Chris: What advice would you give writers who are looking to get their scripts noticed?

Greg: Be prepared to write, write, and then write some more. The big- gest part of getting noticed is to have a pony in the race. When a studio or production company is looking for horror and all you have are family dramas, that’s a problem, so don’t write all “rom-coms” or all “sci-fi” or “all action.” Be prepared to know what the market is looking for, and then be a chameleon. While much of America was learning how to make sourdough bread starter and binge watching Tiger King during Covid lockdown, filmmaker and writer Christy Lavalais didn’t let a pandemic stop her productivity. The second season of 5th Ward, which Christy is a staff writer on, dropped on UMC earlier this year. Currently, she is working on the follow up to her YA fantasy novel The Fairy Princess: Enter into Fionntan and her feature directorial debut, Retribution. She is also the writer of the Christmas feel-good comedy, One Crazy Christmas, which is streaming on Showtime Anytime and coming to BET. Christy shares her experience of both before and after quarantine writing.

Christy: I liked writing for the main character, Sabrina. She had some flaws, but overall was a very warm and loving person. You really rooted for her.

Chris: One Crazy Christmas wasn’t originally a Christmas script. Did you work on the rewrites for the script with Greg?

Christy: Yes, I wrote the first draft of One Crazy Christmas nine years ago! The script originally took place in the summer around Sabrina’s birthday. I did not work on the rewrites with Terri J.
