people] were lost. The world in was far from a utopia, but still humans accepted this over the suffering-less utopia. According to William Irwin this is Kantian, because the machines wished to impose a perfect world on humans in an attempt to keep people content, so that they would remain completely submissive to the machines, both consciously and subconsciously, but humans were not easy to make content.
