Lucius Cornelius Sulla, commonly known as Sulla, was a general and consul of the Roman Republic. He became the commander of the army against Mithridates, the king of Pontus, after winning the civil war over Marius concerning who should obtain this position. At that time he invaded the city of with his supporters and gain control of the city. After a Roman province was attacked and around 80000 Romans and were massacred by Mithridates and his army, the Romans can no longer stand for it and Sulla is commanded to fight against MIthridates. During his campaign in the east, Marius regain control in the city and reign it with terror. Many were killed without trials and bodies were hanged in the streets. A few years passed and Sulla is free from the Eastern war. He marched back to Rome with his army and occupied it once more. This time he named himself a timeless of the city and executed thousands of his opponents. Despite Sulla’s cruelty, he did brought reforms to Rome. With his absolute power of a dictator he was able to force through any law he wanted. He first established a law that prevent from holding any other office; they also had to wait ten years to be reelected. These laws were to control the growing ambitious tribunes. Sulla also concerned the army commanders by a law that forbade them to leave or fight outside their provinces unless they were instructed by the Senate.1 Different many other politicians Sulla resigned the dictatorship peacefully in 79B.C..
