Grantee Project From Amount Dr S. Hocknull & Dr Climate Change and Megafauna in the Tropics 2. Private Non-Profit: $45,000 J. Louys Detail: QM Geosciences team will excavate, date and Ian Potter Foundation analyse the unique fossil assemblage preserved in Colosseum Chamber, Mt Etna, Rockhampton region. This fossil site contains hundreds of thousands of fossils of small fauna, including small mammals, reptiles, frogs, birds, and snails spanning the last 50,000 years. This project will provide the crucial deep- time knowledge of the biodiversity of semi-evergreen vine thicket, dry rainforest and cavernous ecosystems, which are experiencing unprecedented environmental degradation. Knowledge of such prehistoric records provides unique insights into how climate has impacted upon and shaped our terrestrial ecosystems, and allows us to better predict the effects of future climate change.
