Thematic, Moral and Ethical Connections Between the Matrix and Inception. Modern Day science and technology has been crucial in the development of the modern film industry. In the past, directors have been confined by unwieldy, primitive cameras and the most basic of special effects. The contemporary possibilities now available has enabled modern film to become more dynamic and versatile, whilst also being able to better capture the performance of actors, and better display scenes and settings using special effects. As the prevalence of technology in society increases, film makers have used their medium to express thematic, moral and ethical concerns of technology in human life. The films I will be looking at: The Matrix, directed by the Wachowskis, and Inception, directed by Christopher Nolan, both explore strong themes of technology. The theme of technology is expanded upon as the directors of both films explore the use of augmented reality and its effects on the human condition. Through the use of camera angles, costuming and lighting, the Witkowski brothers represent the idea that technology is dangerous. During the sequence where neo is unplugged from the Matrix, the directors have cleverly combines lighting, visual and special effects to craft an ominous and unpleasant setting in which the technology is present. Upon Neo’s confrontation with the spider drone, the use of camera angles to establishes the dominance of technology. The low-angle shot of the drone places the viewer in a subordinate position, making the drone appear powerful. The dingy lighting and poor mis-en-scene in the set further reinforces the idea that technology is dangerous. -

The Matrix as an Introduction to Mathematics Abstract In my classes on the nature of scientific thought, I have often used the movie The Matrix (1999) to illustrate how evidence shapes the reality we perceive (or think we perceive). As a mathematician and self-confessed science fiction fan, I usually field questionselated r to the movie whenever the subject of linear algebra arises, since this field is the study of matrices and their properties. So it is natural to ask, why does the movie title reference a mathematical object? Of course, there are many possible explanations for this, each of which probably contributed a little to the naming decision. -

What Is the Link Between Religion, Myth and Plot in Any 2 Films of the Science Fiction Genre
Danielle Raffaele Robert A Dallen Prize Topic: A study of the influence of the Bible on the two contemporary science fiction films, The Matrix and Avatar, with a focus on the link between religion, myth and plot. The two films The Matrix (1999, the Wachowski brothers) and Avatar (2009, James Cameron)1 belong to the science fiction genre2 of the contemporary film world and each evoke a diverse set of religiosity and myth within their respective plots. The two films are rich with both overt and subvert religious imagery of motifs and symbolism which one can interpret as belonging to many diverse streams of religious thought and practice across the globe.3 For the purpose of this essay I will be focussing specifically on one religious mode of thought being a Judeo-Christian look at the role of the Messiah and its relation to the hero myth. I will develop this by exploring the archetype of the hero with the two different roles of the biblical Messiah (one being conqueror, and the other of 1 In this essay I presume the reader is familiar with the two films as I do not provide an extensive synopsis or summary of them. Lopesy, Senior Member, IEEE Abstract—This paper presents a new class of adaptive filters, namely Geometric-Algebra Adaptive Filters (GAAFs). You can think of the rows of the determinant as being vectors. For the 3×3 matrix above, the vectors are u = (a; b; c), v = (d; e; f), and w = (g; h; i). Then the determinant is a value associated to n vectors in Rn. There's a general definition for n×n determinants. It's a particular signed sum of products of n entries in the matrix where each product is of one entry in each row and column. The two ways you can choose one entry in each row and column of the 2 × 2 matrix give you the two products ad and bc. There are six ways of chosing one entry in each row and column in a 3 × 3 matrix, and generally, there are n! ways in an n × n matrix. Thus, the determinant of a 4 × 4 matrix is the signed sum of 24, which is 4!, terms. In this general definition, half the terms are taken positively and half negatively. In class, we briefly saw how the signs are determined by permutations. -

APPENDIX MATRICES AND TENSORS A.1. INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALE The purpose of this appendix is to present the notation and most of the mathematical tech- niques that are used in the body of the text. The audience is assumed to have been through sev- eral years of college-level mathematics, which included the differential and integral calculus, differential equations, functions of several variables, partial derivatives, and an introduction to linear algebra. Matrices are reviewed briefly, and determinants, vectors, and tensors of order two are described. The application of this linear algebra to material that appears in under- graduate engineering courses on mechanics is illustrated by discussions of concepts like the area and mass moments of inertia, Mohr’s circles, and the vector cross and triple scalar prod- ucts. The notation, as far as possible, will be a matrix notation that is easily entered into exist- ing symbolic computational programs like Maple, Mathematica, Matlab, and Mathcad. The desire to represent the components of three-dimensional fourth-order tensors that appear in anisotropic elasticity as the components of six-dimensional second-order tensors and thus rep- resent these components in matrices of tensor components in six dimensions leads to the non- traditional part of this appendix. Desiderata Again, we review missing items in our development of linear algebra. We are missing a development of determinants of matrices whose entries may be in commutative rings, rather than fields. We would like an intrinsic definition of determinants of endomorphisms, rather than one that depends upon a choice of coordinates, even if we eventually prove that the determinant is independent of the coordinates. We anticipate that Artin's axiomatization of determinants of matrices should be mirrored in much of what we do here. We want a direct and natural proof of the Cayley-Hamilton theorem. Linear algebra over fields is insufficient, since the introduction of the indeterminate x in the definition of the characteristic polynomial takes us outside the class of vector spaces over fields. We want to give a conceptual proof for the uniqueness part of the structure theorem for finitely-generated modules over principal ideal domains. Math Object Identifiers – Towards Research Data in Mathematics Michael Kohlhase Computer Science, FAU Erlangen-N¨urnberg Abstract. We propose to develop a system of “Math Object Identi- fiers” (MOIs: digital object identifiers for mathematical concepts, ob- jects, and models) and a process of registering them. These envisioned MOIs constitute a very lightweight form of semantic annotation that can support many knowledge-based workflows in mathematics, e.g. clas- sification of articles via the objects mentioned or object-based search. In essence MOIs are an enabling technology for Linked Open Data for mathematics and thus makes (parts of) the mathematical literature into mathematical research data. 1 Introduction The last years have seen a surge in interest in scaling computer support in scientific research by preserving, making accessible, and managing research data. For most subjects, research data consist in measurement or simulation data about the objects of study, ranging from subatomic particles via weather systems to galaxy clusters. Mathematics has largely been left untouched by this trend, since the objects of study – mathematical concepts, objects, and models – are by and large ab- stract and their properties and relations apply whole classes of objects. There are some exceptions to this, concrete integer sequences, finite groups, or ℓ-functions and modular form are collected and catalogued in mathematical data bases like the OEIS (Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences) [Inc; Slo12], the GAP Group libraries [GAP, Chap. 50], or the LMFDB (ℓ-Functions and Modular Forms Data Base) [LMFDB; Cre16]. Abstract mathematical structures like groups, manifolds, or probability dis- tributions can formalized – usually by definitions – in logical systems, and their relations expressed in form of theorems which can be proved in the logical sys- tems as well.
